American Idol 8 Top 10 – Allison Iraheta “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone”

Posted: 25 Mar 2009 06:59 PM PDT

Allison Iraheta chose to sing "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" and I think it was the right song choice for her.  I really liked the performance and I think that Allison is very impressive for a 16-year-old singer.  I don't know if I was as enthusiastic as the judges but I do think it was a solid performance.

motown_week_allison_irahetaRandy said that it was blazing hot.  Kara said that America has to vote for Allison and that her voice was a gift from God.  Paula said that Allison is awesome, amazing and beautiful (with crayon on her face – why did she let Simon color on her face?).  Simon said that Allison is a survivor and that it was one of her best performances.

American Idol 8 Top 10 – Danny Gokey “Get Ready”

Posted: 25 Mar 2009 06:46 PM PDT

Danny Gokey chose to sing "Get Ready" and I feel like it might be too fast of a song for him to really let loose the way he likes to.  Still, it ended up being a relatively good, very energetic performance.  He even did a little Motown-style dancing with the backup singers.  Anyone notice how this baseline was modified from the original?  I loved that!

motown_week_danny_gokeyPaula said that she loves him and he gives a first-class performance every week.  Simon said that it was a clumsy and amateurish performance.  Randy said he loved the energy and feeling of it.  Kara said that it was good, not great, but that she is still a Danny fan.

American Idol 8 Top 10 – Adam Lambert “Tracks of My Tears”

Posted: 25 Mar 2009 06:37 PM PDT

Adam Lambert chose to soften up his image this week and sang "Tracks of My Tears" and I thought it was incredible.  He showed his versatility and I was able to really appreciate how beautiful his voice is.  I feel like he allowed himself to be vulnerable and it was amazingly refreshing.  Smokey Robinson himself (the writer and original singer) led the audience in a standing ovation.

motown_week_adam_lambertKara said he showed artistry and that it was one of the best performances of the night.  Paula said that he has the element of surprise and that she loves his cleaned up look.  Simon said it was THE best performance of the night.  He said that he is original and talented and has emerged as a star.  Randy said that it was unbelievably hot.

American Idol 8 Top 10 – Lil Rounds “Heatwave”

Posted: 25 Mar 2009 06:25 PM PDT

Lil Rounds chose to sing "Heatwave" and I have to give her some real props for going all out with her old-school Motown-inspired dress and hairstyle. While I love Lil's voice and think this was a decent song choice for her, I felt like she oversang it at times.  The last few bars of that song were sung at full tilt and I am not sure it was a great thing.

motown_week_lil_rounds

Randy said that the beginning of the song wasn't great and it wasn't the right kind of song for her.  He said uptempo songs may not be best suited to her vocal style.  Kara said that Lil looked great but it wasn't the right song.  She said it sounded like Lil was screaming at times.  Paula said she looked like a throwback to classic Motown but her vocals felt fresh.  Simon said her performance was an authentic tribute to Motown but that it was not the right song choice for her.

American Idol 8 Top 10 – Michael Sarver “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg”

Posted: 25 Mar 2009 06:14 PM PDT

Michael Sarver chose to sing "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" and I thought it was a pretty good song choice for him until he actually started singing.  I think he would have done a much better job if Smokey Robinson had let him just perform the song the way he wanted to without telling him to be more aggressive.

motown_week_michael_sarver

Paula said it was a tough performance because it felt a little "Las Vegas old lounge-y."  She said that some of the notes didn't work out for him.  Simon said he couldn't wait for it to end.  He said it just wasn't good enough.  Randy said that the song was a little too big for him.  Kara said that Michael needs to start showing them he's an artist instead of just a singer.

American Idol 8 Top 10 – Anoop Desai “Ooh Baby, Baby”

Posted: 25 Mar 2009 06:01 PM PDT

Anoop Desai chose to sing "Ooh Baby, Baby" and it must have been crazy singing it to the original artist/writer (Smokey Robinson, who was mentoring).  The performance was a little boring but the actual singing was quite good.  He needs to work on his showmanship.  I still really love Anoop and I'm happy that he's really starting to showcase his vocals in addition to just being a fun guy.

Kara said that it was a very hard song to sing, he did a good job and is showing people that he is really talented.  Paula said that she wants to see more confidence but his phrasing, delivery and falsetto is spot-on and sweet.  Simon said it was a great vocal but that Anoop looked half asleep during the performance.  Randy said that he wants to see the energy come back but with the good vocals.

