Brit Music Scene

The Biggest Singles and Albums Of 2008

Posted: 31 Dec 2008 07:37 PM PST

2008 is now over, it’s official. Here we are in a new year, with the whole of 2009 ahead of us. While I’m still in the process of finishing up my Brit Music Scene review of the year, we do have the top ten bestselling singles and albums of 2008 in the UK for your perusal.

Of course, whether you regard these lists as important or not will depend on whether you see the point of the charts these days. They are still important to see who and what is selling in large numbers but I hate the fact that pop and dance records usually dominate.

Top Ten Singles Of 2008 In The UK

1. Alexandra Burke – ‘Hallelujah’
2. X Factor Finalists – ‘Hero’
3. Duffy – ‘Mercy’
4. Katy Perry – ‘I Kissed A Girl’
5. Nickelback – ‘Rockstar’
6. Estelle Ft Kanye West – ‘American Boy’
7. Kings Of Leon – ‘Sex On Fire’
8. Basshunter ft DJ Mental Theo – ‘Now You’re Gone’
9. Madonna ft Justin Timberlake – ‘4 Minutes’
10. Sam Sparro – ‘Black And Gold’

Unsurprisingly, Alexandra Burke ended the year with the top selling song, but the fact that The X Factor Finalists were second with their horrible version of Hero shows this has more to do with the power of Simon Cowell than anything else.

I can’t believe Nickelback, surely the worst band ever created, came in at number five. This makes me worry a bit about the tastes of your average Brit on the street. You wouldn’t find that crap anywhere near my stereo.

Top Ten Albums Of 2008 In The UK

1. Duffy - ‘Rockferry’
2. Take That – ‘The Circus’
3. Kings Of Leon – ‘Only By The Night’
4. Leona Lewis – ‘Spirit’
5. Coldplay – ‘Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends’
6. Rihanna – ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’
7. The Killers – ‘Day And Age’
8. Girls Aloud – ‘Out Of Control’
9. Pink – ‘Funhouse’
10. Scouting For Girls – ‘Scouting For Girls’

I love seeing some homegrown talent at the top of this list, with Duffy showing she’s as popular as she is talented in securing the bestselling album of 2008. While Take That continued their incredible comeback by hitting number two with The Circus.

Unfortunately, again the tastes of the British population are called into question with Scouting For Girls making it to number ten. If Nickelback are dire, Scouting For Girls are just a joke band almost as laughable as The Hoosiers.
