Ace Of Base - Flowers (1998)

Posted: 06 Jan 2009 06:21 AM CST

Review by Jose F. Promis @ allmusic.com
Flowers is the original version of Ace of Base's third album, which in the U.S. became Cruel Summer. Flowers contains 14 tracks as opposed to Cruel Summer's 12, some of which appear in alternate versions. For example, "Donnie," a gem of a track which should have been a hit, is somewhat under-produced and unrealized on Flowers but truly shines on Cruel Summer, and other tracks, such as "He Decides," also appear as earlier mixes on Flowers. "Life Is a Flower," from Flowers, became "Whenever You're Near Me" on Cruel Summer. Three tracks appear on Flowers that aren't on Cruel Summer, and those are "Dr. Sun," "I Pray," and the melancholy "Captain Nemo," while Cruel Summer's ballad "Everytime It Rains" doesn't appear on Flowers. Flowers also includes the song lyrics, which Cruel Summer lacks. Finally, the bonus mix of the single "Cruel Summer" is arguably superior on Flowers than on Cruel Summer. In the long run, however, the production on Cruel Summer is meatier than on Flowers.

Track List
01. "Life is a Flower" – 3:47
02. "Always Have, Always Will" – 3:46
03. "Cruel Summer (Cutfather & Joe Mix)" – 3:35
04. "Travel to Romantis" – 4:10
05. "Adventures In Paradise" – 3:32
06. "Dr. Sun" – 3:35
07. "Cecilia" – 3:55
08. "He Decides" – 3:09
09. "I Pray" – 3:18
10. "Tokyo Girl" – 3:36
11. "Don't Go Away" – 3:41
12. "Captain Nemo" – 4:02
13. "Donnie" – 4:39
14. "Cruel Summer (Big Bonus Mix)" – 4:07
15. "Cruel Summer (duet with Alliage)" (bonus track for French release) – 3:28

[1996] Peace on Earth - Kitaro [Mp3 Download]

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine @ allmusic.com
Even though Peace on Earth is Kitaro's first holiday album, it won't offer any surprises to longtime fans of the musician -- it's very similar in style to all of his previous records. That doesn't mean it sounds tired. Kitaro is an inventive musician and he's discovered how to vary his sound, making it fresh most of the time. To some listeners, his style might be a little too restrained and distant for carols, but to those familiar with Kitaro, Peace on Earth will be a satisfying, atmospheric and intriguing holiday record.

Cara Dillon - Cara Dillon (2002)

Posted: 06 Jan 2009 06:10 AM CST

Review by Jason MacNeil @ allmusic.com
Although this is her debut offering, Cara Dillon sings with a confidence yet fragility way beyond her years. From the Irish traditional lilt on Donald of Glencoe to the gentleness of Craigie Hill, the singer has a very distinct delivery that is greatly enhanced by a sparse arrangement that has an almost ethereal result. There is also an earthy quality to her voice, which is indicative of her traditional Celtic roots. The Lonesome Scenes of Winter is perhaps the highlight of the record, with a simple lullably-like melody about love and foreseeable marriage. Although there are certain areas which are slightly overproduced, the general feeling of purity isn't lost from start to finish. What is very attractive though about the album is how the songs have a lot of empty space within, allowing various instrumentation to come to the fore. The closing and longest track, I Am A Youth That's Inclined To Ramble, is very poignant and bittersweet. If there is a negative or possible hint of filler material, it would be She's Like The Swallow, which seems out of place in the album's tracklisting and much too modern in light of the other songs. Regardless though, the album is hopefully a sign of things to come from a true gem.

