Boy George Sent To Prison For 15 Months

Boy George, real name George O’Dowd, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for false imprisonment. The androgynous 80s pop star and now sometime club DJ was found guilty of the charge in December, and has now been sentenced to a spell in jail.

George was the lead singer for Culture Club, a new romantic pop group who had big hits in the 1980s with songs such as Do You Really Want To Hurt Me and Karma Chameleon. The group split up in light of George’s addiction to drugs, but he went on to have solo success in the 90s and beyond.

He’s now best known for his second career as a music DJ, playing clubs as a successful, and very well paid celebrity DJ. He’s also written songs for various artists and runs his own fashion label.

On December 5, 2008, George was convicted in a London court of falsely imprisoning a male escort by the name of Audun Carlsen. The singer was accused of tying the victim to his bed and a wall before beating him with a metal chain. This followed a nude photography session.

George accused Carlsen of accessing private photos on his laptop. Carlsen claimed he was handcuffed and threatened by George. O’Dowd maintained his innocence throughout, claiming he had merely been investigating the laptop incident.

George didn’t give evidence at his trial, and has not spoken about it in public. He claimed “I like to think you can say a lot by saying nothing. I’ll just say this: none of us are defined by our mistakes.”

George will start his sentence immediately, and is likely to be released after seven or eight months if he keeps his nose clean in prison.

George’s life has been anything but dull and this is just the latest incident to bullet point his controversial public life. In 2005 he was found guilty in New York of possessing cocaine but on that occasion received a community service order to pick up litter rather than any jail time.
