Jamie Cullum - Pointless Nostalgic [2003]

Posted: 02 Jan 2009 06:12 AM CST

The first word to use to describe Jamie is "real." His singing and piano playing are so exuberant, enthusiastic, and genuine, I think you'd have to be dead not to be transported into a state of bliss right along with him. The listener can tell immediately how very much this guy loves music: Jamie positively exudes a fetchingly youthful joy in performing that comes across even on a recording (I can only imagine what fun he must be to see in concert).

The second word is "original." What's most startling about Jamie, I think, is how very, very well he incorporates several genres of music to craft a style that is 100% his own. He must have grown up listening to many kinds of music; amazingly, Jamie has a feel for every style he tries. This is unusual: many rock singers, for example, fall flat when they attempt jazz; opera singers sometimes sound ridiculously overblown singing standards; but Jamie has a genuine feel and talent for jazz, rock, and standard ballads: he doesn't sound out of place performing any of these, but natural and comfortable throughout this album. It's a delight to hear.

[2004] Harry Potter [Soundtrack] [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 02 Jan 2009 06:06 AM CST

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com
If the commercial constraints of genre and chronic Hollywood sequelitis threaten to musically straitjacket even a legend like John Williams, the veteran playfully rebuffs such cynicism in his rich, mirthful score for this third chapter of the Harry Potter cycle. Whether inspired by a willful desire not to repeat himself, the continued reinvention of his jazz roots that brightened his scores for Spielberg's Catch Me If You Can and The Terminal, or the story's requirement for a handful of fresh themes, Williams informs his work here with an often dizzying range. The warm mysticism of "Hedwig's Theme" and classical farrago of "Aunt Marge's Waltz" can scarcely prepare one for the swinging, off-kilter "Knight Bus," a romp that suggests a head-on collision between the big-band bombast of1941 and the loopy, Cantina Band kitsch of Star Wars. From there Williams skips back a half-millennium or so for inspiration, conjuring the ancient children's chorus "Double Trouble" (its text adapted from no less than MacBeth), a medieval theme that becomes one of the score's inspirational foundations. Those with a taste for the composer's patent orchestral thunder won't be disappointed either, as the Herrmann-influenced percussion/brass bombast of "Buckbeat's Flight" and "The Whomping Willow.." attest with rousing zeal. It's arguably Williams' best Potter score to date, a soundtrack whose inspirations sprawl across six centuries -- and as many disparate musical styles. Enhanced CD features include a photo gallery and exclusive computer wallpaper and screensaver files. -- Jerry McCulley

[2007] Underclass Hero - Sum 41 [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 02 Jan 2009 05:56 AM CST

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com
Rise up, pop-punk fans, and salute Sum 41: With Blink-182 broken up and Good Charlotte going for a rock vibe, the boys from Ontario stand a chance at reinvigorating the entire stalled subgenre. Not just because the competition has thinned, but because Underclass Hero is just that great. Though nobody would accuse lead singer Deryck Whibley of sounding like Green Day's Billy Joe Armstrong, he bites into the politically charged lyrics that course through this 14-track set as hard: "March of the Dogs," "The Jester," and "Confusion and Frustration in Modern Times" are served up with a spasmodic sneer (and, in the case of the latter, a lyric that will resonate with legions of the exasperated: "Confusion's all I see/Frustration surrounds me/Solution's bid farewell/Sedation? What the hell"), and the title track comes bounding out of stereo speakers with both outrage and lit-up energy. On the lighter side, the ballad "With Me" is sweet and simple enough to recall Plain White Ts, and "Ma Poubelle," a French ditty, strikes a weird Beatle-y chord before rapidly dissolving. Does Sum 41 add up to the hottest pop-punk band going, then? For sure. Do the math. --Tammy La Gorce

[2007] MDB-Beautiful Voices 013 (Vangelis Special Edition)