"Though I hate paris hilton so much,I'think her single 'nothing in' .. is not bad"

Editorial Reviews

Reality show star, amateur porn hobbyist and regular party fixture; hotel heiress Paris Hilton has decided she would also like to try her hand at being a pop singer. Just because you suspect she hasn't had any formal musical training, never paid dues by belting her heart out with the Mickey Mouse Club, or that she quite possibly bought her way into this whole racket on an expensive whim shouldn't stop you from spending a few frothy minutes with her opening shot, Paris. The single "Stars Are Blind" has a nice breezy faux-reggae vibe, producer Scott Storch sprinkles several tracks with his billion-dollar beats and there's even a tuneless version of "Do Ya Think of Sexy" that actually makes the original sound good. Pulling that off takes some talent, right? – Aidin Vaziri

[2002] Shine - Bond [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 06 Jan 2009 05:39 AM CST

Review by E. A Solinas "ea_solinas" (MD USA) @Amazon.com
Bond is one of those great groups that pops up every now and then, with a dash of genuine originality rather than the same-old-same-old-packaged-as-something-new. Don't discount these gals because of their pretty faces or their outfits -- they can outplay just about anybody.

Among the songs are the layered, ethereal-yet-danceable "Allegretto," harp-accentuated "Shine" with its brilliant violin work, fast-paced "Fuego," haunting "Strange Paradise" with its softer tones and occasional electronic flares, antiquated-feeling "Big Love Adagio" (which would make the ideal romantic dance music), the spicy "Gypsy Rhapsody," and several others. One thing that Bond can never be accused of is of having all their songs sound alike.

The major selling point of Bond is that they take the traditionals and make them more accessable to the masses. That sounds like a bad thing, but the fact is that they give such musicians as cellists a better, younger, less fuddy-duddy image, a better chance of reaching out to people. But of course this isn't enough to appeal to people. Their music is wonderful, multilayered and rippling with the different instruments.

If you say you hate instrumentals, you might want to check out the Bond girls (I imagine they hear that joke all the time). They do for those instrumentals what Sarah Brightman does for opera, meaning that they bring some appeal for the masses. Quite a find.

[2006] Just My Luck - McFly [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 06 Jan 2009 05:34 AM CST

Review by Corey Apar@allmusic.com
First glances at London's McFly could cause one to believe the fresh-faced quartet is something of another boy band-esque group that happens to play its own instruments. However, surprise will quickly set in upon pressing play on the polished Just My Luck, as the guys are actually closer in sound to pop-rockers the Monkees, the Beach Boys or even the one-hit fabrication that was the Wonders (yup, that band from Tom Hanks' flick, That Thing You Do!). Despite being ridiculously overproduced, the album does have its merits, and beams sunshine through its sparkling rhythms, shimmering vocal harmonies, and catchy, layered melodies. McFly are indeed competent musicians who already seem to understand how to make an appealing record. And well, the album should be chock-full of welcoming songs that are easy on the ears, as these Brits have just about taken cues for everything they do from the masters of pop who have come before them. Regardless of adolescent lyrics, every song sounds rather like a modern version of a pop/rock hit from somewhere in history that can't always be placed, and instead of actually listening to the songs at face value, initial spins are unconsciously spent going through a "where have I heard this song before?" list in one's head. McFly wear the influence of bands like the Beatles and the Beach Boys so blatantly on their collective sleeve it's oozing from practically every note played. Additionally, string arrangements are not used for mere dramatic effect in one single, requisite heartwarming/heart-tearing ballad as so many groups do, but appear over the entire record. And oftentimes, the strings are actually full-on orchestral arrangements that, when they're not turning innocent tracks into pure cheese, sound so disturbingly like a '40s musical backdrop, one can virtually see Judy Garland running around in the distance about to break out in song. Though an admittedly pleasurable and sunny listen overall, unless you're still distractedly doodling hearts and flowers on a social studies folder, there most likely won't be any need or desire to pick this album up.

Tracy Chapman - New Beginning (1995)

