On The Starting Line... Funk Marathon 2

It's been awhile folks, so I hope no one forgot. When I brought you the first funk marathon, I promised 5 more volumes. Here's #2, in time to kick off the new year. This one is 8 hours, 54 minutes. I put these extended funk compilations together for driving, working and partying so tune in the for the long haul. This mix has a number of distinct sections. If you're really into obscure grooves follow it all the way through. I'd bother to list favorite tracks here and there but the truth is it took me much, much longer to put these together than it does to listen to them so there aren't many foul balls in this game. Gauge's 6-track demo

The homie Kevin Beacham of Time Travel Radio fame has been doing God's work this past week in T.R.O.Y. dropping gem after gem.

This one comes from Gauge aka The Mental Murderah and his 6-track demo tape from '95.

Some of you may remember Gauge's single "Cranium" featuring fellow Brooklynites The Cella Dwellas, but what some of you may not know is that Gauge was also managed by T-Dot rapper Maestro Fresh Wes who gave Kevin this demo for to review it for "Caught In The Middle."

Bio:

Growing up in the same neighborhood as Hip-Hop mainstays like Special Ed, Busta Rhymes, and The Cella Dwellas, Gauge learned his trade from legendary schoolyard battles. In 1990, Gauge, alongside fellow Brooklynite, Lord Have Mercy (now in Flipmode Squad), released the now-rare single "Order In The Court" from their group B.A.S.S. (Brothers About Sight and Sound). Gauge dropped the single "Cranium" b/w "Breathless" on Maestro Records which was extremely successful. In early 2000, Gauge stepped out with his third single, "Insane" b/w "Bring It To Me" feat. Special Ed and Phantasm from The Cella Dwellas. In 2001, he was working on his untitled album, which never saw the light of day. That EP featured production from Ge-ology, DJ Spinna, Nick Wiz, Ayatollah and SELF.

12. Lord Finesse "S.K.I.T.S." (Remix)

The original was sparser and more raw, but this remix is more layered, ringing, and insistent, which lends itself well to the tone of alarm being conveyed. Adding Big L to the chorus was an excellent decision.

14. Casual "That's How It Is" (Disshowwedo Remix)


15. Grand Puba ft. Sadat X "I Like It" (Buckwild Remix)

This one isn't hugely different from the hit original, but Buckwild manages to give it a more hardcore feel without sacrificing its mass appeal. Sadat X.'s cameo is one of his finest.

17. Aceyalone "Mic Check" (Kemo Remix)

Kemo's version of Aceyalone's catchy ode to rocking shows and raking in the dough was the top finalist in a remix contest announced on the original's sleeve. Besides being a banger of a beat, it also complements Aceyalone's whimsical vocals quite well.

18. Camp Lo "Coolie High" (Paradise Remix)

Only Camp-Lo can out-smooth Camp-Lo. This version pulls off that sultry slick nonsensical jewel heist vibe that these BX rhymers consistently aimed for in their heyday.

19. Bush Babees "Remember Me" (Salaam Remi Remix)


20. Alkaholiks "Mary Jane" (Remix)
