Cara Dillon - Sweet Liberty (2004)

Posted: 31 Dec 2008 04:18 AM CST

Review by Johnny Loftus @ all music.com
In the accompanying photography to her second album, Cara Dillon looks anywhere but directly at the camera. She dwells on the daisies spreading before her, or gazes out of frame toward an unseen vanishing point. The art direction suggests Dillon might be a bit uncomfortable with the hubbub her debut brought, and her sudden role as the beguiling young savior of contemporary Irish folk music. Sweet Liberty retains the structure of that album, mixing traditional with original material. But as effortlessly beautiful as Dillon's voice is throughout, the album's emotional center is brittle. "Right well do I remember now/Those happy childhood days," she sings over swells of harmonium and keyboard. "No other joys I know/For my heart remains on the verdant plains/Near the winding river Roe" — the traditional's words have a new gravity in the context of Dillon's career. The same holds true for the longing soldier's lament "Bonny Bonny," reborn here in a lush arrangement of Uillean pipes and martial drums. Appropriately, Dillon and partner Sam Lakeman recorded Sweet Liberty at home. Those comfortable environs appear in the shadows of "Erin the Green," dedicated to "Mammy and Daddy" and warmed by piano and melodica; the original "High Tide" — while it somehow recalls Seal's "Kiss From a Rose" — is also glanced with the bright song of a flute, even if it ultimately seems forlorn. "Everywhere" avoids that emotion, since it's a pretty little aside seemingly destined for single status. And yet, Sweet Liberty has also received notice for Dillon's affecting version of "There Were Roses," Tommy Sands' powerful tale of the Troubles, religion, and bitter resignation. This is the emotional seesaw of Sweet Liberty. Its arrangements are so graceful, and Dillon's voice is like woven silk. But there is an overriding sense of sighing defense, that she's performing the music this way to reclaim it, to return it to a personal level, and the places — kitchen tables, quiet hillsides, empty pubs, and reflective memory — where the music has always been most powerful.

Metallica Concerts[1982-2006] [Mp3 Download]

Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine & Greg Prato @allmusic.com
Metallica was easily the best, most influential heavy metal band of the '80s, responsible for bringing the music back to Earth. Instead of playing the usual rock star games of metal stars of the early '80s, the band looked and talked like they were from the street. Metallica expanded the limits of thrash, using speed and volume not for their own sake, but to enhance their intricately structured compositions. The release of 1983's Kill 'Em All marked the beginning of the legitimization of heavy metal's underground, bringing new complexity and depth to thrash metal. With each album, the band's playing and writing improved; James Hetfield developed a signature rhythm playing that matched his growl, while lead guitarist Kirk Hammett became one of the most copied guitarists in metal. Lars Ulrich's thunderous, yet complex, drumming clicked in perfectly with Cliff Burton's innovative bass playing. After releasing their masterpiece Master of Puppets in 1986, tragedy struck the band when their tour bus crashed while traveling in Sweden, killing Burton. When the band decided to continue, Jason Newsted was chosen to replace Burton; two years later, the band released the conceptually ambitious ...And Justice for All, which hit the Top Ten without any radio play and very little support from MTV. But Metallica completely crossed over into the mainstream with 1991's Metallica, which found the band trading in their long compositions for more concise song structures; it resulted in a number one album that sold over seven million copies in the U.S. alone. The band launched a long, long tour which kept them on the road for nearly two years. By the '90s, Metallica had changed the rules for all heavy metal bands; they were the leaders of the genre, respected not only by headbangers, but by mainstream record buyers and critics. No other heavy metal band has ever been able to pull off such a trick. However, the group lost some members of their core audience with their long-awaited follow-up to Metallica, 1996's Load. For Load, the band decided to move toward alternative rock in terms of image -- they cut their hair and had their picture taken by Anton Corbijn. Although the album was a hit upon its summer release -- entering the charts at number one and selling three million copies within two months -- certain members of their audience complained about the shift in image, as well as the group's decision to headline the sixth Lollapalooza. Re-Load, which combined new material with songs left off of the Load record, appeared in 1997; despite poor reviews, it sold at a typically brisk pace through the next year. Garage Inc., a double-disc collection of B-sides, rarities, and newly recorded covers, followed in 1998. In 1999, Metallica continued their flood of product with S&M, documenting a live concert with the San Francisco Symphony; it debuted at number two, reconfirming their immense popularity.
The band spent most of 2000 embroiled in controversy by spearheading a legal assault on Napster, a file-sharing service that allowed users to download music files from each other's computers. Aggressively targeting copyright infringement of their own material, the band notoriously had over 300,000 users kicked off the service, creating a widespread debate over the availability of digital music that raged for most of the year. In January 2001, bassist Jason Newsted announced his amicable departure from the band. Shortly after the band appeared at the ESPN awards in April of the same year, Hetfield, Hammett, and Ulrich entered the recording studio to begin work on their next album, with producer Bob Rock lined up to handle bass duties for the sessions (with rumors of former Ozzy Osbourne/Alice in Chains bassist Mike Inez being considered for the vacated position). In July, Metallica surprisingly dropped their lawsuit against Napster, perhaps sensing that their controversial stance did more bad than good to their "band of the people" image. In late summer 2001, the band's recording sessions (and all other band-related matters) were put on hold as Hetfield entered an undisclosed rehab facility for alcoholism and other addictions. He completed treatment and rejoined the band and they headed back into the studio in 2002 to record St. Anger, released in mid-2003. The recording of St. Anger was capped with the search for a permanent replacement for Newstead. After a long audition process, former Ozzy Osbourne/Suicidal Tendencies bass player Robert Trujillo was selected and joined Metallica for their 2003/2004 world tour. The growing pains the band experienced during the recording process of St. Anger were captured in the celebrated documentary Some Kind of Monster which saw theatrical release in 2004.