Posted: 06 Jan 2009 05:29 AM CST

Review by William Ruhlmann @ allmusic.com
One might assume that the difference between Tracy Chapman's third album, which spent less than three months in the charts and failed to go gold after her first two albums had sold in the millions, and her fourth, which restored her to substantial commercial success, was the album's hit single, "Give Me One Reason." In fact, after a disappointing start, New Beginning turned around and started selling a few months after its release and before the single took off. It went gold the week that "Give Me One Reason" hit the charts. Of course, having a hit single helps, too, but since "Give Me One Reason" is a nearly generic blues song that isn't particularly characteristic of Chapman or of the album, it may have brought in an audience that didn't get what it expected. Though she has added a backup band, Chapman continues to take a simple musical approach that focuses attention on her voice and to sing lyrics that alternate between intimate emotional portraits and broad political generalizations that seem more felt than deeply thought out. Three songs here, "Heaven's Here on Earth," "The Rape of the World," and the title cut, are about the state of the whole world, which is viewed in either excessively sunny or gloomy terms. As such, Chapman's relationship songs, though they too can be a little vague, register more powerfully because they are so personal. As the title suggests, Chapman is adopting a more open and hopeful posture in both her feelings and her politics on New Beginning, and while the surprise success of "Give Me One Reason" is heartening from a career perspective, that's the real news here.

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com
Jesse McCartney is so pinup-ready, so boy-bandishly appealing in that shaggy-sweet kind of way, that anyone older than 17 will likely be rolling their eyes at him. You know what comes next: they shouldn't. In a classic case of can-that-many-teenage-girls-be-wrong?, McCartney's solo debut sparkles—the danceable tracks call to mind Michael Jackson in his early '80s heydey, the ballads reek of Babyface, and the rest rolls up Hall & Oates, Craig David, and flecks of Usher into a rib-sticking concoction anybody with an ear for pop will want to swallow whole. It's not exactly brain food—the tracks he co-wrote, including standout and opener "She's No You," "What's Your Name," and "That Was Then," are little more than smooth, shiny come-ons telling high school girls what they want to hear. And there's no denying the disc is front-loaded, with the relationshippy stuff starting to wear as track 12 approaches. But despite those things—and despite the name he's made for himself on TV (first on All My Children and more recently on WB's Summerland), which will only add to his early panning among "serious" listeners—Beautiful Soul sets out plenty of reasons to believe that this heartthrob, no matter how long his tousle-haired beauty holds up, has got soul to burn. --Tammy La Gorce

[2001] Born - Bond [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 06 Jan 2009 05:02 AM CST

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com
Born, the debut album by four conservatory-trained young women, has little to do with classical music. It's a gimmick, fusing a string quartet of frivolous femmes, spicy girls who all want to be "Posh," with dance beats, a big production mixing their violins, viola, and cello with polished electronics. Taking themselves less than seriously--they played the James Bond theme at their Royal Albert Hall debut--pop "Victory" looks assured. This single bounces along with a dash of Rossini's Barber of Seville and a real sense of pop melodrama, in spirit little different from what guitarist John Williams did with his rather less photogenic band Sky in the late 1970s. What may surprise is that tracks such as the frenetic world-dance "Quixote" are penned by the film composer Magnus Fiennes, brother of the more famous Ralph and Joseph. "Winter" adds Jean Michel Jarre-style synth and voice-over to the ghost of Vivaldi and the infectious beat goes on, and on, and on. Sex sells, and Bond's success seems assured. This is a state-of-the-art product, but with a bonus remix of "Victory" by Mike Batt of Wombles fame, just don't expect it to be art. --Gary S. Dalkin

[2005] #1's - Destiny's Child [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 06 Jan 2009 04:45 AM CST

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com

Destiny's Child began in 1990 as a novelty act aimed at teenagers. But they exceeded all expectations, both commercially and artistically, becoming a platinum-selling, multi-Grammy-winning sensation and attracting fans from all age groups and backgrounds with their dulcet, feisty-fresh harmonies and message of sisterly solidarity delivered with plenty of keep-it-real and love-over-all. Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams -- LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett left early on -- have broken ranks to devote themselves to their individual careers so the end of an era has been accomplished. But this collection is a bonanza for new fans and completists, capturing the band's chart-toppers in one place, augmented by Stand Up For Love plus a pair of pleasant but unessential other new tunes. The Dual-Disc B-Side contains a selection of videos, each of which display the ladies at their show-stopping, luscious best. It feels odd to think of this band in the past tense, so even while celebrating their past achievements, let's hope that they will continue to reunite whenever the spirit moves and for years to come. --Christina Roden

[2001] Gladiator [Soundtrack] [Mp3 Download]