Posted: 02 Jan 2009 05:46 AM CST

Vangelis is a famous Greek composer and keyboardist. He composes and performs mainly instrumental music and film scores. During his career he has flirted
with many genres and has proved to be very hard to categorize. His music has been filed as "synthesizer music", "new age", "progressive rock", "Symphonic rock",
"Space music", "electronic music", etc. None of those terms is spot on and his output is too varied to catch in one word.
He was born as "Evanghelos Odyssey Papathanassiou" on march 29th 1943 in a small town near Volos, Greece. He started playing the piano at the age of 4 and
gave his first public performance of his own compositions at the age of 6.
During his student years he was an important part of a successful Greek pop band called the "Forminx". He moved to Paris in thelate sixties while forming the
band "Aphrodite's Child", together with singer Demis Roussos and drummer Lucas Sideras. They scored many hits all over Europe. In 1970 the group broke up and
Vangelis started a solo career.
In '75 he moved to London where he set up the legendary Nemo studio that he used to record many of his famous albums and soundtracks.
Most legendary are perhaps the Oscar winning score to "Chariots of Fire" and the ever popular score to Ridley Scott's landmark cult film "Blade Runner".
In 1987 he left London and subsequently recorded music in Athens ("Direct", "Voices"), Rome ("The City") and Paris ("1492").
Appart from creating music, Vangelis also exercises other arts including painting, which has been doing almost all of his life.
Only recently has Vangelis come out of the limelight as a painter, showing his work on a small number of exclusive exhibitions.
Vangelis avoids public appearances. He rarely gives interviews and concentrates on making music. He hates gossip and tries to stay out of the limelight.
During his career he lived in Greece ('43 / '68), Paris ('68 / '74), London (Nemo studios '74 / '87), Athens ('87 / '91), Paris (Epsilon laboratory 1991 / 1993).
He also spend some months in the USA (1986) and Rome (1989).
Vangelis' last known studio was the "Epsilon Laboratory" in Paris, which was build mostly from glass on the top of a high building in Paris.
Since 1993 Vangelis has apparently been moving around a lot, being labeled some sort of "nomad" by the media. He occasionally returned to Greece, his native
country, where he allegedly recorded some of his recent albums (Oceanic, El Greco).
Vangelis uses a technique of recording all tracks simultaneously on tape, using a device especially manufactured for him which he calls the "Direct box".
"He explains his customary method of approach. As soon as the musical idea is there, as many keyboards as possible are connected to the control-desk,
which in turn are directly connected to the applicable tracks of the multi-trackmachine. The idea now is to play as many keyboards as possible at the same time.
That way as broad a basis as possible develops which only needs fine-tuning. After that it's a question of adding things or leaving out things.
The music's flavour is very Byzantine, using Greek orthodox harmonies, church-bells, choir-sounds and more. It's got a faint religious touch and is both austere
and rich at the same time - austere because of the generally sparse orchestration, rich because of its deeply felt emotions.
One of Vangelis' main musical strengths, which is the use of rubato (the slight quickening up or slowing down of the tempo of the music to create those subtle
effects), is very much in evidence throughout.

[2006] Right Where You Want Me - Jesse McCartney

Posted: 02 Jan 2009 05:40 AM CST

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com
Of all the many feelings a heartthrob like Jesse McCartney is apt to inspire, pity is not high on the list: Here's a 19-year-old with a bazillion teenage fans and firm traction on a couple of different freeways to mega-stardom, music and acting. Yet play Right Where You Want Me--the follow-up to one of 2004's guiltiest, fizziest pleasures, Beautiful Soul--and it's hard not to mourn McCartney's misspent youth. Replace this new CD's producers with a batch of one-named tastemakers, ramp up the writing for a more sophisticated crowd (i.e., make it raunchier), and bring on a slew of influential guest rappers, after all, and McCartney would be interchangeable with an intergalactic star like Justin Timberlake. His voice is as bendy and burnished, throwing off hints of Michael Jackson here and Adam Levine there, and he's not far behind on the style meter.

