Kenny G Collection [9 albums] [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 04 Jan 2009 06:00 AM CST

Biography by Scott Yanow @allmusic.com
Kenny G has long been the musician many jazz listeners love to hate. A phenomenally successful instrumentalist whose recordings make the pop charts, Kenny G's sound has been a staple on adult contemporary and smooth jazz radio stations since the mid-'80s, making him a household name. Kenny G is a fine player with an attractive sound (influenced a bit by Grover Washington, Jr.) who often caresses melodies, putting a lot of emotion into his solos. Because he does not improvise much (sticking mostly to predictable melody statements), his music largely falls outside of jazz. However, because he is listed at the top of "contemporary jazz" charts and is identified with jazz in the minds of the mass public, he is classified as jazz.
Kenny Gorelick started playing professionally with Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra in 1976. He recorded with Cold, Bold & Together (a Seattle-based funk group) and freelanced locally. After graduating from the University of Washington, Kenny G worked with Jeff Lorber Fusion, making two albums with the group. Soon he was signed to Arista, recording his debut as a leader in 1982. His fourth album, Duotones (which included the very popular "Songbird"), made him into a star. Soon he was in demand for guest appearances on recordings of such famous singers as Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, and Natalie Cole. Kenny G's own records have sold remarkably well, particularly Breathless, which has easily topped eight million copies in the U.S.; his total album sales top 30 million copies. 1994's holiday album Miracles and 1996's Moment continued the momentum of his massive commercial success. He also recorded his own version of the Celine Dion/Titanic smash "My Heart Will Go On" in 1998, but the following year he released Classics in the Key of G, a collection of jazz standards like "'Round Midnight" and "Body & Soul," possibly to reclaim some jazz credibility.
Faith: A Holiday Album was released that same year, followed up by a limited edition re-release of the 1997 Greatest Hits disc. 2002 found Kenny G dipping into tropical territory with Paradise, which featured guest appearances by Brian McKnight and Chanté Moore. This was followed by a music video collection, another holiday album, entitled Wishes, and, in 2003, a second greatest-hits collection, Ultimate Kenny G. Perhaps in a bid to shake up his discography a bit, in 2004 Kenny G released At Last...The Duets Album, which featured "duets" with LeAnn Rimes and Chaka Khan. Two years later, smooth jazz's king of the soprano sax returned to a purely instrumental approach on the brassy, big-band-inspired albums Holiday Collection and I'm in the Mood for Love. 2006 was also the year the artist was dubbed the best golfer in music by Golf Digest, beating out Vince Gill for the number one spot.

[2001] Sarah Brightman Classics [Mp3 Download]

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com
Have some friends who still haven't discovered what the Sarah Brightman fuss is all about? You'll find the perfect introduction to make converts of them all in Classics, so they'll have no more excuses to remain clueless. Sporting a Botticelli-inspired image of the platinum-selling soprano on the cover, Classics is a classy anthology including highlights from three of Brightman's chart-topping releases along with seven new tracks. Songs personally selected by the diva as her favorite classical interpretations are culled from her previous blockbusters: Time To Say Goodbye, Eden, and La Luna. And whether you're a fan already in the fold or one in the making, the new material here shows the diva at the top of her form, in new renderings of "O Mio Babbino Caro" and "Nessun Dorma" (accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic)--fascinating displays of the operatic confidence she's developed over her career. Other new offerings include a touching version of Schubert's "Ave Maria,' "Winter Light," a fresh take on her signature song "Pie Jesu" (from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Requiem). "Alhambra" and "Dans La Nuit"--a real treat, bathing the listener in Brightman's silky, sensuous vocalism--add two original titles to her famous adaptations of classical melodies to new lyrics (using Chopin's haunting E major Etude in the latter case). All told, a lovely affirmation of the directions Brightman has boldly taken in her career to date. -Sarah Chin

Bon Jovi Collection [6 albums] [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 04 Jan 2009 05:55 AM CST

Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine @ allmusic.com
Few bands embodied the era of pop-metal like Bon Jovi. By merging Def Leppard's loud but tuneful metal with Bruce Springsteen's working-class sensibilities, the New Jersey-based quintet developed an ingratiatingly melodic and professional variation of hard rock -- one that appealed as much to teenagers as to housewives. Bon Jovi skillfully employed professional songwriters to give their songs, especially their power ballads, an appropriately commercial sheen, inaugurating a trend that dominated mainstream hard rock and metal for the next decade. They also made simple performance videos that emphasized lead singer Jon Bon Jovi's photogenic good looks, and these clips helped propel 1986's Slippery When Wet and 1988's New Jersey into multi-platinum status around the world. Both records were criticized for being more pop than metal, as well as being targeted toward teenyboppers, yet the group managed to subtly change its image in the early '90s, moving away from metal and concentrating on straightforward arena rock and big ballads. The shift in style worked, and Bon Jovi were the only American pop-metal band of the '80s to retain a sizable audience in the '90s.