[2001] All Killer No Filler - Sum 41 [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 31 Dec 2008 04:44 AM CST

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com
If you've heard Blink 182, the Offspring, or Green Day, you've heard Sum 41, with or without All Killer No Filler. The Canadian quartet's California punk formula is a well-worn one that seems to be working--all the way from the store to the Warped Tour. Set poppy, three-chord rock to hyperactive speeds, write songs about why you don't give a shit, and play up your juvenile-delinquent side for all it's worth (check out the "Going, Going, Gonorrhea" video with the band "doing all the dangerous and immature stuff you shouldn't try from the safety of your own home"). Of course, this has all been done before and will continue to be rehashed again as long as a silly, snotty attitude brings in the record company gold. While these punks are hardly walking down the block less traveled, they still packed All Killer full of hooks that should snag modern rock radio listeners. Peppy sing-along choruses, rolling drum solos, and guitar-driven anthems uncork the energy and brightly color this fast-moving, TRL-friendly disc. --Jennifer Maerz

The White Stripes Collection [4 albums] [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 31 Dec 2008 04:49 AM CST

Biography by Chris Handyside @ allmusic.com
Detroit minimalist rock duo (specifically, southwest Detroit minimalist rock duo) the White Stripes -- Jack White, guitar and vocals, Meg White, drums -- formed in 1997 (Bastille Day, to be precise) with the idea of making simple rock & roll music. From the red-and-white peppermint candy motif of their debut singles, self-titled album, and stage show to their on-the-surface rudimentary style, they succeeded wildly and immediately with that mission. Their first recordings were a mix of garage rock, blues, and the occasional show tune. In frontman Jack (a former drummer for Detroit country outfit Goober & the Peas), the White Stripes have a formidable songwriter, guitar player, and vocalist capable of both morphing between styles and changing the musical styles themselves; ranging from the folk blues of Blind Willie McTell to soaring Kinks-esque pop and narrative pop tunes worthy of Cole Porter and into deepest Captain Beefheart territory within the span of 15 minutes is not an uncommon listening experience with either the White Stripes live show or on record. In drummer Meg, the White Stripes have a minimalist percussionist who seems to sense intuitively exactly when to not play. The White Stripes are grounded in punk and blues, but the undercurrent to all of their work has been the aforementioned striving for simplicity, a love of American folk music, and a careful approach to intriguing, emotional, and evocative lyrics not found anywhere else in the modern punk, or garage rock (or among postmodern "blues" practitioners such as Jon Spencer, for that matter).
While they may have sprung from the Detroit rock scene, the White Stripes quickly gained a national following after two successive tours with indie rockers Pavement and Sleater-Kinney in 1999 and 2000. The White Stripes released their second LP, De Stijl, in 2000 and it further spread the group's reputation. They followed its release with successful tours of Japan and Australia and entered the Memphis studio of renowned producer Doug Easley for 2001's White Blood Cells. The album was a critical smash and the White Stripes soon found themselves, along with the Strokes and the Hives, at the forefront of the new wave of rock & roll bands poised to