American Idol 8 Top 10 – Megan Joy “For Once in My Life”

Posted: 25 Mar 2009 05:50 PM PDT

Megan Joy sang the Stevie Wonder classic "For Once in My Life" and mentor, Smokey Robinson, said that he believed she was one of the most original contestants American Idol has ever had on the show.  I think nerves got the best of her because her notes were all over the place.  I did not like the outfit or hair because when you combine it to the music, it looked like something from an episode of the Love Boat.

motown_week_megan_joy

Randy liked the outfit but the song was a train wreck for him.  He said it was too fast for her vocal style.  Kara agreed with Randy and suggested that Megan should have sung something like "My Guy."  Paula said that Megan looked stunning but she agreed that it was not the right song for her.  Simon said the good news is that Megan looked good but she should fire whomever is advising her.

American Idol 8 Top 10 – Scott MacIntyre “You Can’t Hurry Love”

Posted: 25 Mar 2009 05:37 PM PDT

Scott MacIntyre chose to sing "You Can't Hurry Love" which was originally recorded by the Supremes but remade by Phil Collins (and the Dixie Chicks for the Runaway Bride soundtrack – right?).  I thought the timing and phrasing was weird.  I thought there were pitch issues and I really did not love this performance.

motown_week_scott_macintyre

Paula said that when Scott is feeling a song, the audience feels it too.  Simon said that when he heard Scott sing "how much more can I take"… ha ha.  He said it was the wrong song and a bad performance.  Finally, someone is telling Scott the truth.  Randy agreed and said it was a hotel kind of performance.  They both said Scott was better than that.  Kara said that the song was a good choice but the execution was not perfect.

Funny moment – Simon was irritating Paula so she reached under her desk, grabbed crayons and a coloring book, gave them to him and said "here you go, six year old."  Ha ha!!!

American Idol 8 Top 10 – Kris Allen “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)”

Posted: 25 Mar 2009 05:25 PM PDT

Kris Allen chose to sing "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" which was originally recorded by Marvin Gaye and then by James Taylor. I have to confess that I like Kris more and more every week.  He's got great licks, I love that he plays the guitar and the arrangement tonight was fabulous!

motown_week_kris_allen

Kara said that she loved that he made his mark on that song and did everything right.  Paula said he picked a great song, his personality is infectious and the note at the end was great.  Simon said that it was smart of him to make his own version of the song but he needs to be more confident.  Randy said that Kris is very consistent and needs to stay in the zone.

American Idol 8 Top 10 – Matt Giraud “Let’s Get it On”

Posted: 25 Mar 2009 05:14 PM PDT

Matt Giraud decided to sing "Let's Get it On" by the legendary Marvin Gaye.  I am a big fan of Marvin Gaye's – I can remember the exact moment when I learned that he had been killed even though I was a small child.  Matt is a great singer and I think he sang it well but there was something missing from this performance for me.  He had some pitchy moments but it was more than that.

motown_week_matt_giraud

Randy said that Matt is challenging the other men in the competition for the top spot.  Kara said that there are a lot of girls out there saying "yeah… let's get it on."  Ha ha!  She said he could have pushed it more but it was a solid performance.  Paula said that he really showed a sexy, cool vibe and said that his riffs are tasteful and respectful of the original song.  Simon said it was a brilliant song choice, a cool performance and that Matt is one of the frontrunners in the competition.

Simon Cowell Wants President Obama on American Idol

Posted: 25 Mar 2009 09:24 AM PDT

After hearing that President Barack Obama mentioned his name during a recent appearance (the first sitting president to do so!) on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, American Idol judge, Simon Cowell, would like to have the commander-in-chief on the show.

17th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Award Viewing Party - Arrivals

Apparently, while talking to Absolute Radio, Simon said "we’re trying to get (Obama) to do a show at the moment… (The president) was on the ‘Tonight Show’ talking about how everyone in Washington is a critic. And then he said, ‘Unfortunately, they’re all like Simon Cowell.’ I’m not sure if it’s a compliment or not."

My guess is that it is NOT a compliment but Simon seemed to take it in stride and called the president "a really cool guy."

I don't know if Obama would take time out of his busy schedule to make an appearance on American Idol.  Maybe if it was for "Idol Gives Back" or something but I can't see it happening otherwise.  It would be cool, though.
