Murder City Devils @ Roseland Theater, Portland OR

‘ return to Portland was a hot and sweaty one. Anticipation had been growing since their last show here was canceled. Down near the stage, the bodies pushed forward and back with each song, and when the band launched into a fast one, the dancing grew spirited and rough. The crowd knew pretty much every word, singing along when not bobbing and bouncing into each other. The joyous mood made for a very friendly pit. [Question: when did the pit fill up with beards? Is that just a Portland thing?] murder-city-devils

had ditched their all black clothing for your typical indie rock attire — Spencer Moody was sporting a sweater and a Portland worthy beard — but hadn’t given up the theatrics. The songs still had all the over-the-top goth charm that made them fun to shout eight years ago. Judging from the band’s energy, and the way Moody and his scream stalked the stage, they seemed glad to be back to support the release of their new box set.

It’d been a couple years since I listened to anything more than my favorite tracks off In Name And Blood. Their set reminded me how much I liked shouting along to bad drinking decisions and murder. I don’t think I’ll be able to let their albums sit that long again.
