Posted: 30 Dec 2008 12:18 AM CST 2008 has been a fantastic year for music and a fantastic year for us here at Snob's Music. We made many enhancements to the site this year including new logos and gussying up the general look of the site. We also have a new URL and email address. We've added lots of sharing and subscirption capabilities and blog rolls. All of this has led to a huge spike in our hits and readership in the second half of the year. I'd like to take the time to thank our readers as well as the bands, labels, and firms that have helped to provide us with material. Without you we'd have nothing to write about. So on to the recap! Is this 1987? 2008 saw the surprising rebirth of old-school metal. In January who would have thought that by the end of the year we would see albums from such genre heavyweights as AC/DC, Motley Crue, Metallica, and most shocking of all: Guns N' Roses? The odds on that were probably pretty long. I for one welcome these bands back. The metal genre had really suffered in the hands of inferior acts like Slipknot and Linkin Park. Kiss and make up It seems like every year there are more and more reunion tours and records. This year it was British acts jumping on that bandwagon. We saw brand new albums from The Verve and James. As well as a full-blown tour from the reclusive My Bloody Valentine. I'm famous, here's my record Celebrities like to try their hand at music. In the past we've seen albums from Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton, Lindsay Lohan, Don Johnson, Eddie Murphy, Russell Crowe, Jared Leto, Keanu Reeves, all to varying degrees of success. Luckily this year there were a few that I found worthwhile: Zooey Deschanel's stellar turn as She in She & Him, and Ugly Betty actor Val Emmich's Little Daggers album. Count me in the few critics who also liked Scarlett Johansson's Tom Waits' covers album. A New Hope There were countless talented buzz acts that broke this year. The cream of the crop from my perspective are adorable Swedish indie popster Lykke Li and upstate New York orchestral rockers Ra Ra Riot. Like the Engergizer bunny... The trailblazers of today's indie rock scene were going strong in 2008 as well. The Cure, Bob Mould, Paul Westerberg, Nick Cave, and Black Francis all released new material. And in this corner... Many of the most beloved blogosphere bands were out with solid new material as well. The Hold Steady, TV On The Radio, Of Montreal, Bloc Party, Okkervil River, all had strong new records. Finally let's recap some of the (virtual) awards I handed out for 2008: Most disappointing album: Jenny Lewis- Acid Tongue Best Non-Studio album: Lou Reed- Berlin: Live at St. Ann's Warehouse Best EP: Library Voices- Library Voices EP Best cover song: Amie Miriello- "Disarm" Best new artist: Ra Ra Riot Best Toronto concert: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Kool Haus Oct. 1st Best Canadian artist: Tokyo Police Club Best song: Coconut Records- "West Coast" Best album: Ra Ra Riot- The Rhumb Line Well I hope you all had a great 2008 and an even better 2009! |