take over the world. The band certainly did their best to achieve world domination, appearing on Late Night with David Lettterman, being written about in Time, The New Yorker, and Entertainment Weekly, playing the MTV Movie Awards, and having their video for "Fell in Love with a Girl" in heavy rotation on MTV. They also made the tough decision to jump to a major label; White Blood Cells was reissued on V2 in January of 2002 and their first two records followed suit in June. The White Stripes truly became big time rock stars when their "Fell in Love with a Girl" clip was nominated for four MTV Video Awards, including Best Video of the Year (alongside Eminem and *NSYNC!), Breakthrough Video, Best Special Effects in a Video, and Best Editing in a Video. That summer the group also played four triumphant shows with the Strokes, two apiece in the bands' respective hometowns. In spring 2003 their fourth full-length, Elephant -- recorded in two weeks at London's Toerag Studio and dedicated to "the death of the sweetheart" -- arrived to nearly unanimous critical acclaim.
In 2005 the Stripes returned with Get Behind Me Satan, a dizzyingly diverse album that spanned disco-metal and light, marimba-driven pop and was written and recorded in two weeks that spring. While touring that year, the band covered Tegan and Sara's "Walking with a Ghost," which they released as a single at the end of 2005. That year, Jack White and his wife, model/singer Karen Elson, moved to Nashville, TN. White also formed the Raconteurs with Brendan Benson and the Greenhornes' Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler, and spent much of 2006 touring in support of the group's debut album, Broken Boy Soldiers. Early in 2007, the White Stripes announced they were working on a new album; Icky Thump, which included the first-ever Stripes songs with bagpipes and mariachi horns, was recorded in three weeks at Nashville's Blackbird Studio and was released that summer.

Kamelot Collection [ 8 albums] [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 31 Dec 2008 05:15 AM CST

The American band Kamelot was formed in 1991 by guitarist Thom Youngblood and his school mate - the drummer Richard Warner. In 1995 they released their first album called "Eternity" after having signed a contract with the German label Noise Records in Spring 1994. They were welcomed by many as one of the most promising newcomers in the world of metal. Their second album "Kamelot onmouseout="killInfoAlbum()">Dominion", released in 1996, received even more attention since it showed the variety of the band - mixing elements of classic European metal, classical music and progressive rock. They were now one of the leading melodic metal bands from USA. 1997 was a troublesome year for the band since drummer Richard Warner and vocalist Mark Vanderbilt couldn't tour with the band. After intensive searching they managed to find Casey Grillo and Roy Khan (born in Norway, former of Conception which had recently split up). The former members of the band had already written their third and most important record "Siége Perilous" which was now recorded and released in 1998. In late 1998 they also went on tour in Europe for the first time. When they returned to their hometown of Tampa, Florida, they started writing their next album "The Fourth Legacy" which was released this year (2000). This album was produced by Sascha Paeth who has also worked with other great bands like Angra and Rhapsody. This is one of the best bands of melodic metal in the world and sounds a little like Rhapsody but not as majestic and sound track-like.

