I’ve never really been a Groove Armada fan, mainly because I’ve never given them a fair listen. However, the other day I listened to these two remixes of Groove Armada’s new track “Drop The Tough” and I loved them and just had to share them — which is why this post is slightly shorter than usual, since there are only two remixes of this song. The funny thing is, I haven’t even heard the original track. It’s impossible to find. Groove Armada paired up with Bacardi on their B-Live project to share/distribute their new EP, Drop The Tough. You sign up, one track is unlocked and to unlock the others you have to share tracks. That’s too much of an effort, so who knows what the original sounds like, but the remixes byThe Twelves and Van She Tech (both currently two of the best remix groups around) are spreading across the blogosphere like wildfire.
Groove Armada - Drop The Tough (The Twelves Remix)
I think what makes this track (in both remixes) is the vocals, which are sung by Sister Saviour of The RGBs. Her voice sounds young but full of edge and attitude. And she has a wide range in vocal skill, from a light rapping, to punked up singing to a smooth and silky melody. Musically, this is a pure disco track. The beats are heavy and the guitar riff is full of funk. A very enjoyable aspect is the stuttering of the vocals that come in towards the end of the song that matches nicely with the understated percussion.

Groove Armada - Drop The Tough (Van She Tech)
This mix takes a little while to get into the core, over a minute actually, but when it does it becomes a proper Van She Tech effort. And it hits hard. Again, the vocals are the same, but when compared to the Twelves’ mix, the music is faster, choppier and more techy. Towards the end it’s a pretty amazing mix with heavy, I say heavy, club beats and a sound that just speeds through with splashes of all sorts thrown in for a very Euro sounding dance track.

On May 19, 2009 Iron and Wine will issue Around the Well on long time label Sub Pop, a 2-CD/3-LP collection of rare tracks ranging from out-of-print to never-before-released.
In support of Around the Well, Iron and Wine will be performing ten intimate shows in five cities. Tickets go on sale February 20th. Each individual show will be wholly unique, as Iron and Wine will turn the set list over to the fans to create. Beginning March 6th and running through March 30th at www.ironandwine.com, fans can vote by city and night for the songs they'd like to see performed each evening. For those who can't attend, the shows will be made available after the tour is completed, in some cases days after, on Iron and Wine's official live recording site Played Last Night, www.playedlastnight.com.
In addition, Iron and Wine have begun work on the follow-up to The Shepherd's Dog and plan to release a new album in spring, 2010.
The tracks collected on Around the Well span from Iron and Wine's earliest sessions which yielded the band's debut (2002's The Creek Drank the Cradle) through material recorded for 2007's The Shepherd's Dog. The double-disc collection is broken up into two sections. The first half is an assortment of hushed home recordings, unedited and raw, and the second highlights moments captured in the confines of proper studios with the help of other musicians, friends and engineers.
The album's title comes from a line in the song "The Trapeze Swinger", a fan favorite which was written for and included in the movie In Good Company. Three more songs written and recorded for the film finally make their appearance here as well: "Belated Promise Ring", "God Made the Automobile" and "Homeward, These Shoes". Around the Well also brings together hard to find covers such as The Flaming Lips' "Waitin' for a Superman" and New Order's "Love Vigilantes", along with one of Iron and Wine's earliest originals, "Sacred Vision".
