Kelly Clarkson Visits GMA, Regis and Kelly

Posted: 11 Mar 2009 12:26 AM PDT

Kelly Clarkson was on Good Morning America and Live with Regis and Kelly yesterday morning (photo below is of her arriving at the latter) where she promoted the release of her new album All I Ever Wanted and performed "My Life Would Suck Without You."

I think she sounded amazing.  Listen to this and tell me what you think!

American Idol 8 Alexis Grace “Dirty Diana”

Posted: 10 Mar 2009 08:02 PM PDT

I was absolutely stunned to learn that Alexis Grace chose to sing "Dirty Diana" but, in the end, I think it was a decent song choice.  She was able to adapt it to a female voice and turned it into a sassy little number.  alexis grace

How short were those shorts!?  Both Kara and Paula liked it, though Paula warned her not to oversing but Simon kept it real by telling her that it might not have been as good as she thought.

American Idol 8 Matt Giraud “Human Nature”

Posted: 10 Mar 2009 07:57 PM PDT

Matt Giraud chose to sing one of my favorite Michael Jackson songs "Human Nature" and I'm not sure it went as well as Matt would have liked.

matt giraud

The falsetto was a little bit all over the place which is too bad because that is the best part of the song.  I like Matt but I was really on the fence with this one.  The judges all liked it which is really good considering the fact that he came after Adam who the judges were practically drooling over.

American Idol 8 Adam Lambert “Black or White”

Posted: 10 Mar 2009 07:51 PM PDT

Wow… I was really hoping that no one would pick "Black or White" so I cringed when Adam Lambert started singing it.  I really, really, really hated it.  I'm sorry Adam fans.

adam lambert

This doesn't mean I hate him because he really gave a great performance but I did not love what he did with this song.  That being said, I have to agree with Simon when he said that you have to go "over-the-top" to make it work with Michael Jackson songs.

American Idol 8 Megan Joy “Rockin’ Robin”

Posted: 10 Mar 2009 07:45 PM PDT

I don't know whether I liked the fact that Megan Joy chose to sing "Rockin' Robin" but she did show a different side of her personality which I did like.  She definitely proved that she can sing and has her own signature style which is important in an artist.

megan joy

Simon actually said it was a "stupid song choice" and that the dancing was ridiculous.  He then turned around and asked what Chef Gordon Ramsay, who was in the audience, thought of the performance.  We couldn't hear what he said but I'm guessing it wasn't what Simon was hoping for since he said that Gordon "doesn't know what he's talking about."  Ha ha!

American Idol 8 Jorge Nunez “Never Can Say Goodbye”

Posted: 10 Mar 2009 07:38 PM PDT

Jorge Nunez chose to sing "Never Can Say Goodbye" and I liked it but it was a bit boring and there were a couple little pitch problems.

Jorge Nunez

The truth is that Jorge is very entertaining and likeable so I hope he makes it through this week since the judges unanimously panned the performance and said it was a bad song choice.

American Idol 8 Anoop Desai “Beat It”

Posted: 10 Mar 2009 07:30 PM PDT

My daughter and I had a beat going about what Anoop Desai would sing and we literally screamed out loud with laughter when we heard him start singing "Beat It" because that's what we were afraid he was going to sing.  Anoop Desai

I love Anoop beyond words and I think this competition needs him but this song showed his vocal flaws.  Paula actually told him that it was a bad song choice and Simon said it was horrible and that it "actually looked a bit stupid."

American Idol 8 Allison Iraheta “Give It To Me”

Posted: 10 Mar 2009 07:25 PM PDT

Allison Iraheta chose the song "Give It To Me" and there's no way I would have picked that song for her.  It's dark and doesn't allow the crowd to really join in.

allison iraheta

On top of that, she seemed to struggle with the song towards the end since the key seemed to strain her voice a bit.  She has great stage presence, though, and I can see her doing well in the industry under the right management.

American Idol 8 Kris Allen “Remember the Time”

Posted: 10 Mar 2009 07:20 PM PDT

Kris Allen sang "Remember the Time" and, I've got to admit that I was not only surprised by the song choice but I was shocked that it wasn't as terrible as I had braced myself for.

kris allen

He had a sketchy note toward the end of the song but, overall, I thought it was a decent vocal performance.  The women in the audience were screaming like crazy (except for the part in his video package when he was shown with his wife – ha ha!).