Jon Bongiovi spent most of his adolescence ditching school to play rock & roll, usually in local bands with his friend David Rashbaum. Bongiovi's cousin Tony owned the famous New York recording studio the Power Station, which was where Jon hung out. He was hired as a janitor, and soon he was recording demos at the Power Station with several famous musicians, including members of the E Street Band and Aldo Nova. One of these demos, "Runaway," became a hit on local New Jersey radio, and Bongiovi formed Bon Jovi to support the song, recruiting not only Rashbaum, but also guitarist Dave Sabo, bassist Alec John Such, and drummer Tico Torres. Soon, Bon Jovi was the subject of a major-label bidding war, and the group -- or, according to some reports, just Bongiovi -- signed to Polygram/Mercury in 1983. Upon signing, Jon changed his last name to Bon Jovi in order to de-emphasize his ethnic background, and Rashbaum adopted his middle name Bryan as his last name. Before the group entered the studio, Bon Jovi replaced Sabo with Richie Sambora.

[2000] Oops!...I Did It Again - Britney Spears [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 04 Jan 2009 05:29 AM CST

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com
Yes, she did. Even if the title track's chorus is a blatant rip-off of the Barbra Streisand/Barry Gibb duet, "Woman in Love," it's still darn catchy--much more than anything from 1999's ...Baby One More Time (save the album's fab title tune, of course). With the rest of the 12 songs here, the teen queen pretty much delivers a remake of her last album. Songs like "What U See (Is What U Get)" and "Stronger" show Swedish songwriter-producer Max Martin in his element, churning out another and yet another slick smash with staccato synth beats and heavily overproduced melodies. But even at his strongest points, he can't bury Britney's voice far enough below the virtual guitars--and it's obvious this girl ain't no Celine. Except for the horrendous ballads, however, that doesn't make a stitch of a difference. The pop songs have all the qualities of memorable tunes--the choruses are clear and catchy, the beats are bouncy enough to make you shake your bonbon, and the singer is about as randy for love as Austin Powers is for a shag. Edit out the low-water mark--when Britney mutilates the Rolling Stones' misogynist anthem, "Satisfaction," by oversexualizing it with inserted "uh"s ("I can't get no, uh, satisfaction")--and you've got a hit-packed album that's as guilty a pleasure as reruns of Beverly Hills 90210. --Heidi Sherman

[2007]Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus[Soundtrack][Mp3 Download]

Posted: 04 Jan 2009 05:19 AM CST

Review by The Blue Raja (MD, USA) @Amazon.com
Who would have thought that the follow up album to the catchy but not-so-serious Hannah Montana soundtrack could be such a solid release, a solid DUAL release at that. Miley's two personas combine to deliver a power-pop fusion of rockin' tunes that span styles of pop, rock, and even a slight touch of country and reggae. Miley's raspy girl-next-door voice will certainly please Ashlee Simpson fans (if you don't believe me sample the track "As I Am"... she sounds just LIKE Ashlee), and some tracks deliver a good enough punch to draw even an Avril crowd. So what is the difference between these two personas?

Hannah Montana certainly is more teen power-pop, and Miley Cyrus has a slightly more refined, mature sound. Which is better? Both. I'll admit that I was drawn to the Hannah Montana album first, but now the "Meet Miley" album has caught my attention. Fun songs like "East Northumberland High" whose infectious chorus reminds teens that there is life after high school as Miley sings, "You're my type of guy I guess if I was stuck in East Northumberland High for the rest of my life but people change thank God I did." Miley (Destiny Hope) actually wrote most of the songs on the "Meet Miley Cyrus" CD, which is refreshing to know, and quite an accomplishment for this 14 year old. She happened to write a very notable cut, "Let's Dance," which has a Spanish-influenced vibe in its rhythm and guitar arrangements.

If you are looking for the "next Hilary Duff" look no more, yet I think Miley has more personality and spunk. This dual CD release should not be taken lightly nor seen as a Disney-star release. Miley Cyrus is the next... Miley Cyrus. Look out folks, she's here to stay, and this album proves it through and through.

Corinne Bailey Rae - Corinne Bailey Rae [2007]

Posted: 04 Jan 2009 05:09 AM CST

This is a great album. If you purchased the single disc album you might want to reconsider purchasing the double, import CD. It contains two extra songs not included on the double, deluxe album: ("I Won't Let You Lie To Yourself" and "Enchantment (amp fiddler remix)"). The music is very soulful in an eclectic way. It differentiates itself from being classified as "Rhythm and Blues" or "Pop". She defines her unique style in her rendition of tunes originally recorded by Led Zeppelin (Since I've Been Loving You), Aretha Franklin (Daydreaming), and Bjork (Venus As A Boy). You will probably enjoy the entire album if you can vibe to the previously released singles, "Put Your Records On" and "Like a Star". Her vocals are hypnotically soothing to the ear and this album will be remembered as a classic. It will withstand the test of time because it can hold up to repeated play. I am satisfied with this purchase and I will continue to enjoy this album in future listening.

