Keane Concert Becomes First Domestic 3D Broadcast In The UK Thanks To Sky TV

Keane may not be the band they once were (maybe Tom Chaplin should get back on the sauce) but they have just made history. Their gig at the Abbey Road Studios on Thursday evening became the first event to be broadcast domestically in 3D.

3D has been with us for years - who can forget going to watch a movie and having to wear those stupid cardboard glasses - but it’s only now starting to be done properly. Many movies are now being made in 3D and the technology is on its way to television.

Sky is a British-based satellite television service which already offers a range of channels in high-definition and is now looking towards the future. With that in mind, the company has endeavored to be the first to broadcast in 3D.

While a full service won’t be available until at least Christmas, Sky has now sent a 3D broadcast over the airwaves and it chose a Keane concert to be the first transmission.

Keane played their set at the legendary Abbey Road Studios while an audience watched through a Sky TV box next door. The only new technology necessary was a Hyundai 3D television set… not even the red and green glasses were needed.

The gig was also shown live in a cinema and broadcast over the Web to fans in the know. Unfortunately, due to the very-2D nature of computer monitors, they did require the glasses.

T3, the gadget Web site, covered this story but called into question the validity of having Keane as the act featured. They stated that Sky should have had, “something hip, cool and cutting edge [...] shame about the dull act.

Any disgruntled Keane fans can leave comment on the T3 article. After Perfect Symmetry completely failed to set my aural taste buds alight I think I’ll let them get away with it this one time.
