Alanis Morissette - Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie (1998)

Posted: 09 Jan 2009 04:30 AM CST

Amazon.com
When Alanis Morissette visited Mother India in 1997, she gained new composure and, in a state of numinous bliss, wrote 17 songs for Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, each suffused with the search for enlightenment and self-knowledge. To the likely dismay of many fans, Morissette now rages at herself. But this long-awaited follow-up to 1995's record-smashing Jagged Little Pill is far from a disappointment. Imbued with dark, swirling psychedelic licks borrowed from Jimmy Page's song book, the disc is paradoxically both more enigmatic and revealing than Pill. And while Junkie shows that Morissette is no less stingy about revealing herself to her fans--her staccato stream-of-consciousness style is again employed to surrender her secrets and foibles a little too easily in these tales of abuse, lost love, and self-flagellation--Junkie also makes one wonder what this musical sphinx holds back. In "Baba" she takes on competitive spirituality, sneering at the fashionable grasp for enlightenment. "Would Not Come" returns to a similar theme--taking us on a tour of her diary. "Would Not Come" and "Your House" offer the only hints of sexual innuendo. The only revenge she wreaks on an errant lover is in the percussive "Are You Still Mad," this time dishing up a much subtler payback than on "You Oughta Know." The record's standouts, meanwhile, are "Thank U" and the hip-poppy "So Pure." One complaint (and there is only one): Morissette's rapid-fire wordplay is at times engulfed by ponderous instrumentation. The worldbeat rhythms and elaborate guitar play add fresh twists to the album, but they also sometimes bury her message. --Jaan Uhelszki

[2000] Shades of Purple - M2M[Mp3 Download]

Posted: 09 Jan 2009 04:25 AM CST

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com

Having already won a place in the hearts of American audiences with "Don't Say You Love Me" from the first Pokémon feature film, Norwegian duo M2M make impossibly sweet pop of the pubescent sort. Think '80s Debbie Gibson and current teen-beat towheaded brother group Hanson. More wholesome than Britney or Christina (and arguably more talented than both put together), M2M sport stylings akin to girl-pop top bananas TLC. Endearingly, Marit and Marion's Shades of Purple is a soundtrack for deliriously crushed-out teens right here, right now. The airwaves are ripe and ready for this comely twosome, whose delightful "Don't Say You Love Me" and "Mirror Mirror" are hot tickets to blissful wonder in 2000. The harmonies are tight, the hooks fresh and light, and these songs simply sound great pouring out of a car full of twinkly young girls with every hope for a bright, shiny day. --Paige La Grone

Aselin Debison - Sweet Is The Melody (2002)

Posted: 09 Jan 2009 04:20 AM CST

From Amazon.com
Will the '60s counterculture adage to "Never trust anyone over 30" become "Don't trust anyone over 14"? Pop's newfound fascination with the pre-driver's-license-eligible set is underscored by this debut from the 12-year-old Nova Scotia singing sensation and the same-named PBS television special it inspired. Produced by vets Peter Asher (Linda Ronstadt, 10,000 Maniacs) and George Massenberg (Garth Brooks, Aaron Neville), Debison's debut hews closely to a country-crossover tack that's a pleasant showcase for the crystalline innocence of her voice, if but a tantalizing hint at her potential. Whether soaring into a hormonally unchallenged falsetto on a Caribbean-inflected "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" or brightening up the Celtic-country "Driftwood" and contemporary Nashville of the title track, Debison's voice sometimes seems to want to go beyond the largely safe and sometimes pedestrian material she's been presented with here--and that's the sign of a promising future. --Jerry McCulley

Title: Amun Ra
Artist: Medwyn Goodall
Label: MG Music
Released: July 21, 2008
Genre: New Age

Medwyn's eagerly anticipated release of AMUN RA and his first solo release of 2008. We have had more enquiries and excitement for this release than any other before it. Every now and then Medwyn has that amazing ability to suddenly produce something exceptional, daringly original, and different to any path he's taken before. This is such an album. The buzz behind the scenes at MG Music is that this could launch a whole further sequels. Time will tell. The album is full of original authentic instruments from Egypt and many new sounds that Medwyn has never used before. It reminds us of when he discovered his south American style with Medicine Woman or the native American style with Great Spirit, his Celtic style with the Druid trilogy and King Arthur. They became landmarks in his remarkable career. This is an event to be excited about and the prediction of the MG Music staff is that it will be one the main releases of the year.