Gladiator: More Music From the Motion Picture
Review by Evan Cater @ allmusic.com
This second soundtrack compilation for Ridley Scott's sword and toga epic, Gladiator, hit stores nine months after the movie's initial release. It was timed to capitalize on the film's front-runner status in the 2000 Oscar horse race, but it would be shortsighted to dismiss the disc as a wholly mercenary attempt to milk the Gladiator cash cow. Perhaps such claims would be warranted if Gladiator: More Music From the Motion Picture were what its title implies: a collection of excerpts from the film's original soundtrack that were left off of the first album. The initial album, Gladiator: Music From the Motion Picture, remains more than adequate as a summary of a highly eclectic and effective score which is not only Hans Zimmer's finest composition (thanks in large part to contributions by former Dead Can Dance vocalist Lisa Gerrard) but also one of the most original facets of an otherwise overblown and overrated blockbuster action flick. Thankfully, the second Gladiator CD is not merely an accumulation of leftover scraps of music. Rather, it is a fascinating audio diary, an inside look at the process of composing a film score. Zimmer's liner notes provide detailed accounts of the stories behind each discarded outtake and incomplete draft. One track is a fabulous vodka-inspired late-night jam between Zimmer's synthesizers and strings, Djivan Gasparyan's duduk, and Heitor Periera's Spanish guitar. Another is a faster, African-influenced version of Gerrard's stirring end credit theme, "Now We Are Free," that was abandoned for being too cheerful. It is clear from listening to the CD that these recordings were not rejected because the music was of an inferior quality to the final versions. In fact, some of these pieces are more inventive and listenable than anything on the soundtrack. They were cut simply because they did not meet the requirements of the narrative. Gladiator: More Music From the Motion Picture demonstrates strikingly not only how creative but also how exacting, meticulous, practical, and utilitarian a film composer must be.

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com
After rocking the suburbs with the infectious and persistent "Da Funk" (with its amusingly pointless Spike Jonze video), Gallic pranksters Daft Punk unleashed Homework, an album that combined everything good about house music with everything bad about French pop and changed the face of dance music in the process. The sound of production duo Thomas Bangalter and Guy Manuel de Homem is a raw and dirty collage of cheap drum machines (wired for maximum swing) welded to endless filtered loops and embellished with everything from guitars to talk-box vocals. The beats are lifted straight from the Chicago House textbook, but the simple bass lines and catchy hooks make a listenable pop song from what would normally be a stripped-down DJ tool. Uncompromising yet totally accessible. --Matthew Corwine

John Mayer - Inside Wants Out

Posted: 06 Jan 2009 04:19 AM CST

Review by William Ruhlmann @ allmusic.com
After John Mayer hooked up with producer John Alagia, who had previously worked with Dave Matthews, for his second album, Room for Squares, a lot of people heard him as a second Matthews. But a listen to Mayer's first album, Inside Wants Out, half of which turned up in re-recorded form on Room for Squares, is liable to remind the listener more of an earlier antecedent, 1970s folk-jazz performer Michael Franks of "Popsicle Toes" fame. Like Franks, Mayer here has a wheezy, phlegmatic tenor and, though he plays an acoustic guitar that is the focus of the arrangements even when a few other instruments are brought in, he does not restrict himself to folk chords, instead throwing in jazzy elements. His material is better when he cuts through the affectations, however. The best songs, neither of which were repeated on Room for Squares, are "Love Soon" and "Comfortable." In the latter, he sings to a former girlfriend about his current one, illuminating how different one love interest can be from another. "Life of the party, and she swears that she's arty," he notes of the new girl, "but you could distinguish Miles from Coltrane," clearly more of an attribute for him. Such an attention to detail in his lyrics (as well as an ear for a well-turned phrase such as his observation that the new girl "poses for pictures that aren't being taken") mark Mayer as an original songwriter, if sometimes a precious one. For the 2002 reissue on Columbia Records, Vlado Miller re-sequenced the brief album, putting the four songs re-used on Room for Squares up front, among them the hit "No Such Thing." But new fans should listen to the rest of the disc as well. They may hear Mayer in a more direct and honest way.