Languishing a few levels below Timberlake-caliber celebrity, though, hasn't hurt his prospects of adding to his fan base: Right Where You Want Me's dozen songs display a desire to come across as a grown-up (the title track and "Daddy's Little Girl" dispense with coyness in favor of explorations of what it means to be a full-on loverboy), but they also stay true to the nice-guy pop that put McCartney on the map. "Can't Let You Go," "Tell Her," and "Right Back in the Water" follow the same relationshippy formula that made Beautiful Soul such a pleasure; "Feelin' You" takes it up a notch, but barely. If there's an experiment here, it's with breaching the boundaries of pop in favor of rockier terrain: "Can't Let You Go" is a pretty pulse-raiser, but instead of dripping with hard-driving 'tude it calls to mind Jackson's rock-obsessed bid to be "bad." --Tammy La Gorce

[2007] Long Road Out Of Eden - The Eagles [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 02 Jan 2009 05:35 AM CST

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine @ allmusic.com
Just because it took them 13 years to deliver a studio sequel to their 1994 live album Hell Freezes Over, don't say it took the Eagles a long time to cash in on their reunion. They started cashing in almost immediately, driving up ticket prices into the stratosphere as they played gigs on a semi-regular basis well into the new millennium. So, why did it take them so long to record a new studio album? It could be down to the band's notoriously testy relations -- Don Felder did leave and sue the band in the interim, settling out of court in 2007 -- it could be that they were running out some contractual clause somewhere, it could be that they were waiting for the money to be right, or the music to be right. It doesn't really matter: there was no pressing need for a new album. Fans were satisfied by the oldies, and the band kept raking in the dough, so they could take their time making a new album. And did they ever take their time -- the 13-year gap between Hell Freezes Over and Long Road Out of Eden, their first album since 1979's The Long Run, was nearly as long as that between their 1980 breakup and 1994 reunion. Far from indulging in a saturation campaign for this long-awaited record, the Eagles released the double-disc Long Road Out of Eden with surgical precision, indulging in few interviews and bypassing conventional retail outlets in favor of an exclusive release with Wal-Mart, which is not only the biggest retailer in America but also where a good chunk of the band's contemporary audience -- equal parts aging classic rockers and country listeners -- shops. (The album was also available on the group's official website, eaglesband.com, via musictoday.com.)
It was a savvy move to release Long Road Out of Eden as a Wal-Mart exclusive, but the album is savvier still, crafted to evoke the spirit and feel of the Eagles' biggest hits. Nearly every one of their classic rock radio staples has a doppelgänger here, as the J.D. Souther-written "How Long" recalls "Take It Easy," the stiff funk of "Frail Grasp on the Big Picture" echoes back to the clenched riffs of "Life in the Fast Lane," and while perhaps these aren't exact replicas, there's no denying it's possible to hear echoes of everything from "Lyin' Eyes" and "Desperado" to "Life in the Fast Lane," and Timothy B. Schmit turns Paul Carrack's "I Don't Want to Hear Anymore" into a soft rock gem to stand alongside his own "I Can't Tell You Why." It's all calculated, all designed to hearken back to their past and keep the customer satisfied, but yet it often manages to avoid sounding crass, as the songs are usually strong and the sound is right, capturing the group's peaceful, easy harmonies and Joe Walsh's guitar growl in equal measure. The Eagles burrow so deeply into their classic sound that they sound utterly disconnected from modern times, no matter how hard Don Henley strives to say something, anything about the wretched state of the world on "Long Road Out of Eden," "Frail Grasp on the Big Picture," and "Business as Usual." These tunes are riddled with 21st century imagery, but sonically they play as companions to Henley's brooding end-of-the-'80s hit The End of the Innocence, both in their heavy-handed sobriety and deliberate pace and their big-budget production. That trio fits neatly into the second disc of Long Road Out of Eden, which generally feels stuck in the late '80s, as Walsh spends seven minutes grooving on "Last Good Time in Town" as if he were a Southwestern Jimmy Buffett with a worldbeat penchant, Glenn Frey sings Jack Tempchin and John Brannen's "Somebody" as if it were a sedated, cheerful "Smuggler's Blues," and the whole thing feels polished with outdated synthesizers.
None of this is necessarily bad, however, as it's all executed well and the doggedly out-of-fashion sonics only make the songs more reminiscent of the Eagles' older records, especially if their solo work from the '80s is part of the equation. If that second disc does seem a bit like the Eagles' lost album from the Reagan years, the first disc recalls their mellow country-rock records of the '70s -- that is, if Joe Walsh had been around to sing Frankie Miller's blues-rocker "Guilty of the Crime" to balance out Henley and Frey's "Busy Being Fabulous" and "What Do I Do with My Heart," a counterpoint that serves the band well. That first disc is the stronger of the two, but the two discs do fit together well, as they wind up touching upon all of the band's different eras, from the early days to their solo hits. It's designed to please those fans who have been happy to hear the same songs over and over again, whether it's on the radio or in those pricey concerts -- listeners who want new songs that feel old, but not stale. That's precisely what Long Road Out of Eden provides, as it's an album meticulously crafted to fit within the band's legacy without tarnishing it.