Plain White T's Collection [3 albums] [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 04 Jan 2009 05:04 AM CST

Biography by Jason MacNeil @allmusic.com
Born in the suburbs of Chicago, lead singer Tom Higgenson was originally fascinated with the drums, performing in various pop and rock bands in high school. One of these groups was Harvey's Daughter, where he met bass player Ken Fletcher. The group disbanded but another was re-formed, with Higgenson taking over lead duties as songwriter and singer. Friend and drummer Dave Tirio joined and, in the fall of 1997, the pop-punk group was formed. Plain White T's performed around various Chicago clubs gaining a small but devout following. In the summer of 1999, Higgenson was almost killed in a car accident. The event, which resulted in a ruptured kidney and lacerated lung, gave him a newfound appreciation for life. As a result, the songwriting process grew and the band was being noticed.

The group self-released Come on Over in 2001, then jumped to Fearless for the 2002 LP Stop. Plain White T's struggled with lineup shifts even as they toured heavily in support of the album, but were able to muster up the record All That We Needed, released through Fearless in early 2005. By that point the band's roster had solidified with vocalist Higgenson, Tirio and Tim Lopez on guitar, drummer De'Mar Hamilton, and bassist Mike Retondo. The band next spent time on the 2005 Take Action tour alongside Sugarcult, Head Automatica, and more. They finished out the year touring with Spitalfield, joining up with Motion City Soundtrack in 2006. The enhanced EP Hey There Delilah was released that May; it contained various versions of the popular acoustic ballad "Hey There Delilah" (from All That We Needed), along with four new songs and music videos. Most of the following summer was then spent on Warped Tour before Every Second Counts, their hook-laden major-label debut for Hollywood, appeared in early September. The guys then hit the road on the popular Nintendo Fusion Tour alongside Hawthorne Heights, the Sleeping, and more.

Ace of base - The Sign (1993)

Posted: 04 Jan 2009 04:59 AM CST

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine @ allmusic.com
Ace of Base's strong point is not versatility — all of their hit singles have exactly the same beat. But that doesn't matter. On their debut album, The Sign, they managed to create a piece of melodic Euro-disco that was a huge hit all over the world, appealing to both dance clubs and pop radio. And with singles like "All That She Wants," "The Sign," and "Don't Turn Around," it's easy to see why they were hits — the beat is relentless and the hooks are incessantly catchy.

[2002] Cry - Faith Hill [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 04 Jan 2009 04:43 AM CST

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com
Faith Hill finally owns up to what we knew all along. She may be from deep-dish Mississippi, but she isn't a country singer, and never has been. This babe's a diva now. And, as she says in her best Diana Ross voice on "Free," "There ain't nothin' I can do about it." But what she could exercise some control over, as the coproducer of her fifth studio album, is the quality and style of her particular brand of über-pop, which on Cry considerably ratchets up the noise factor from 1999's Breathe. The songs, many written by tunesmiths long working in Nashville, often come stocked with meaningful messages, i.e. the emptiness of addiction ("If You're Gonna Fly") or the momentary connection with a loved one who has passed on ("You're Still Here"). Yet Hill and company (longtime producers Byron Gallimore and Dann Huff, in conjunction with Marti Frederiksen) obviously think the best way to make an R&B/pop record is to build a huge, airless production around screeching guitars, wall-rattling drums, and Big Mama choirs. The singer herself may be, indeed, turning out her best vocals ever. But the album itself is a self-conscious mess--a big, wallowing cacophony of sound that leaves the listener numb. In the end, it's a miserable failure. This chanteuse's R&B just ain't got no soul. --Alanna Nash

[2005] Listen To Your Heart - DHT [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 04 Jan 2009 04:38 AM CST

Review by David Jeffries @ allmusic.com
Dancy pop duo D.H.T. surprised everyone when they landed their European hit "Listen to Your Heart" in Billboard's Top Ten pop singles. Euro-dance covers of pop tunes -- a 1992 one by Roxette in this case -- don't make much of an impression outside of the clubs in America, save a couple campy singles from Amber, DJ Sammy, and the granddaddy of the all, DJ Miko. The big difference between D.H.T. and the above is that this Belgian team put less camp in their thumping and pumping pop anthems, and they construct better albums because of it. Listen to Your Heart the album balances dance numbers and ballads, covers and original songs, and happy and sad about as well as any light-as-a-feather pop act can. While they may be light, D.H.T. put such an elegant and slick sheen on their music it's forgivable for anyone who doesn't fit the definition of "jaded," plus their oddball choice of covers turns this seemingly shallow act into something more interesting. Their chamber music take on Paul Davis' soft rock favorite "I Go Crazy" is warm and tasteful while their camp-free version of Janis Ian's "At Seventeen" works much better than it should. How they found "I Can't Be Your Friend" -- a modest hit by country act Rushlow -- is a head-scratcher, but that they turn Sniff 'n' the Tears' "Driver's Seat" into a ponderous ballad instead of the floor-filling anthem they're obviously capable of is puzzling and the most misguided moment on the album. Exciting and fun original songs like the vacation getaway "Sun" make up for it, along with the neat, clean, perfect production and singer Edmee's exceptional voice

