Brit Music Scene Review Of The Year 2008 - Part Two: April To June

Posted: 29 Dec 2008 03:52 PM PST

2009 is approaching fast and so it's time to look back at 2008. Here we'll see the high and lowlights of Spring, with a selection of stories we covered between April and June.

April

The month started, as it always does, with April Fool’s Day, and while Brit Music Scene didn’t hoodwink its readers, YouTube did. I detailed the prank in a post entitled The Day Rick Astley Ruled The World.

I shared my Soundtrack For A Day in the middle of the month, and was joined by other b5 Music bloggers. Meanwhile, Boyzone announced their reunion shows, an event I was ecstatic about… yeah right.

The end of the month saw Amy Winehouse accused of assaulting people on a night out in London, and this was just the first time she got up to mischief while drunk during 2008. Phil Collins also announced his retirement even though most people assumed he had already retired years ago.

May

The month began with The Police splitting up for the second time in their career, playing their last ever concert in New York after thrilling millions of people around the world. Meanwhile, Paul McCartney gave away his new album in a newspaper, probably because he knew no-one would buy it.

Two Spice Girls decalred they were giving up on their music careers to cheers from people up and down the land. Geri Halliwell was first, declaring to Gordon ramsay that she is an entertainer rather than singer. Victoria Beckham quickly followed suit although it wasn’t like she had any kind of career in the first place.

The end of the month saw the Ivor Novello awards 2008 results announced, with Amy Winehouse, Take That, and Phil Collins all winning. While Carl Barat gave the first inkling that The Libertines may not be dead after all, wishing for a reunion with Pete Doherty.

June

June saw the Led Zeppelin reunion gaining momentum. First, Jason Bonham declared he’d be in, and then Jimmy Page hinted at a world tour in the offing, blaming Robert Plant for the delays.

Amy Winehouse was in the news again, and again, and again, and not for the right reasons. She was rushed to hospital after collapsing, and her dad Mitch soon gave his verdict on what was wrong with her: emphysema. Winehouse’ spokesperson then denied the claim.

Winehouse also performed at Glastonbury but marred her set by punching an over-enthusiastic fan. The real star of the show was Jay-Z, who put all the controversy over his booking behind him to deliver a supreme set.

The Brit Music Scene Review Of The Year will continue until New Year.