[2007] All of the Above - Hillsong United [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 02 Jan 2009 05:25 AM CST

Hillsong United has come a long way, baby. Gone are the days of being a youth ministry band. Long forgotten are the times where the only names that came to mind when you mentioned Hillsong were Darlene Zsczech or Reuben Morgan. I would venture that today more people are waiting for new songs from Hillsong the "younger" than Hillsong the "elder".
Joel Houston, Marty Sampson, et al, have been leading worship for a long time now. Where once everything they recorded was new and fresh, they now, as veterans, no doubt discover what all musicians who record music for people discover. Starting fresh and staying fresh are two different things.
"All of the Above", United's newest, is tasked with following a successful string of albums. It is definitely a worthy next step, with well-written songs and excellent musicianship. It has a good balance of vertical songs (You, Oh Lord, are.... type songs) and horizontal songs (Listen everybody, let me tell you about God... type songs).
My main issue here is that, while good, this album doesn't open any new doors or step outside what has become a nice little box for this band. And they are too good for that to happen. The best of the best re-invent themselves every so often. This is the challenge for United. As good as this album is, it's not too distinguished from most of their other work.
While the band is tight and exuberant on "Break Free", "Solution", "My Future Decided" and even "Point of Difference", they really hit the mark on the songs where they take a more intimate track. They are able to blend softness with power chords, like on "Devotion" to bring a majesty that is their hallmark. And, as on other albums, they can bring it down into a "selah". There are a couple of moments on this hour and 15 minutes of music where spontaneity reigns and repeats.
"Hosanna", written and sung by Brooke Fraser, stands apart on the album and will probably be done in churches world-wide on Sunday mornings. It, too, breaks off into a riff that gives time and space to the worshiper. I like these moments that are off the printed page.
The final track is "Saviour King", and it, too, is one of my favorites. United is very good at creating songs that can jar you and then melt you, all in the same song. This one crescendos and then falls away.
All in all, "All of the Above" succeeds in that it is well-done. I, for one, would love to see them step out on their next album and hear something that's more "None of the Above".

[2006] Konvicted - Akon [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 02 Jan 2009 05:14 AM CST

Review by Amanda Richards(Georgetown, Guyana) @Amazon.com
This second album from Akon is a genre-bending collection of R&B and Hip Hop tracks and lots of ballads. Singing with passion and "konviction", he returns with that unmistakable accent and international musical flavor that propelled his debut album to multi-platinum status.

The first single "Smack That" is an infectiously catchy dance track, and having a re-energized Eminem as a guest artiste won't hurt it's chances at all. The second single "I Wanna Love You" (or the version with the more explicit title) features Snoop Dogg, where Snoop is ready for a little action, and Akon is looking for a relationship, just like his pal T-Pain.

However, if R&B ballads are more your thing, there are some excellent ones on this album, such as "The Rain", "Never Took the Time" (one of the best tracks on the album), the reggae-beat "Mama Africa", "I Can't Wait", and the retro-soul track "Tired of Runnin'"

For mid-tempo fans there's the down to earth "Gangsta Bop", "Blown Away" (featuring Styles P.) and the bonus track "Gringo". If its dance tracks you're after, you'll also like "Shake Down", but this being a more introspective album there's not much room for dancing.

This album contains explicit lyrics, and the unfortunate thing is that the profanity doesn't complement an otherwise very good album. A good buy for someone who likes R & B ballads and doesn't give a #### about profanity.

