Maximo Park - ‘The Kids Are Sick Again’ Music Video Review | Quicken The Heart

I’ve been a fan of Maximo Park since they released their debut album, A Certain Trigger, in 2005. Two years later they released their second album, Our Earthly Pleasures, which unlike their peers’ (The Futureheads and Bloc Party) efforts managed to live up to the promise of their first release.

Maximo Park are one of those bands who have a really intense and loyal following but don’t quite ever manage to move into the mainstream. But they have another chance to do exactly that with new album, Quicken The Heart.

The first single to be released from Quicken The Heart is The Kids Are Sick Again, a rousing little number that certainly signals the fact Maximo Park are back again. Video and review after the cut.

The Kids Are Sick Again is a great choice for first single. It is immediately recognizable as a Maximo Park record but also points towards an evolution in style. The best musicians are able to blend these two elements together, pleasing both old and new fans alike, and Maximo Park manage it superbly.

The trio of drums, bass, and guitar are strong as ever and it’s all gelled together with both lilting keyboards and lead singer Paul Smith’s almost poetic rant-style of singing. It may not have a hook as recognizable as Graffiti or Our Velocity but the second half of the song gives th reward promised by the first half.

The video is simple yet effective, combining footage of the band playing with very intentional splashes of color. It won’t win any awards but it’s a very good looking video which shows the band as they should be seen.

The Kids Are Sick Again is out on May 4 with the album, Quicken The Heart, to follow a week later on May 11.
