[2006] Dreaming Through the Noise - Vienna Teng [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 02 Feb 2009 01:07 AM PST

Review by Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr. @ allmusic.com
Dreaming Through the Noise is, musically speaking, more about dreaming than noise, because Vienna Teng's album is never noisy. Instead, she cultivates a dense soundscape comprised of everything from guitars, percussion, and pianos to violins, violas, and string arrangements. The light timbre of Teng's vocals fit easily within this mesh, becoming yet another element in the overall sound. This approach is very seductive on "Love Turns 40," a moody lyric that captures the imagined feeling of an ex-cinema star on the downward slide. It's reminiscent of Natalie Merchant singing "San Andreas Fault," though Teng is less elliptical than Merchant. As attractive as Teng's approach is, it can grow a bit precious on songs like "I Don't Feel So Well," which gives the impression of Tori Amos-lite. There's also a tendency, thanks to the soft arrangements and production, for the material to meld together as though the songs were mini-suites inside a bigger work. These qualities do create a dream-like effect, allowing the listener to commingle with Teng's moods and float along with her songs. There are also some very nice touches, as with the Miles Davis-styled trumpet on "Transcontinental, 1:30 A.M." Dreaming Through the Noise may prove too sedate for some listeners, but Teng has done a good job combining music and mood, lyric and atmosphere, that goes beyond the typical singer/songwriter's method.

[2007] Lost Highway - Bon Jovi [Mp3 Download]

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com

Given the chart success of their Grammy-winning country single "Who Says You Can't Go Home," it's no surprise Bon Jovi upped the ante by recording an entire album paying homage to Nashville. In some ways, it's amazing they didn't do this sooner, given the way Keith Urban in particular is blurring country-pop lines, much as Garth Brooks and others did in the 1990s. To their credit, you won't find predictably shallow invocations of past country icons or any self-conscious, in-your-face down-home twang added strictly to remind the listener of the musical premise. In fact, Lost Highway isn't "Bon Jovi goes country" so much as a meaningful tribute to the Nashville ethos done on their own terms. They honor the spirit of the town through 12 simple, direct originals. The intimate, smoldering "(You Want To) Make a Memory," the ballad "Seat Next To You," "Lost Highway" and its roaring celebration of freedom, and "Stranger," an effective duet with LeAnn Rimes, all invoke country's spirit, and "I Love This Town," an eloquent nod to Nashville itself, ties it together admirably. --Rich Kienzle

El Goodo - Coyote (2009)

3. Don't Worry Marie
4. I Saw Her Today
5. Information Overload
6. Talking to the Birds
7. Pete
8. I Can't Make It

11. I Only Dream

El Goodo combines the mellow and melodious psychedelic sounds of the Beach Boys, The Byrds and Love with beautiful and lush arrangements that call upon the mystical countryside from whence they came. The result is the creation of a mysterious, sweepingly grand, and at times whimsical approach to their already eclectic soundscape. Their intoxicating sophomore release, Coyote, due January 2009 (Grease Records), is both sprawling and hauntingly deserted, evoking a sonic landscape both richly cultivated and desolate, with intensely poetic harmonies and darkly articulated instrumentation. "Aren't You Grand", "I Saw Her Today", "Talking to the Birds", and "Oh, to Sleep" feel cinematic, like a dark western cowboy soundtrack, juxtaposing surfy and at times summery melodies to create an ominous score. "Feel So Fine", "Be My Girl", and "I Can't Make It" continue in El Goodo's knack for beautiful beach harmonies, but opt for psych-breakouts and breakdowns reminiscent of efforts by Olivia Tremor Control and Lansic Dreiden. Coyote was produced by the band in a deserted theater and has brought together Cian Ciaran of the Super Furry Animals' fame to mix the album, as well as renowned artist Pete Fowler to capture the eloquence of the music for the album's artwork. Coyote is a beautiful piece of darkly rich psych-pop perfection, brought to you by the new breed of Welsh pop wizards–El Goodo.-neufutur.com

[2007] All the Lost Souls - James Blunt [Mp3 Download]

Posted: 02 Feb 2009 12:49 AM PST

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine @ allmusic.com
For as big a hit as it was, "You're Beautiful" wasn't necessarily representative of what kind of a singer/songwriter James Blunt is. It wasn't necessarily inaccurate, but it was misleading, suggesting that all this tremulously tuneful singer/songwriter wants to do is be sensitive -- that he aimed himself squarely at the middle of the road, crafting gentle music for housewives. That's not quite the case, as his 2007 sophomore effort, All the Lost Souls, makes plain. Surely, Blunt is wholly mainstream, a slicker, spirited variation on David Gray's elegantly upscale folk-pop, but he's not crassly commercial, deciding to disregard the path toward stultifying adult contemporary -- a path that "You're Beautiful" certainly pointed toward -- but he's also choosing to not write happy, harmless pop like Daniel Powter, still dwelling on moody, introspective midtempos. In other words, he still adheres to the Gray template the second time around, but he opens things up slightly with some spacey textures reminiscent of Coldplay and a heavy dose of classic popcraft, learned equally from Elton John, David Bowie, and Paul McCartney. Oddly, the sum total of these influences turns Blunt into the heir to that forgotten strain of wimpy, wispy songwriter-driven British pop of the '70s embodied by such once-stars as Al Stewart, Leo Sayer, and Gilbert O'Sullivan. The ghost of Gilbert echoes throughout "One of the Brightest Stars," and while this allusion is quite likely inadvertent, it also doesn't seem to be a coincidence that the opening song (and first single) on All the Lost Souls is a song that celebrates "1973," because much of this album feels like it could have been recorded and released during that mid-'70s heyday of sensitive pop. The main difference is not the clean, modern production with its slight digital flourishes -- things that push the rhythms forward on "Give Me Some Love," one of the livelier moments here -- but that Blunt isn't some quivering bedsit bard; he's the babe who enthusiastically shed his clothes in the "You're Beautiful" video, somebody whose confidence infuses his brokenhearted laments and makes them feel not quite so melancholy. This makes All the Lost Souls soothing, not haunting, and it also removes many of the quirks that distinguished '70s albums by McCartney, O'Sullivan, Sayer, and Elton, so this won't quite seduce that kind of pop fan (although this may hold more interest for them than they might initially think), nor will it win over anybody who can't quite get past the garbled, strangled soul affections of his voice, which remains his greatest liability -- but it will seduce anybody already won over by his 2005 debut, Back to Bedlam, since it's a tighter, more assured record than that. But chances are, they were seduced by Blunt already.

