The Saturdays - ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ Video Review | Comic Relief Hits New Low

Posted: 14 Mar 2009 11:43 AM PDT

Get five attractive girls together, actually, three attractive ones and two that are a little ropey looking but that can actually sing. Put them in, well, not very much clothing. Have them cover a classic song and stick a cheesy pop beat underneath it and et voila, you have a guaranteed hit on your hands.

A guaranteed hit, but not a guaranteed number one, or so it would seem. The Saturdays are basically a Girls Aloud tribute act. Maybe the record company suspects they’re bound to split up soon, or maybe they’re a little old to appeal to teeny boppers anymore. Either way, The Saturdays have stolen their act.

The Saturdays were chosen to release the charity single for this year’s Comic Relief, which was held last night. As is traditional, the single is a cover, this time of Depeche Mode’s Just Can’t Get Enough. Now with all new Stock, Aitken, and Waterman-style backing track.

To be fair, Just Can’t Get Enough was always a cheese-encrusted pop song. But while Depeche Mode managed to pull it off, The Saturdays haven’t, mainly because they added layers of cheese and then sprinkled some sugar on the top.

What we end up with is an instantly-forgettable pop tune that will only appeal to girls under the age of 12-year-old. Which is probably why it was beaten in the UK charts by Flo Rida with Right Round. Almost unheard of for a big charity record.

The video is only loosely connected with Comic Relief, with the red nose skits looking like an afterthought. Anyone would think The Saturdays had already recorded this and then Comic Relief jumped on board after the event. Hmm.

That may also explain how inappropriate the video seems to be for a charity raising money for starving children in Africa. The Saturdays dressed like hookers? Sounds perfect to me. Truly bizarre and truly awful.
