Mos Def Talks New Album, Bringing Def Poetry Back

Posted: 13 Jan 2009 01:14 PM CST

Mos Def

After almost three years since his last release, New York rapper Mos Def recently talked album details for his forthcoming album The Ecstatic.

Mos hinted at a few guest appearances and his aim to re-vive HBO's "Def Poetry."

"The name of the album is The Ecstatic. I titled it after one of my favorite novels by Victor LaValle and I'm really excited about it -- it's a lot shorter than some of my previous work but it's still really full. [Guests include] Slick Rick, Jay Electronica, Black Thought and working with Madlib."

"For 2009, I got a couple of different projects on deck. Definitely looking forward to bringing 'Def Poetry' back to television for at least one more season. I'd like to do it in New Orleans in the ninth ward." (Zune Insider)

The rapper-turned-actor's upcoming disc's production began last year.

Mos Def will release his Downtown debut, The Ecstatic, on Feb. 9. The first single, "Life in Marvelous Times," hit iTunes as an exclusive on Nov. 4. (Billboard)

Def's new release will be his fourth solo project after the unusual release of True Magic.

Mos Def released his third solo album, True Magic in 2006. A contract-fulfilling release for Geffen, which had absorbed Rawkus years prior, the album trickled out in a small run during the last week of 2006. Bizarrely, the disc came with no artwork and was sold in a clear plastic case -- though its single, "Undeniable," did manage to grab a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance. Months later, Geffen re-released it with full artwork and a slightly different track listing.

T.I. Preps For Road To Redemption

T.I.'s days of freedom may be limited, but the rapper is making a last stand to illustrate the seriousness of his pending prison sentence with his upcoming MTV reality show.T.I.'s Road to Redemption: 45 Days to Go will chronicle the rap star's final days leading up to his one-year stint behind bars.

During that time, the rapper made time to talk to school and community groups about his past issues and ways to avoid duplicating the missteps he made, that resulted in his imminent prison time. T.I. was sentenced to one year in prison on federal weapons charges after he was arrested in Atlanta in 2007 for allegedly trying to buy automatic weapons.

In addition to his prison time, the Atlanta entertainer was ordered to serve 1,000 hours of community service. The community service included talking to youth about the hazards of gang life, drugs and guns.

The docu-series, which began filming in June and will continue to shoot until March, will allow viewers a further look into T.I.'s world, as they share in the birth of his sixth child, the release of his latest album Paper Trail and efforts by the rapper to help a group of at-risk teens. Additionally, the show will look at T.I.'s struggle to manage his personal life while completing his required 1,000 hours of community service and coming to terms with going to jail at the height of his career. To date, T.I. has done 864 hours.

Road to Redemption is not designed to be part of the community service hours the entertainer has to complete before beginning his prison sentence on March 27. Overall, the rapper hopes the series will "scare teens straight" in an effort to steer them clear of the gang lifestyle and culture. T.I.'s Road to Redemption: 45 Days To Go will premiere February 10 on MTV.