Nelly Collection [4 Albums] [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 02 Jan 2009 05:09 AM CST

Biography by Jason Birchmeier @ allmusic.com
When Nelly first debuted nationally in summer 2000, he seemed like a novelty, but it quickly became apparent that he was, in fact, an exceptional artist, a rapper with truly universal appeal. He wasn't from the East or West Coast, and wasn't really from the Dirty South, either. Rather, Nelly was from St. Louis, a Midwestern city halfway between Minneapolis and New Orleans. His locale certainly informed his rapping style, which was as much country as urban, and his dialect as well, which was, similarly, as much Southern drawl as Midwestern twang. Plus, Nelly never shied away from a pop-rap approach, embracing a singalong vocal style that made his hooks incredibly catchy. As a result, Nelly became an exceptional rapper capable of crossing all boundaries, from the Dirty South to the TRL crowd and everything in between. His first hit, "Country Grammar (Hot...)," became a summer anthem, and many more hits followed. In particular, his popularity peaked in summer 2002, when he topped seemingly every Billboard chart possible with his Nellyville album and its lead single, "Hot in Herre."

[2004] Shark Tale [Soundtrack] [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 02 Jan 2009 04:42 AM CST

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com
While it lacks some of the innocent charm of Pixar's similarly oceanic-themed Finding Nemo, Dreamworks' computer animated fish opera works from a more adult source, spoofing Coppola's The Godfather with an impressive array of all-star vocal talents. Its soundtrack may be one of the film's most consistently successful elements, a party-ready mix of contemporary r&b and hip-hop lite. Two of the highlights here are rooted in a 1970s disco groove: Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott take a slinky cruise through a beat-drenched take on "Car Wash," while Cheryl Lynn's "Got to Be Real" is given a soul-pumped turn by Mary J. Blige (featuring a new rap break by star Will Smith and healthy samples of Lynn's original). Other standouts include fan 3's infectious "Digits," the pop-reggae inflected "Three Little Birds" by Sean Paul and Ziggy Marley, India Arie's dusky, seductive "Get It Together" and the Ludacris workout "Gold Digger." An excerpt from Hans Zimmer's antic, suitably tongue-in-cheek orchestral underscore closes the collection out. --Jerry McCulley

Chevelle-Vena Sera(2007)

Vena Sera

Amazon.com
Chevelle has been releasing solid, if not entirely original-sounding, albums for the better part of a decade now and Vena Sera serves as another pleasant but workaday entry in the band's still sparse oeuvre. The group's continued debt to Tool remains obvious on the hard-hitting opener "Antisaint" with its throbbing guitar work and from-the-gut vocals and can also be heard during the arena-ready stomp "The Fad." There are few surprises throughout, very little we haven't already heard from Chevelle and its contemporaries before: The pulsating, detuned riffs that populate the mosh-intensive "Humanoid" and the fairly pallid late-album arrival "Midnight to Midnight" (which could have been a serious radio contender circa 1999) share space with the uplifting guitar figures of the slightly pop-inflected "Brainiac" and the nearly anthemic "Well Enough Alone" to familiar but comforting effect. Still, lovers could do far worse than dive inand enjoy some workmanlike riffs delivered in an enthusiastic fashion that many of this band's imitators will never manage to muster. Vena Sera is decent through and through but hardly ever life-changing.––Jedd Beaudoin

This is a great CD.Not the the best of Chevelle but it Rocks.

Eric Clapton Collection [20 albums] [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 02 Jan 2009 04:31 AM CST

Biography by William Ruhlmann @ allmusic.com
By the time Eric Clapton launched his solo career with the release of his self-titled debut album in mid-1970, he was long established as one of the world's major rock stars due to his group affiliations -- the Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, and Blind Faith -- which had demonstrated his claim to being the best rock guitarist of his generation. That it took Clapton so long to go out on his own, however, was evidence of a degree of reticence unusual for one of his stature. And his debut album, though it spawned the Top 40 hit "After Midnight," was typical of his self-effacing approach: it was, in effect, an album by the group he had lately been featured in, Delaney & Bonnie & Friends.
Not surprisingly, before his solo debut had even been released, Clapton had retreated from his solo stance, assembling from the D&B&F ranks the personnel for a group, Derek & the Dominos, with which he played for most of 1970. Clapton was largely inactive in 1971 and 1972, due to heroin addiction, but he performed a comeback concert at the Rainbow Theatre in London on January 13, 1973, resulting in the album Eric Clapton's Rainbow Concert (September 1973). But Clapton did not launch a sustained solo career until July 1974, when he released 461 Ocean Boulevard, which topped the charts and spawned the number one single "I Shot the Sheriff."

