Merge Records 20th Anniversary Music Festival

Posted: 11 Jan 2009 11:45 AM CST

Today marks the final deadline to sign up for the SCORE! Merge Records: The First 20 Years subscription. The collection includes 14 CDs curated by celebrities from David Byrne to Miranda July to Amy Poehler, a Merge remix CD, a Merge covers album, a 350+ page book of Merge cover art, a comedic CD by Scharpling & Wurster, a custom designed storage box and surprise goodies throughout 2009 all for just $199.00. This subscription offer is not available in stores or through other digital retailers: you  must subscribe through Merge.

The Shins are the latest contributors to hand in their track for the Merge covers album featured in the SCORE! Merge Records: The First 20 Years subscription-only box set, joining a line-up featuring Ryan Adams, Bright Eyes, Broken Social Scene, Death Cab For Cutie, The National, the New Pornographers and many others. SCORE! subscribers will receive the covers collection a month ahead of its April retail release.

Merges’ 20th Anniversary festivities continue with the announcement of XX MERGE, five days of live music from Merge artists past and present taking place in the label’s native North Carolina July 22-26. Lineup and ticket information will be announced shortly. If it’s half as fun as the last 20th birthday party we attended for a record label, we can’t wait!

XX Merge will be commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Merge label, which began in 1989 in Chapel Hill NC, with a handful of 4-track recordings, a couple of cassette tapes, and some hand-stuffed 7″ vinyl. Literally hundreds of singles, albums, and late nights later, Merge will be celebrating its past, present and future throughout 2009. XX Merge will be the label’s party to mark this anniversary: five days of music by Merge artists past and present in the summer heat of sunny North Carolina.

All proceeds from SCORE! Merge Records: The First 20 Years project will benefit specific charitable causes handpicked by the curators.

One Pin Short @ The House of Blues, Hollywood

Posted: 11 Jan 2009 10:15 AM CST

It’s amazing how you can attend three reggae/ska shows in a weekend and somehow, each band has their own distinct style, sound, and personality. One Pin Short’s performance at The House of Blues was possibly the most engaging performance yet. Their sound, which is reminiscent of Sublime, is mostly reggae with a dash of ska: their song “Wysterian Lilac” has an excellent introductory blues riff and I, for one, adored it.

The seven piece band out of Las Vegas, Nevada put on quite an energetic set for such laid back, feel-good music. Although every band experiences an increase in tempo while playing live, I enjoyed their faster tempo much more than the recorded songs featured on their MySpace page (of course, that is blatantly opinion, music hits people in individual ways and I, for one, will not undermine this band’s tempo simply because I enjoyed the ska that came hurdling out of their performance of “Waiting”).Their brass section was completely epic; a very dominant force in their performance. Hawaiian lead singer Shawn Garnett was quite comical throughout the set, and provided the perfect voice for his band’s intended sound. The good energy that flowed from that stage was quite overwhelming, and as soon as they plunged into a cover of Sublime’s “Garden Grove”, I knew I was completely enamored.

One Pin Short’s debut album, Waiting, is currently available for your listening pleasure. The band is also on tour (dates below), so be sure to check them out when they come your way. Trust me, they are definitely worth the cover charge.

Tour Dates:
Jan 16 - The Bunkhouse Saloon / Las Vegas
Jan 17 - The Living Room / Tuscon
Jan 20 - House of Blues / Las Vegas
Feb 06 - Hard Rock Hotel-Wasted Space / Las Vegas
Feb 07 - The Knitting Factory / Hollywood
Mar 21 - Dooley's Tavern @ Oxford College of Emory University / Oxford, Ga.
Apr 25 - University of Memphis /  Memphis
May 01 - JC Atrium @ George Mason University / Fairfax, Va.
May 06 - Missouri Southern State University /  Joplin, Mo.
