Off The Subject (But Not Really)Twitter Growing @ 1,382 Percent Posted: 16 Mar 2009 05:07 PM PDT Maybe it's Jimmy Fallon's integration of it into his new TV show, Shaq's use of it to interact in real-life with fans, or blog's ability to write about it non-stop, but one way or another, Twitter's growth just continues to explode. The latest numbers from Nielsen Online indicate that Twitter grew 1,382% year-over-year in February, registering a total of just more than 7 million unique visitors in the US for the month. Not only is that huge growth in one year, but in one month as well, as in January, Twitter.com clocked in with 4.5 million unique visitors in the US, meaning the service grew by more than 50 percent month-over-month. Elsewhere in the social networking space, Facebook continued to widen its lead on MySpace, with a total of 65.7 million unique visitors versus 54.1 million for its increasingly distant competitor. Meanwhile, the recently re-launched Bebo, which now plays in the social networking aggregation game, is showing some promise, growing 40 percent from last year to register a total of nearly 3.2 million US visitors in February. The competition that most are now focused on, however, is that between FacebookFacebook reviewsFacebook reviews and TwitterTwitter reviewsTwitter reviews. While Facebook remains several orders of magnitude bigger, its recent move to a real-time homepage and its overhaul of Facebook Pages is seen by many as a move to thwart Twitter's continued growth. It will be a few months until this shows up in the numbers and gives us some sort of indication as to whether or not that strategy is working, but for now, both networking sites are enjoying tremendous growth. |

Tupacs Mother Files $10 Million Dollar Lawsuit Against Film Company Posted: 16 Mar 2009 12:17 PM PDT Afeni Shakur, the mother of late rapper Tupac Shakur, will be filing a $10 million countersuit against film production company Morgan Creek today (March 16). As reported earlier, Morgan Creek filed a lawsuit against Afeni and Amaru Entertainment claiming that they backed out of an agreement to sell Tupac's life rights for a film adaptation. Afeni and Amaru Entertainment have denied Morgan Creek's accusations and according to The Hollywood Reporter, they will be filing their countersuit Monday morning. Afeni and Amaru claim that Morgan Creek's lawsuit is an attempt to force Afeni to hand over Tupac's movie rights. They also claim that Morgan Creek has sabotaged their attempts to negotiate with other film studios. "Instead of negotiating in good faith with (Amaru), they sought to obtain the rights by concocting a nonexistent 'agreement' and engaging in heavy-handed threats, coercion and intimidation to interfere with and ultimately destroy the film project," said Afeni and Amaru Entertainment in the countersuit. Aside from the $10 million, Afeni and Amaru Entertainment want the court to declare there was never a deal with Morgan Creek. Representatives for Morgan Creek declined to comment. |

L.A Graffiti Artist Charged With 29 Counts Of Vandalism Posted: 16 Mar 2009 11:12 AM PDT L.A. street artist Shepard Fairey is getting more attention - though not the kind he usually seeks - from Boston cops who are slapping more paper on the notorious graffiti artist. The BPD has charged Fairey with vandalizing 29 Hub properties, including parking meters and buildings, with stickers and posters of his world-famous, iconic Obama "Hope" image and his "Obey" tag. He plastered the Hub with his graffiti art to beef up his image in the street art subculture and promote a local art exhibit "at the expense of public and private property owners," Detective William Kelley wrote in a police report that lists all 29 locations, mostly in the Back Bay. Fairey, 39, denies illegally posting the Obama "Hope" image he designed or his tag, an image of Andre the Giant and the word "Obey." Yesterday, he sneered at the new charges, suggesting they are a badge of honor. "I can only assume that the gratuitous piling on of felony charges by the Boston Police is related to my long-standing advocacy as an ARTIST for the idea that public visual space should be filled with more than just commercial advertising," he said in an e-mail. Fairey was arrested on graffiti charges in February while on his way to his exhibit at the Institute of Contemporary Art, which is selling $20 tickets for a 10-mile bike ride to view Fairey's graffiti. He is also in a legal battle with The Associated Press over the "Hope" image, which the news organization said was based on an AP photo. Cleveland blogger and Fairey fan Jeff Buster, 60, who was visiting Boston yesterday, said Fairey's anti-corporate graffiti is no more offensive than billboards and ad blimps. "He makes us see our own vulnerabilities to corporate messages," said Buster, who wore a camera around his neck while waiting four hours for Fairey at his Brighton court appearance on a 2000 tagging case. |
Posted: 15 Mar 2009 06:34 PM PDT Dilla beats-and-treats are coming. Die-hard hip-hop heads should circle June 2 on their calendars. According to hip-hop Web site hiphopdx.com, it's the release date for a new posthumous record from the legendary Detroit hip-hop producer and rapper who recorded as J Dilla and Jay Dee. "Jay Stay Paid" will be released via label Nature Sounds. "J$P" is the new collection of beats and songs Jay Dee (James Dewitt Yancey) was reportedly working on during his final days in the hospital. He died in 2006 at age 32 from complications from a rare blood disease. More than three years after his death, Dilla's mother Maureen Yancey and long-time Dilla idol and New York hip-hop pioneer Pete Rock are ready to release the highly anticipated collection. Reportedly, the format of the album plays like a radio show with Rock acting as a radio DJ. While largely instrumental, "J$P" also features guest vocals from artists Black Thought of the Roots, (MF) DOOM, and M.O.P. |