[2005] Fireflies - Faith Hill [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 02 Jan 2009 04:26 AM CST

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com

It's hard to imagine a more schizophrenic album than Fireflies, but Faith Hill, the comely pride of Star, Mississippi, had a lot of different factions to please. There's the country set, furious about the L.A. excess of 2002's Cry, as ravaged a pop album as ever made. Then there's the club set, which actually mistook Cry for music, and wanted more. Finally, there's Hill herself, still bruised from the critical drubbing the last album got, and obviously feeling the need to prove herself anew, going brunette to show her transformation. The bad news about Fireflies is that the all-out country songs--the autobiographical "Mississippi Girl," which practically begs forgiveness for Cry, and the cartoonish "Dearly Beloved," a hoedown ditty about a shotgun wedding--are embarrassing attempts to show that the Dixified diva hasn't gotten above her raising. Then, two other offerings--Darrell Scott's preachy protest number "We've Got Nothing But Love to Prove" and the beautiful torch ballad "Paris"--are both lyrical head-scratchers, and find the artist floundering as to who she is and what she's about. Where Hill knowingly flexes her muscle is in tackling three complex, literate songs by alt-folkie Lori McKenna--the title track (about the power of dreams), "Stealing Kisses" (about reevaluating life choices), and "If You Ask" (about living with a substance abuser). Hill gives these performances nuanced readings that say buckets more about her own life than "Mississippi Girl" could ever convey, and point to an emotional reservoir Hill is just beginning to tap. Here's hoping she goes back to that well again and again. --Alanna Nash

Charlotte Church - Prelude:The Best Of (2002)

Posted: 02 Jan 2009 04:16 AM CST

From Amazon.com
Need more evidence of the record industry's obsession with youth? Consider that budding Welsh diva Charlotte Church was a ripe, old 16 when this, her first greatest-hits anthology was released. Spanning her first four releases, as well as some outside collaborations and unreleased material, this 18-track collection underscores the soprano's seemingly boundless potential--as well as some potential career obstacles ahead. Her crystalline, still-maturing voice is best showcased on classically oriented works like Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Pie Jesu," Franck's "Panis Angelicus," and her now-ubiquitous rendering of Delibes' "Flower Duet." She also excels on folk traditionals such as "She Moved Through the Fair" and "My Langan Love." But overwrought productions like the already-dated "Dream a Dream" and "Habanera," a faux-flamenco take on Bizet, nearly get the best of her. Still, her promising duet with fellow young phenom Josh Groban on "The Prayer" and her mature, dreamy reading of A Beautiful Mind's "All Love Can Be," as well as strong performances on the previously unreleased "It's the Heart That Matters Most" and "Bridge over Troubled Waters," are ample evidence of her potential for rewarding pop crossover--if she doesn't retire by 21. --Jerry McCulley

Weird Al Yankovic Discography [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 02 Jan 2009 04:11 AM CST

