Heartless Bastards, Tour Stop: Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ 2/4

Posted: 03 Feb 2009 12:53 PM CST

It’s become increasingly rare for me to get off the couch on Wednesday nights for anything non-”Top Chef” related, but the Heartless Bastards make couchin’ it damn near impossible!

First there were the critically acclaimed Stairs and Elevators (2005) and All This Time (2006), and now third time’s a charm with their upcoming The Mountain (available today through Fat Possum Records).  Often compared to fellow Ohians and labelmates The Black Keys and having toured with the likes of Wilco and Lucinda Williams, these garage rockers are brilliant at crafting adventurous songs that are simple in their complexity and fall somewhere between where garage rock meets bluesy rock.

Personally, I think their best instrument is lead singer Erika Wennerstrom.  Her voice is transcendent, enormous, and commands the most attention.  But hey, you don’t have to take my word for it: Rolling Stone said, “she [Wennerstrom] sounds like she's wailing on the shoulders of giants; her sad and angry vocals channeling all the swagger and spit of a young Robert Plant.” I’m fairly certain any female musician worth their salt in rock n’ roll today could die proudly after such an accolade.  As for the rest of us?  We will live and seethe with envy!

So what are you doing on Wednesday, February 4th?  Nothing worthwhile, I’m sure, so come to Maxwell’s in Hoboken and hang out with the Heartless Bastards.  If not for them, then for me.  I got a new haircut and I promise it’s worth the trek out here.

Lights Resolve @ Highline Ballroom, NYC

Posted: 03 Feb 2009 09:11 AM CST

As the bustle of 20 somethings pour into the somewhat crowded and dimly lit hallway, the sounds of the opening act slowly begin to waft in. With a line around the block, latent with teenage angst and an assortment green hair and body jewelry, we know we have come to the right place. The buzz of excitement mounts as the stage is cleared and Lights Resolve finally plugs in.

The energy is immediate, without missing a beat, the band begins with an upbeat, poppy number and the crowd reciprocates in full force. Moving seamlessly from tunes like "The Hills and Michael Jackson" to slower moodier tunes such as in "Another five days", this is clearly not their first rodeo.

While maintaining a level of professionalism and fun, the balance of up and down seems to be this band’s strong suit. The drums reflect the mood of each song, but never overwhelm the lead vocalist, (who presents a very solid front in his own right). Especially apparent, however, was the sincerity and emotion of Luke Daniels, whose genuine nature, and beaming spirit really brought it all together on stage. As threesomes go, these boys certainly held their own.

When asked backstage what excited them the most about what they were doing, Daniels replied, "Just being on stage, feeling the music. It really isn’t like anything else."

In a genre overwhelmed by whiny boy bands, who more often then not, haven’t developed the chops to go with the haircuts, it is so refreshing to hear a band play strong, and still have fun.

Lights Resolve is definitely a show worth catching.