Kara gave Kris props for, not only accompanying himself on the guitar, but for helping all of the other contestants prepare for Michael Jackson week.

American Idol 8 Jasmine Murray “I’ll Be There”

Posted: 10 Mar 2009 07:14 PM PDT

Jasmine Murray chose to sing "I'll Be There" which really didn't surprise me because she likes to pick those big songs that she's not quite ready for.

jasmine murray

I think she's a good singer and she has a lot of potential but she needs more time to mature as an artist and should stick to songs that are currently within her range.  Otherwise, she just looks like she's trying to be a bigger singer than she is.  Again, I'm not saying she's a bad singer, I'm just saying she might need a little more experience.  She looked great, though!

American Idol 8 Michael Sarver “You Are Not Alone”

Posted: 10 Mar 2009 07:09 PM PDT

Michael Sarver chose to sing "You Are Not Alone" and I felt the emotion behind the words (yeah, I got the warm and fuzzies) despite a the few imperfections I heard.

michael sarver

Yes, I will admit to being biased because I've liked him since the very beginning.  Simon said it best when he said that Michael isn't the best singer in the competition but he makes up for it with passion and heart.

American Idol 8 Danny Gokey “P.Y.T”

Posted: 10 Mar 2009 07:04 PM PDT

Danny Gokey sang "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" and it was a brilliant song choice (in my humble opinion) for a couple reasons.

danny gokey

It suits coarse voice more than some of the other smooth Michael Jackson songs but it's also energetic and people like to sing along to it.  Good choice, good job.

American Idol 8 Scott MacIntyre “Keep the Faith”

Posted: 10 Mar 2009 07:01 PM PDT

Scott MacIntyre chose to sing the obscure Michael Jackson song "Keep the Faith" and, even though I consider myself a MJ fan, I can't say that I've heard this song more than once.

scott macintyreThat said, Scott hasn't always picked the most obvious songs and it's worked for him so far.  He did a decent job and I was really impressed that he accompanied himself on the piano.  Incredible!  As Kara got him to point out, he only learned to play it this past week which is even more amazing.

American Idol 8 Lil Rounds “The Way You Make Me Feel”

Posted: 10 Mar 2009 05:35 PM PDT

Lil Rounds picked "The Way You Make Me Feel" for Michael Jackson Week and she did a really great job.

lil rounds

She was fun and full of energy and Randy, Kara and Paula loved her!  Simon thought it was a bit of a lazy performance.  I'm glad for Lil because I think it's really tough to be the first to sing on this first night of the finals.

Taylor Hicks “The Distance” In Stores Today!

Posted: 10 Mar 2009 09:00 AM PDT

Have you heard Taylor Hicks' new album The Distance yet?  This is the type taylorhicks_thedistance_coverof album that I think Taylor should have made a long time ago and I was really happy with it.  Unlike a lot of other albums today, this doesn't try to use gimmicks to be appealing.  Taylor's vocals are the focal point, as they should be, and you'll be treated to "real" instruments (gasp!).

It's hard for me to just pick one or two songs that I like.  Of course, the first single "What's Right is Right" is a good example of the tone of the whole album but I don't even think it's the best track.  I really liked "New Found Freedom" "The Distance" and "Maybe You Should" and songs like "Nineteen" might make you cry a little from the lyrics.

Overall, this is a great effort by Taylor and I'm confident that his fans (both new and old) will love this album.  Elliott Yamin fans will also be thrilled that the last track "Woman's Got to Have It" features a duet between Elliott and Taylor.  Pick it up today!

Happy 26th Birthday to Carrie Underwood!

Posted: 10 Mar 2009 08:48 AM PDT

Today, American Idol season 4 winner, Carrie Underwood, celebrates her 26th birthday.  I think she was just 21 when she auditioned for the show and so much has happened in her life since then.  I hope 2009 is a great year for her and that she gets all that she has hoped for!  Happy birthday, Carrie!

The country music superstar also covered Motley Crue's "Home Sweet Home," which will serve as the "goodbye" song on this season of American Idol.