Biography by Jason Ankeny @allmusic.com
The foremost song parodist of the MTV era, "Weird Al" Yankovic carried the torch of musical humor more proudly and more successfully than any performer since Allan Sherman. In the world of novelty records -- a genre noted for its extensive back catalog of flashes-in-the-pan and one-hit wonders -- Yankovic was king, scoring smash after smash over the course of an enduring career which found him topically mocking everything from new wave to gangsta rap.
Alfred Matthew Yankovic was born October 23, 1959, in Lynwood, CA. An only child, he began playing the accordion at age seven, following in the tradition of polka star Frank Yankovic (no relation); in his early teens he became an avid fan of the Dr. Demento show, drawing inspiration from the parodies of Allan Sherman as well as the musical comedy of Spike Jones, Tom Lehrer, and Stan Freberg. In 1973 Demento spoke at Yankovic's school, where the 13 year old passed the radio host a demo tape of home recordings; three years later, Demento played Yankovic's "Belvedere Cruising" -- an accordion-driven pop song written about the family's Plymouth -- on the air, and his career was launched.
Yankovic quickly emerged as a staple of the Demento play list, recording a prodigious amount of tongue-in-cheek material throughout his high-school career. After graduation, he studied architecture; while attending California Polytechnic State University, he also joined the staff of the campus radio station, first adopting the nickname "Weird Al" and spinning a mixture of novelty and new wave hits. In 1979, the success of the Knack's monster hit "My Sharona" inspired Yankovic to record a parody dubbed "My Bologna"; not only was the song a smash with Demento fans, but it even found favor with the Knack themselves, who convinced their label, Capitol, to issue the satire as a single.
After graduating in 1980, Yankovic cut "Another One Rides the Bus," a parody of Queen's chart-topping "Another One Bites the Dust" recorded live in Dr. Demento's studios; the song became an underground hit, and Yankovic followed it up with "I Love Rocky Road," a satire of Joan Jett & the Blackhearts' "I Love Rock 'n Roll." After hooking up with noted session guitarist and producer Rick Derringer, he signed to Scotti Bros., which issued his debut LP, "Weird Al" Yankovic, in 1983. The album featured the song "Ricky," a tune inspired equally by Toni Basil's hit "Mickey" and the I Love Lucy television series; issued as a single, it hit the Top 100 charts, and its accompanying video became a staple of the fledgling MTV network.
Ultimately, much of Yankovic's success resulted from his skilled use of music video, a medium not available in the era of Spike Jones or Allan Sherman; suddenly, not only could records themselves serve as parody fodder, but their video clips were ripe for satire as well. Additionally, MTV firmly established Yankovic's public persona; sporting garish Hawaiian shirts, frizzy hair, and an arsenal of goofy mannerisms, he cut a distinctly bizarre figure which he consistently exploited to maximum comic effect. After Michael Jackson's "Beat It" became the most acclaimed video in the medium's brief history, Yankovic recorded "Eat It" for his sophomore effort, 1984's "Weird" Al Yankovic in 3-D; the "Eat It" video, which mocked the "Beat It" clip scene-for-scene, became an MTV smash, and the Grammy-winning single reached the Top 15.
In addition to "Eat It," In 3-D also launched the minor hits "King of Suede" (a rewrite of the Police's "King of Pain") and "I Lost on Jeopardy" (a send-up of the Greg Kihn Band's "Jeopardy"), as well as "Polkas on 45," the first in a series of medleys of pop hits recast as polka numbers. Dare to Be Stupid, the first comedy record ever released in the new compact disc format, followed in 1985, and featured "Like a Surgeon," a takeoff of the Madonna hit "Like a Virgin." Like its predecessor, Dare to Be Stupid went gold, but 1986's Polka Party! fared poorly and charted only briefly, prompting many to write off Yankovic's career.
However, in 1988, Yankovic returned with the platinum-selling Even Worse, its title and album cover a reference to Michael Jackson's recent Bad LP. "I'm Fat," the first single and video, also parodied the lavish Martin Scorsese-directed clip for Jackson's hit "Bad"; shot on the same subway set used by Jackson, the video -- which portrayed Yankovic as a grotesquely obese tough guy -- won him his second Grammy. The next year, he starred in the feature film UHF, which he also co-wrote; a soundtrack appeared as well.
After an extended period of silence, he returned in 1992 with Off the Deep End, which featured the Top 40 hit "Smells Like Nirvana," a send-up of Nirvana's landmark single "Smells Like Teen Spirit." After 1993's Alapalooza, he resurfaced in 1996 with Bad Hair Day, his highest-charting record to date thanks to the success of the single "Amish Paradise," a takeoff of the Coolio hit "Gangsta's Paradise." The follow-up, Running with Scissors, appeared in 1999, with Poodle Hat landing in 2003. Straight Outta Lynwood appeared in 2006 with the single "White & Nerdy," a suburban parody of Chamillionaire's hit "Ridin."