[2004] Still Not Getting Any... - Simple Plan [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 04 Jan 2009 04:28 AM CST

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com

Inevitably labeled "pop punk," Simple Plan's sophomore album finds the Montreal quintet settling in as a straight-ahead rock band. Yes, lyrically, their concerns remain grounded in the adolescent petulance and alienation of classic punk. They're "the ones you love to hate." "You don't know what it's like to be me," they insist. "We're the kids that you pushed away," they huff. Musically, however, the follow-up to 2002's popular No Pads, No Helmets…Just Balls finds the band moving toward a strain of radio-friendly rock that owes less and less to the punk canon. Opener (and album highlight) "Shut Up!" "Me Against the World," and "Perfect World" boast sweeping choruses and Pierre Bouvier's spit-in-your-eye vocals. But strings creep into "Welcome to My Life" and the closer, "Untitled," is a heart-on-his-sleeve piano lament that owes more to Night Ranger than the Ramones. This one will appeal to fans who prefer the "pop" side of the "pop punk" equation. --Steven Stolder

[2002] Justified - Justin Timberlake [Mp3 Download]

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com
Common wisdom holds that debut albums have an autobiographical slant, so it's hard to believe that Justin Timberlake's first non-'N Sync outing doesn't purloin much of its subject matter from the singer's breakup with Britney Spears. Half the songs are about the abrupt severing of a romance and the singer's rather hard-hearted stance. Sure, he may have been the wronged party, but that doesn't excuse the inflexible emotional posture revealed in "Cry Me a River," "Never Again," and the sniping "Last Night." But Timberlake apparently thinks it does, since he christened his record Justified. He also seems to enjoy boasting about the swinging single life, with many of the songs here almost gratuitously lascivious. Asides like "I could think of a couple positions for you" from "Right for Me" and "Better have you naked by the end of this song" from "Rock Your Body" will catapult the singer right off Radio Disney. But Timberlake shines when he moonwalks into more adult terrain, turning his back on the innocent dance pop that put 'N Sync on the charts. With the help of hip-hop producers Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo of the Neptunes, Timbaland, and P. Diddy, Timberlake has turned out a remarkably cohesive and sophisticated slice of club-friendly R&B. --Jaan Uhelszki

Nirvana Collection [9 Albums] [Mp3 Download]

Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine & Greg Prato @ allmusic.com
Prior to Nirvana, alternative music was consigned to specialty sections of record stores and major labels considered it to be, at the very most, a tax write-off. After the band's second album, 1991's Nevermind, nothing was ever quite the same, for better and for worse. Nirvana popularized punk, post-punk, and indie rock, unintentionally bringing it into the American mainstream like no other band before it. While its sound was equal parts Black Sabbath (as learned by fellow Washington underground rockers the Melvins) and Cheap Trick, Nirvana's aesthetics were strictly indie rock. They covered Vaselines songs, they revived new wave cuts by Devo, and leader Kurt Cobain relentlessly pushed his favorite bands -- whether it was the art punk of the Raincoats or the country-fried hardcore of the Meat Puppets -- as if his favorite records were always more important than his own music. While Nirvana's ideology was indie rock and melodies were pop, the sonic rush of their records and live shows merged the post-industrial white noise with heavy metal grind. And that's what made the group an unprecedented multi-platinum sensation. Jane's Addiction and Soundgarden may have proven to the vast American heavy metal audience that alternative could rock, and the Pixies may have merged pop sensibilities with indie rock white noise, but Nirvana pulled at all together, creating a sound that was both fiery and melodic. Since Nirvana was rooted in the indie aesthetic, but loved pop music, they fought their stardom while courting it, becoming some of the most notorious anti-rock stars in history. The result was a conscious attempt to shed their audience with the abrasive In Utero, which only partially fulfilled the band's goal. But by that point, the fate of the band and Kurt Cobain had been sealed. Suffering from drug addiction and manic depression, Cobain had become destructive and suicidal, though his management and label were able to hide the extent of his problems from the public until April 8, 1994, when he was found dead of a self-inflicted shotgun wound. Cobain may not have been able to weather Nirvana's success, but the band's legacy stands as one of the most influential in rock & roll history.