Mariah Carey - Charmbracelet (2002)

Posted: 08 Jan 2009 09:07 AM CST

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine @ allmusic.com
If it didn't follow Glitter, the gold standard for diva implosions in the early 21st century, Mariah Carey's Charmbracelet would simply be her worst album, but since it was rushed out in late 2002 in an effort to mask that disaster, to treat it as if it never happened, it achieves a special kind of grandeur -- it's a botched attempt to restore a career after a botched attempt at a crossover. Of course, the Carey party line, including her new label Island (who has sponsored her vanity imprint, MonarC), claims her lone Virgin album, Glitter, shouldn't be considered an official Mariah album since it was a soundtrack, but not only does that theory not hold water (perhaps Purple Rain shouldn't be considered a Prince album, then?), it signals that everybody realizes that Glitter wasn't just a disaster, but that her whole ghetto-fabulous trip of the late '90s eroded her core MOR audience. So, with Charmbracelet, the backpedalling is immediately evident, from the demure photos gracing the artwork (the tight shorts of Rainbow are long gone) and the first single/opening track "Through the Rain," a slow ballad designed as "Vision of Love" meets "Hero." Mariah is back in the adult contemporary camp, no longer trying to prove that she's real. She hasn't completely abandoned hip-hop, but whenever it rears its head on Charmbracelet, it's utterly jarring, whether it's Jay-Z's and Freeway's guest spots on "You Got Me," the club-ready groove of "You Had Your Chance" (built on the same bassline as "Nuthin' but a G Thang"), or the blatant rewrite of Cam'ron's "Oh Boy" on "Boy (I Need You)" (he may endorse it with a cameo, yet the sampled vocal hook remains singularly annoying no matter how its presented), or the crackling vinyl used as ambient noise on "Irresistible," or the distracting use of dripping water as percussion on "I Only Wanted." Weirdly enough, even these detours are nothing more than flourishes -- window-dressing on songs that remain firmly in the middle of the road, since that's where the sales are, or at least where Mariah's aging fan base is. This, of course, is not a problem, since she's done hip-hop-influenced dance tunes and ballads very well before. What is a problem is that there are no good songs on this record outside of Def Leppard's power ballad classic "Bringin' on the Heartbreak," which isn't even covered all that well. What is a greater problem is that Mariah's voice is shot, sounding in tatters throughout the record. Whenever she sings, there's a raspy whistle behind her thin voice and she strains to make notes throughout the record. She cannot coo or softly croon, nor can she perform her trademark gravity-defying vocal runs. Her voice is damaged, and there's not a moment where it sounds strong or inviting. That alone would be disturbing, but since the songs are formless and the production bland -- another reason why the hip-hop announces itself, even though it's nowhere near as pronounced as it has been since Butterfly -- her tired voice becomes the only thing to concentrate on, and it's a sad, ugly thing, making an album that would merely have been her worst into something tragic

[2000] Forever - Spice Girls [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 08 Jan 2009 08:57 AM CST

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com

Since we last heard from them, the Spice Girls have hired new producers and writers, hoping to adopt an R&B edge with harder beats and a grittier sound. Gone are the cuddly wannabes of yesteryear, replaced by thinner, tougher glamazons of the new millennium Spice World. But Forever's strategy is a serious misstep--one that will disappoint their old fans and alienate new ones. "Holler," the first single, is standard-issue urban pop, with a beat you've heard before and terribly generic lyrics, promising to make you "do things you thought you would never do." As a matter of fact, you've heard all of this before: for "Tell Me Why," the Girls bite the computer-generated voice from TLC's Fan Mail, and borrow the vocoder from Cher's "Believe" sessions. "Right Back at Ya," their official comeback anthem, is trite and predictable: "Our friendship is forever," Baby Spice testifies. "You thought we wouldn't make it this far," Sporty sneers, and she's right. But they haven't made it yet--and with this material they don't deserve to. --Courtney Kemp