[2007] Over the Rainbow - Connie Talbot [Album Download]

Posted: 31 Dec 2008 05:46 AM CST

Review by Sharon Mawer @ allmusic.com
Having been released from her contract at Sony/BMG, a feat that she shared with many much older and more established stars, Connie Talbot signed to Rainbow Records, a division of the record label Rhythm Riders set up specifically to handle her and any future child acts, and released the debut album inevitably titled Over the Rainbow. She had sung the title track three times on national prime-time TV on the talent show Britain's Got Talent in the summer of 2007, where she got her big break. Managed by John Arnison, who had previously handled Gabrielle and Billy Ocean, and Marc Marot (formally the head of Island Records), the album was produced and engineered by Simon Hill and Rob May, but the real star is little Connie herself. One is rather obliged to speak of her in such terms, for however good or bad the album is, whether she's actually in tune or not, and whether the choice of songs is right for her young voice is irrelevant. All that matters is that she was then a seven-year-old (six at the time of Britain's Got Talent) cute kid, with a gap where the front teeth should be and angelic good looks. OK. She can sing, for a seven year old, and most of the notes (if not all of them) are in the right order and sung to the right pitch; the timing is fine too, but if this is what music is all about, it would never have taken off. There's no feeling, no emotion, no realization of what each song is about; they're just pretty little songs, even "Imagine," "I Will Always Love You," and "Wonderful World," but what could you expect from a child this age? Isn't is enough that she looks cute and sings in tune? As for the choice of songs, it's pretty much what can be expected. The album opens with "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and, like Little Cosette from Les Miserables who got to sing the simplest of songs ("Castle on a Cloud") among many complex others that the adults sung in the show, Connie Talbot goes through a repertoire of the easiest songs to sing ever written: "I Believe," "Smile," "Walking in the Air," "Ben" -- just read through the track listing. Talbot's potential album buyers won't expect, or want, anything else.

01. Somewhere over the rainbow

06. Walking in the air

[2005] The Story Goes - Craig David [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 31 Dec 2008 05:52 AM CST

Review by Amanda Richards(Georgetown, Guyana) @Amazon.com
Englishman Craig David sticks to familiar hunting ground with "The Story Goes", his third album of R&B smoothies. Easy on the eyes with his arched eyebrows and carefully groomed facial hair, David also sounds as good as ever, particularly on the single "All the Way".

The best song on the album is "Don't Love You No More (I'm Sorry)", other picks being "One Last Dance" which reminds me of his hit song "Rise and Fall"; "Unbelievable"; "Do You Believe in Love" and "Hypnotic"

Even though the album is packed with smooth R&B songs and one upbeat track "Just Chillin'", it would be nice if he would dig down to his Caribbean roots every once in a while (his father is Grenadian, his mother Jamaican) and produce some surprises. Still, one can never get too much of that sexy voice sending shivers up and down your spine.

[1997] Destination Anywhere - Bon Jovi [Mp3 Download]

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com
It's appropriate that Destination Anywhere is an album by Bon Jovi the solo artist as opposed to Bon Jovi the band. For while it contains the requisite number of catchy tunes and the right amount of romantic drama, it varies from the band's output in two important ways. First, much of the material on Destination Anywhere is more low-key than the band's high-octane anthems, offering intimacy, if not exactly introspection, from Jon Bon Jovi himself. Too, there's an experimental edge to the music, with sound samples, programmed drums, and keyboard washes that are as distant from the group's albums as California is from New Jersey. Eurythmic Dave Stewart, ex-Hooters Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian, and perennial hit maker Desmond Child kick in some help on "Queen of New Orleans," "Midnight in Chelsea," and "Ugly." The album-closing "August 7, 4:15," meanwhile, is a dramatic rocker about the murder of Bon Jovi's manager's child. Overall, Destination Anywhere is a solid effort, with Bon Jovi flexing some of the same muscles he's building with his budding acting career. --Daniel Durchholz
