Graffiti Artist Styles Teaches Kids To Create Murals Posted: 22 Mar 2009 05:43 PM PDT Wigwam Creek Middle School students have created a different kind of graffiti for the walls of their campus. Working with Such Styles, a Tempe artist, 16 sixth- through eighth-graders used graffiti as a tool to promote school spirit and character. Last week, the students spray-painted the "six pillars of good character" and their mascot, a jaguar, as part of a class project about pop art. Art teacher Katie Oakley said she used graffiti as a way to teach her students the principals and concepts of art. Graffiti can be seen on everything from clothing to Barack Obama's presidential campaign. Artist, Shepard Fairey, created the iconic image of the red, white and blue "Hope" poster of Obama, but was also arrested in Boston for illegally tagging property with graffiti in February. The mural was dedicated to Terri Rohleder, a social studies teacher who died of breast cancer in November. Oakley said Rohleder helped bring the "six pillars of character" classes to campus. The pillars are trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. "As educators, we have a bigger responsibility than just teaching our subject area, and that is teaching people how to be a good citizen and how to have respect for each other and be caring," Oakley said. "We can't ignore the fact that we're with the kids eight hours of the day, and we want them to understand these things." In January, the school received a $1,500 Step into Arts Learning Grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts. Oakley said the money went toward the project's supplies, curriculum development and artist fees. All 16 students were part of the mural creation with Styles and his son, Champ Baez, outside their classroom in Litchfield Park. Styles, who has been a graffiti artist for more than 25 years, taught the students the basics of aerosol art. "My big thing is, I promote art though the use of aerosol rather than vandalism though the use of aerosol," the 39-year-old said. "The aerosol can is a portable airbrush, and it's an art tool." Oakley said teaching graffiti art is a way to connect with students about how art relates to them. "I do not promote graffiti as vandalism, but what I do promote is art through the use of the aerosol can, and so if we can do legitimate murals and we can put a positive message out there through this art form that is already naturally exciting to the kids, then I'm helping my community by teaching the kids how to do graffiti the right way," she said. Most students were eager to be part of the mural that will hang in the gym. "I'm most excited about showing that this is the kind of art I'm into and this is what I love," sixth-grader Ryan Fullerton said. "I've spent a lot of time doing it and there's a lot to it that people don't really see. Everyone should appreciate it more." |

Death Row Records Re Launches April 18 Without Suge Knight Posted: 22 Mar 2009 04:58 PM PDT The record label formerly known as Koch Records is mounting its reemergence on the music scene by helping to relaunch former West Coast powerhouse Death Row Records. The new Koch, now known as E1 Entertainment, is helping to re-launch Death Row with the release of new music on Record Store Day, which is a national event geared towards celebrating independent music and retailers on April 18. The unreleased Death Row music will comprise a three-track exclusive sampler that will be available in stores next month. Songs featured on the project include Crooked I's "Hoodstar," "Pay for the P***y" by Petey Pablo and "Do What You Do" from Danny Boy. The Death Row sampler will be the first of more new music that will surface from the label this fall, sources told AllHipHop.com, adding that 90 percent of what was recorded for Death Row has never been released. The Record Store Day promotion comes amid a crossroads for Death Row, which has sustained as many setbacks and milestones over the years. Since its creation in 1991, the label has produced classic albums and songs from artists such as Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Tupac Shakur, Tha Dogg Pound and The Lady of Rage. Death Row's heyday in the '90s ended with the arrival of the new millennium as the company sustained constant legal troubles to go with its highly publicized defection of artists. On January 15, WIDEawake Entertainment Group, Inc. purchased the label for $18 million. That same month, items found in the Death Row office after the company filed for bankruptcy were auctioned off to the public. Death Row is among a string of music labels and entertainment companies that have products distributed by E1, which is regarded as the largest independent record label in the United States. Artists aligned with E1 include rappers Jim Jones, Fat Joe, Trick Trick and Keith Murray. The Death Row Records unreleased music sampler is scheduled to arrive in stores on April 18. |