Robin Spielberg - In the Arms of the Wind (1999) | All Music for Soul

Posted: 08 Jan 2009 08:46 AM CST

This is the sixth album from composer/pianist Robin Spielberg, and is every bit as good or better than her critically acclaimed best-seller, "Songs of the Spirit". The feel of the album reflects Robin's own gentle and optimistic personality, but this album is no snooze! One of the things that makes the recording exceptional is the way it starts out quietly, builds, becomes quiet again, builds, and ends on a very peaceful note. The instrumentation is excellent with Robin's piano sometimes solo and sometimes joined by cello, fiddle, flute, oboe, guitar, orchestra bells, and even accordion and bouzouki!
The album opens with "Dancing in the Gentle Rain", as lovely and refreshing as the title. The next two tracks are also soothing. Then we meet an elephant in the supermarket, which has to inspire a smile! "Butterfly" is a perfect musical description of a butterfly dancing in the spring sunshine. The title track tells the Sufi Teaching Story of a stream that had easily traveled through all sorts of terrain until it reached the desert. Each time it tried to cross, it found itself being absorbed by the sand. The Voice of the Desert told the stream that the wind crosses with ease, and that the stream could evaporate and be carried over the desert "in the arms of the wind". By trusting this voice, the stream was transported across the desert, fell as gentle rain on the other side, and went on its way. Robin strongly identifies with this story, and it really shows in the emotional content of this song. The orchestra bells in the background are soothing and haunting, and sounds of the wind carrying the stream are gorgeous. "Take the Time (Learning to Knit)" is patience set to music. "The Softball Game/A Swim at the Quarry" contrasts the lively pace of a ballgame on a hot afternoon with the serenity of a cool swim among the giant rocks. "Dawn at Walden Place" was composed in Robin's head one very cold winter as she was waiting for the early-morning bus to take her to New York City. She composed the piece by trying to keep the melody and counter-melody going in her head to take her mind off the cold. "Drombeg Stone Circle Dance" becomes a stirring celebration of the ancient rituals that were held on that site in Ireland. "Kitten's First Snow" makes me smile, as I too love cats. "Dream On" is the perfect closing piece for this album, and it feels like Robin is saying "So long for now".
I highly recommend this album to anyone who enjoys other pianist/composers such as Suzanne Ciani and David Lanz, or anyone who loves sincere, optimistic melodies. -- amazon.com

John Mayer - Continuum (2006)

Posted: 08 Jan 2009 08:31 AM CST

Review by Matt Collar @ allmusic.com
Anybody who was initially confused by singer/songwriter John Mayer's foray into blues with 2005's Try! John Mayer Trio Live in Concert could only have been further confounded upon listening to the album and coming to the realization that it was actually good. And not just kinda good, especially for guy who had been largely labeled as a Dave Matthews clone, but really, truthfully, organically good as a blues album in its own right. However, for longtime fans who had been keeping tabs on Mayer, the turn might not have been so unexpected. Soon after the release of his 2003 sophomore album, the laid-back, assuredly melodic Heavier Things, Mayer began appearing on albums by such iconic blues and jazz artists as Buddy Guy, B.B. King, and Herbie Hancock. And not just singing, but playing guitar next to musicians legendary on the instrument. In short, he was seeking out these artists in an attempt to delve into the roots of the blues, a music he obviously has a deep affection for. Rather than his blues trio being a one-off side project completely disconnected to his past work, it is clear now that it was the next step in his musical development. And truthfully, while Try! certainly showcases Mayer's deft improvisational blues chops, it's more of a blues/soul album in the tradition of such electric blues legends as Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, and features songs by Mayer that perfectly marry his melodic songcraft and his blues-slinger inclinations. In fact, what seemed at the time a nod to his largely female fan base (the inclusion of "Daughters" and "Something's Missing" off Heavier Things) was actually a hint that he was bridging his sound for his listeners, showing them where he was going.
That said, nothing he did up until the excellent, expansive Try! could have prepared you for the monumental creative leap forward that is Mayer's 2006 studio effort, Continuum. Working with his blues trio/rhythm section of bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan, along with guest spots by trumpeter Roy Hargrove and guitarist Ben Harper, Mayer brings all of his recent musical explorations and increasing talents as a singer/songwriter to bear on Continuum. Produced solely by Mayer and Jordan, the album is a devastatingly accomplished, fully realized effort that in every way exceeds expectations and positions Mayer as one of the most relevant artists of his generation. Adding weight to the notion that Mayer's blues trio is more than just a creative indulgence, he has carried over two tracks from the live album in "Vultures" and the deeply metaphorical soul ballad "Gravity." These are gut-wrenchingly poignant songs that give voice to a generation of kids raised on TRL teen stars and CNN soundbites who've found themselves all grown up and fighting a war of "beliefs." Grappling with a handful of topics -- social and political, romantic and sexual, pointedly personal and yet always universal in scope -- Mayer's Continuum here earns a legitimate comparison to Marvin Gaye's What's Going On. Nobody -- not a single one of Mayer's contemporaries -- has come up with anything resembling a worthwhile antiwar anthem that is as good and speaks for their generation as much as his "Waiting on the World to Change" -- and he goes and hangs the whole album on it as the first single.
It's a bold statement of purpose that is carried throughout the album, not just in sentiment, but also tone. Continuum is a gorgeously produced, brilliantly stripped-to-basics album that incorporates blues, soft funk, R&B, folk, and pop in a sound that is totally owned by Mayer. It's no stretch when trying to describe the sound of Continuum to color it in the light of work by such legends as Sting, Eric Clapton, Sade, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Steve Winwood. In fact, the sustained adult contemporary tone of the album could easily have become turgid, boring, or dated but never does, and brings to mind such classic late-'80s albums as Sting's Nothing Like the Sun, Clapton's Journeyman, and Vaughan's In Step. At every turn, Continuum finds Mayer to be a mature, thoughtful, and gifted musician who fully grasps his place not just in the record industry, but in life.