Pen Expers was formed in Gothenburg/Sweden in 2004 by newly-met friends Alexander Arvman and Mikael Romanenko. The quintet as it stands today took shape in the spring of 2007. Ever since, the band has built upon it's reputation of an aggressivly charming force of a rock band on stages across the country (and beyond as well).

With a mixture of influences from bands such as Joy Division, The Birthday Party and Crime & The City Solution, they're serving up a set of short, sharp and punchy alternative modern rock tracks with an addictive and catchy pop element thrown in.

The debut album "Bring on the heartache" was released on CD through Fold4 Records in February 2007. The album generated a handful of festival gigs (such as Peace & Love, Storsjöyran, Siesta) the following summer, with which the band caused as much of applause as of confusion. As of spring 2008, the band is about to release their follow-up, Baby's Gone Straight, via I-Ration Records.

What Volcano! have achieved, in simple terms, is to create
the most forward-looking, genre-eschewing, sense-battering
album Ive honestly ever heard* // Drowned In Sound on
Beautiful Seizure 10/10

Arriving in 2005 with an exclamatory bang, sporting an
electrifying live set and an audacious debut album in
"Beautiful Seizure" (voted #2 album of 2006 by Drowned In
Sound's readers), Volcano! cast an eye over the parameters of
rock and exponentially expanded them into hitherto unknown
regions. After a two-year hiatus, the Chicago trio now stride
onwards with a new bounce in their step, and a new cohesive
flow to their songs.

We wanted to be more economical and concise than before, and
more importantly to elicit a more intuitive body reaction,*
says Aaron With (guitar, vocals) of the songs on Paperwork.
We wrote stuff that we thought would be the most fun to play,
and the most fun to listen to, still trying to maintain a
balance of melody and noise.*

Accompanied by former high school classmate Sam Scranton
(drums, percussion), and college bandmate Mark Cartwright
(electronics, bass), the band was initially drawn together by
a shared love of musics outer edges: free-jazz, electronic
music, experimental rock. Everything about the new album is
leaner and more considered than before, often beginning with
simple pop structures and tearing them apart. The ragged,
feverish dissonance and bright spaciousness of Aaron's guitar
has much in common with peers like Deerhoof or Dirty
Projectors, with more attention placed on the beats and
rhythms this time.

"Our new album is called Oceans Will Rise, and it will be released on August 19th on Arts&Crafts," say the Montreal band.

"It is about the world we have seen and been through in the past several years, and all the beautiful, painful, wasted, joyful, smeared-sky, sick blissful wandering it has led us on, on the trail of some prey, on the brink of something huge, tiny and helpless, all you can feel is the whole universe shaking to its limit just that tiny bit more every split-split trillisecond, you can almost hear it happening in tiny detail if you hold your breath in long enough, little cracks and ancient-glacier-ice-whining."

Three tracks from 'Oceans Will Rise' have also appeared on Myspace for streaming, one of which is a single: "Being Here will be the first single from the album, with an accompanying video, to be fully released later in June. We hope you enjoy these."-angryape

photos by tony west

from september 29th to october 7th, via the use of many unemployed hours, and the combination of an unclaimed magnus chord organ and an unclaimed bedroom, both in the house whose couch i sleep upon, i recorded a new cover song every day. they are here presented in chronological order to represent those 9 ridiculous days. the idea was to record one a day for thirty days, but on the 10th day, drained of all creativity, imagination, and interesting ideas, i drank a bottle of wine whilst stumbling through an uninspired rendition of At Night's "Catch The Moon" in the bathroom and realized the recording was a mess, and an obvious indication that i could no longer force myself into such prolific production. well, i could, but it would stop being good.
so i took a break, focused on writing, played a few shows, and a couple months later started working on "don't let me down". that one took me a lot more than a day--i couldn't figure out how the 5/4 part in the bridge came in/went out for weeks. i was making it a lot more complicated than it had to be, but it took the musical competency of my dad to help me see that. seriously, the guy's a pro.
i think it was (is) a good project, and i've learned a lot. it is beneficial to force yourself to work even when you're not feeling "inspired", but only to a point. when you pass that point, you make crap. also: i work well in one day increments.

i'm going to continue to do covers, and have already started working on volume two, but i also need to record/finish writing the next record of original sarcastic dharma society stuff, and i want to do some recording/production for some other people, and i want to get a live band together, so we'll see about all that.

much love,
-mat

Emerald Eyes is a startlingly strong debut statement, and showcases the group's diverse abilities as they both sing and play every keyboard strain, xylophone plink and drum machine thump. The music has been compared to Julee Cruise, the aforementioned High Places and the most mythically dark and mysterious 4AD acts such as This Mortal Coil. It is Fight Bite's tendency to balance the ominous qualities of these acts with classic pop songwriting that makes them unique.
