Amy Winehouse Comeback Gig A Washout

Posted: 09 May 2009 01:45 PM PDT

Amy Winehouse has been a mess for a number of years now. As soon as she found fame and fortune it seemed to go straight to her head and set her off on a whirlwind descent into drink, drugs, and destruction.

She has spent the last six months or so relaxing in St. Lucia, having decided to take a break from performing live. She was meant to have written and recorded material for her new album in that time but that doesn’t seem to have happened.

Winehouse made her live comeback last night at the St. Lucia Jazz Festival, an annual event now in its 18th year. Unfortunately, it all ended a little prematurely and her appearance wasn’t quite the return to form we’d all hoped for.

Winehouse did manage an hour-long set which included 14 songs. However, she forgot her words on a number of different occasions, constantly looked about to fall over, mumbled to herself throughout, and altogether failed to deliver the goods.

Reports suggest that Winehouse changed her mind over what songs to sing, complained of being bored, exposed her underwear to the crowd, and acted as if she didn’t want to be there. She also failed to sing any new songs, instead sticking to tracks from Frank and Back to Black.

The festival has been blighted by bad weather and that continued for Winehouse’s set. Heavy rain saw the lighting fail for a time and Winehouse eventually left the stage midway through Valerie. The show was stopped prematurely and technical difficulties were blamed.

Amy Winehouse was always going to be rusty after such a long period away but this performance seemed to go beyond merely being a warm-up. A festival crowd may stand for such a show but I’m not sure the thousands of people who have bought tickets for her upcoming UK tour will do so quite as readily.

Dear Slim,

The Greatest Of All Time has fallen off. I'm let down yet not surprised. I expected him to redeem himself after Encore but somehow he made something even more unlistenable. The best songs are Old Times Sake, Beautiful, & Crack A Bottle. Everything else is about popping pills, his mom, or being violated sexually by his uncle or something. Obviously Eminem doesn't play "no homo" or he woulda never made that Insane joint. WTF indeed. And obviously he hasn't been paying attention to the landscape of current rap music because how else can you explain the fact that Rick Ross put out a better album than Eminem?

50 Cent may have pulled off the ultimate chess move by letting Eminem go first. Curtis is known for coasters but I'd be surprised if his album is anywhere close to being as bad as Relapse.

I fear for Detox.