Kevin Kern - Summer Daydreams (1998) | All Music for Soul

The title of pianist and composer Kevin Kern's third album is an apt one, for the opening notes of "Le Jardin," the first track on Summer Daydreams, would not be out of place accompanying the opening credits of a Merchant-Ivory film. Not that this is a bad thing. Kern's music has a kind of sensitive grace and his arrangements allow plenty of room for violin (Jeremy Cohen), cello (Thalia Moore), Luis Baez (clarinet), and Bob Ward (French horn). Much of the music on Summer Daydreams is in this vein: slow, sweet, and soothing. There are a few more adventurous exceptions, notably "Pan's Return" (the opening of which rather reminds one of the beginning of the movie Braveheart) and "Dance of the Dragonfly," a lilting piano piece that is the most evocative on the recording. --Genevieve Williams

Christina Aguilera - Mi Reflejo (2000)

Posted: 08 Jan 2009 08:10 AM CST

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine @ allmusic.com
When Christina Aguilera's eponymous debut reached multi-platinum status in the summer of 1999, the charts were also ruled by the Latin pop explosion, headed by Ricky Martin. Since Aguilera had Ecuadoran heritage, recording a Latin pop album was appropriate, even if she didn't know how to speak the language. Besides, a Latin album was an easy way to buy time for an artist waiting to produce an eagerly awaited sequel to a blockbuster album. So, she knocked out the record that became Mi Reflejo in 1999 and 2000, between tours and video shoots. She learned the words phonetically, but she already knew most of the melodies, since the bulk of the album was Spanish-language versions of songs on the debut album. In other words, it was a mirror image of the debut -- her Spanish reflection, as it were. This results in an album that is just a little too familiar, even if it's classy and well-produced and spiked with a couple of new tunes that hold their own with the holdovers. Even so, it's hard to view Mi Reflejo as anything other than a bit of a pleasant holding pattern; it's enjoyable as it spins, but it doesn't add anything new to her music, since it's just the old music in new clothing.

Sibel - The Diving Belle (2008)

Posted: 08 Jan 2009 08:00 AM CST

An appearance on Swedish Idol generally spells success on the Scandinavian pop charts, however fleeting, for most of those who make it into the final stages of the competition. Sibel Redzep (otherwise known as Sibel) is no exception. Having returned to the competition after an unimpressive run in 2004, Sibel made it to the final three before finally succumbing to Sebastian Karlsson and Agnes Carlsson. After three years of relative quiet, Sibel reemerged at the 2008 Melodifestivalen competition with "That Is Where I'll Go." She managed to make it to the second round of the contest and went on to win seventh place. Sibel's debut full-length, The Diving Belle, which featured her Melodifestivalen single, hit stores on March 15th of that year, only three days after the competition came to a close. "That Is Where I'll Go" shot to number six on the Swedish charts soon after, and the album went on to peak at number nine.

Laura Pausini - Io Canto (2006)

Amazon.com
Italian, Spanish, or English: Laura Pausini's edgy, electric vocals are some of the most vibrant in contemporary pop. The endearing diva has been around for more than a decade, but the 2004 disc Escucha found her enjoying a newfound musical independence and worldwide success. Yo Canto is a long-brewing project dear to Pausini's heart: a collection of Italian pop covers spanning her lifetime. As with most of Pausini's releases, the disc is available in Italian and in Spanish. Yo Canto veers from dramatic balladry to fiery rock moments, anchored by Pausini's swooping, powerful vocal work. Several songs will be unfamiliar to fans outside of Italy, but it hardly matters. Pausini makes every moment her own, from the triumphant title track to the bittersweet "Escribeme." She's joined by international rock star Juanes during the lovely, lilting "Mi Libre Cancion." And fellow Italian pop idol Tiziano Ferro joins in for a new take on his brooding 2003 hit, "No Me Lo Puedo Explicar." There are many moments of sublime loveliness here. In other words, just another day in the musical life of Pausini. --Joey Guerr
