Posted: 12 Jan 2009 04:25 PM CST Another short one for you all, but the last short one for a while. Next week the entry will be in full form. Spoon rocks. No doubt about it. We all know that. Besides talent in music, they have great album names and album covers. “Don’t You Evah” is a track off of their sixth album, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. It’s a cover of The Natural History’s song “Don’t You Ever”. Spoon’s version is pretty much done in typical Spoon fashion. It’s a mid-tempo track with brushed drums, funky bass lines, and jazzy guitars with stylish pitter-patter of conversation in the recording studio. Spoon released an EP in 2008 of “Don’t You Evah”, which featured remixes of the track by various artists. Two really stand out for me. Mark Mallman - Loneliness in America: Best of 1998-2008 Posted: 12 Jan 2009 02:25 PM CST I’m embarrassed to say that I had no idea who Mark Mallman was, but that’s the nice thing about “best of” albums. The hardcore fans get a compilation of some of their artists favorite tunes and then those that are unfamiliar get a chance to listen to that artist’s finest material all on one disc and discover why said artist is worthy of a “best of” disc in the first place. Mark Mallman’s Loneliness in America: Best of 1998-2008 features songs spanning seven releases and 22 tours as well as one new song. After listening to Loneliness in America, I was kicking myself for being unaware of this Minnesota musician for so long. Track after track either had me chuckling at his hilarious and ironic lyrics, “They call me Mr. Serious. I got so many dreams,” croons Mallman before talking about his lustfulness and love of sex by singing about hotels and parking lots. Now while other songs like “Butcher’s Ballad” have seriously depressing lyrics like “I saw a rabbit get run over by a Sedan,” Mallman is called “Mr. Serious” purely out of irony. Musically, Mallman is a brilliant pianist and perhaps that why he has earned the nickname “the fastest piano in the Midwest.” So while the effects of strings and percussion are nice, all other instruments are outdone by the brilliance of his piano. There are no tricks here: most of the songs on this album are live, so he really is playing that fast and stomping out chords all over those keys. There’s some dull moments, sure — “God Gone Mad” really dragged as an album closer — but for the most part, this album will have you rapt in Mallman’s humor and skill. And new song “Do You Feel Like Breaking Up?” fits in just as well with all the other hits. Now here’s the best part: Mark Mallman’s Loneliness in America: Best of 1998-2008 is available for free download. So don’t miss out and be sure to give this a listen. Anti-Flag to Play Inauguration Posted: 12 Jan 2009 12:15 PM CST On the night of President Elect Barack Obama’s inauguration, punk legends Anti-Flag will be headlining “Demand In DC: Applauding the Empowerment of People Thru Art, Film, and Music” at Washington DC’s The Black Cat, beginning at 7:30PM. In response to 2008’s historic and dramatic election, Anti-Flag continue their plight to encourage young people, musicians and artists to be committed activists in their communities. This show of art and music is meant as an act of empowerment in an exciting and critical time in our country. Supporting bands are Darkest Hour, United Nations, The A.K.A.s, and Ruiner. Artists that have contributed to the event will include HorseBites, Charles Stanley Doll IV, Mike Ski, Mitch Clem, Erik Davidson, David S. Holloway, Kencredible and Ben Lande. Local sponsor, Shirts for a Cure will auction off four Quilts for a Cure made from over 200 band shirts created to benefit cancer research since Shirts for a Cure's inception. When not playing shows to inspire political action, or rejoice in the election of Barry O., Anti-Flag are currently writing a new record, and have just confirmed Warped Tour dates for the summer! Punk Rock Flea Market Rescheduled! Posted: 12 Jan 2009 11:45 AM CST R5 Productions‘ Holiday Punk Rock Flea Market has finally been rescheduled following its unfortunate postponement shortly before it was supposed to occur on December 20th. It’s no longer a holiday flea market (of course the ‘punk rock’ remains in tact) and it’s no longer being held at Starlight Ballroom, as originally planned. In a somewhat shocking turn, the Punk Rock Flea Market will now be hosted at Philadelphia’s Electric Factory (a Live Nation venue, R5’s biggest competitor, not to mention “the man”) on February 1st from 10AM till 4:30PM. You may have noticed that the date for the PRFM is the same day as the Super Bowl, which may be problematic for the football watching inclined punk rock flea marketer, no worries though. The market ends at 4:30PM, plenty of time to get to the bar or to set up for your own Super Bowl party. And, my new reason for loving the guys of R5, should our beloved Eagles miraculously (GO EAGLES!) make it into the Super Bowl, a “rain date” for the flea market is scheduled for the following weekend. Even the punks in this town bleed green. Who knows how it happened (corporate entities are almost never this awesome), but the Electric Factory decided to be cool as hell and let R5 have the space for free (they just have to pay the employees)! R5 founder Sean explains it all in this blog post, here’s an excerpt:
So there you have it. With a bigger space, more tables are available to vendors! Those signed up for tables at the originally scheduled flea market will have their reservations honored and refunds will be given should a vendor wish to cancel due to the new date. New tables are up for reservation beginning Wednesday, January 14th. See you at the PRFM on February 8th R5 Productions: website | myspace Related Posts |
Posted: 12 Jan 2009 10:15 AM CST The Whigs are excited to announce they will again be supporting the Kings Of Leon on their North American tour beginning January 20th in Louisville, Kentucky before embarking on their own headlining stint in March (dates below). A highlight on the run with Kings of Leon will include a performance at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York City on January 29th. Following three extensive tours at the end of 2008 with The Kooks, Kings Of Leon and Tokyo Police Club and a New Year’s Eve show with Band Of Horses, The Whigs are thrilled to return to Georgia after the MSG date to begin writing their next album. 2008 marked a very rewarding year for the Athens, GA three-piece. The band released their highly anticipated and critically acclaimed ATO Records debut, Mission Control. They spent the entire year touring the world winning over fans with their fierce intensity and showed America how explosive their live shows are with raucous performances on “The Late Show with David Letterman”, “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live”. Reel Big Fish @ House of Blues, Hollywood Posted: 12 Jan 2009 08:45 AM CST Before attending the Reel Big Fish show at the House of Blues in Hollywood, a musical comrade of mine informed me that Reel Big Fish’s live set “blows.” Somewhat uneasy about this random protrusion of opinion, I decided that, if I dug their cameo in the 1998 comedy Baseketball, I was sure to dig the show. My opinionated friend couldn’t have been further from the truth. As soon as they hit the stage, I felt myself slip back to the Golden Age of ska. With performances of “Girlfriend” and “Beer”, it was almost as if the decade between their early 90’s debut and the present had been obliterated. As usual, the brass section was full of enthusiasm and comical theatrics, as well as some interesting threads. Reel Big Fish: website | myspace Words and photos: Tatum Hengel Related Posts |
