Grammy Awards 2009 - British Winners

There’s one huge story obviously dominating news of the Grammy Awards 2009 - Chris Brown being arrested for allegedly assaulting Rihanna. But that’s been covered to the nth degree in various different places, and the full details have yet to emerge.

So, as is my remit here at Brit Music Scene, I’d like instead to focus on the good that came out of this year’s ceremony. Several British artists went home with awards on the night, and they deserve the plaudits they are receiving.

Last year’s Grammy Awards were all about one British artist in particular, with Amy Winehouse winning five honors. She also performed live via satellite without screwing up, leading many of us to believe she was on the road to recovery. But that wasn’t to be.

The Grammy Awards 2009 saw the range of British artists winning much more diverse, and that’s a great indicator of the healthy state of British music at this point in time.

Coldplay won three Grammies, including ‘Best Rock Album’ for Viva La Vida. They also won ‘Best Rock Performance’ and ‘Song Of The Year’ for the single with the same name as the bestselling album.

Radiohead won ‘Best Alternative Album’ for In Rainbows. This was deserved not only for the fact that the album is top notch but for the innovative way in which it was originally released - the fans paying only what they wanted to.

Adele was the big solo British winner on the night, picking up a much-deserved brace of awards. She won ‘Best New Artist’ and ‘Best Female Pop Vocal Performance’ for Chasing Pavements. I’ve had mixed views on Adele since she came to prominence but I cannot deny that gorgeous voice deserves recognition.

Adele’s so-called direct competition, Duffy, also picked up a gong. The Welsh songstress won ‘Best Pop Vocal Album’ for her debut album, Rockferry. Again, a much deserved win and this pair of velvet-voiced singers prove that distinctly British voices can travel abroad.

Robert Plant came away from the night the biggest winner of all thanks to his collaboration with Alison Krauss. The pair picked up five awards in all, including ‘Record of The Year’ and ‘Album of The Year’. I can’t help thinking that this victory has killed off any chances of a Led Zeppelin reunion for good. After all, why would Plant bother when he’s doing fine on his own?
