Sugababes - ‘No Can Do’ Video Review

Girl Power may have started with The Spice Girls but this new video for No Can Do shows that Sugababes are the natural successors to the idea of women being in charge and in control of men everywhere.

With former member Mutya Buena currently ensconced in the Celebrity Big Brother house, oh how the mighty have fallen, I thought it fitting to make this song the first I reviewed here on Brit Music Scene in 2009.

And I’m glad I did because it’s just the kind of song I need to cheer me up in this post-Christmas lull we all experience every year. No Can Do music video and review after the cut.

This song is out and out pop, make no bones about it. While the Sugababes have always had a pop edge to them, their more recent stuff seems to have gone very mainstream, almost excluding the more R ‘n’ B elements completely.

The song is about a girl finally coming to the realization that her guy isn’t going to change. In the past, she’s obviously taken his back or resisted dumping him because he said the right thing or made a last-minute romantic gesture. But no more.

The video deals with the lyrics in a not-very subtle way, showing the girls using men in the most literal sense. What we get is half-naked men doing the Sugababes bidding. Which makes it more a video for women than it is for men. In fact, reverse the roles and there would be cries of sexism, but no matter.

No Can Do is a simple, fun little gem of a pop song that has some substance but delivers it in a kooky enough manner to remain cheery. It shows the Sugababes are now an old-fashioned, down to earth pop group, which is all I ever really wanted them to be anyway.
