As If One New U2 Album Wasn’t Enough… Posted: 04 Mar 2009 01:26 PM PST U2 disappear off the face of the planet, well apart from those do-gooding bouts of guilt-tripping us ordinary folk that Bono seems to think are a good idea every now and then, for five years. Which was good of them. But now, not content with releasing one terrible album, U2 are planning on releasing another. Which will probably be just as terrible as No Line On The Horizon. The new album will be called Songs Of Ascent and is due for release before the end of 2009. Songs Of Ascent is being billed as a sister release or companion album to No Line On The Horizon. Which probably means that if you like the latter, you’ll love the former. As anyone who read my review will know, I hate No Line On The Horizon so I’ll probably give the next one a miss. Bono told Rolling Stone magazine:
It might be intended to be like Miles Davis or John Coltrane but I doubt it’ll hit the spot in quite the way those two do. Or maybe I’m unfair. Just because No Line On The Horizon is rubbish doesn’t mean this album will be. It does seem bizarre to release nothing for five years and then two albums in the space of a few months. Maybe U2 are trying to get some of the money back they’ve spent on promotion this time around because they have been absolutely everywhere in the last few weeks. There could be a simpler explanation, that after completing No Line On The Horizon, the group had loads of new material left over. Et voila, Songs Of Ascent is born. So, expect tracks that weren’t good enough to make the cut the first time around. I can’t wait.
