Amy Winehouse Gorillaz Collaboration Annoys Label - Where’s The New Album?

Amy Winehouse seems to be intent on delaying working on her new album until either one of two things happen: her record label get tired of waiting and cut her loose; we all forget who she is, what she sounds like, and the fact she even exists.

Most artists try to release new material every two years, although some, especially in the rap genre, tend to release an album every year. Amy Winehouse’s last record, Back To Black, which made her a household name around the world, was released in October, 2006 - two-and-a-half years ago.

Her record company knows it’s been too long and is desperate for her to hurry up and record the next album. There’s obviously some selfishness there because Universal knows it can make a load of money from it. But even I think Winehouse should get on with it.

Amy seems to have fallen in love with something other than Blake Fielder-Civil recently, spending all her time in St. Lucia. So her record company sent her back over there to lay down some tracks for the next album.

Unfortunately, according to The Mirror, instead of knuckling down to work with Salaam Remi, the record’s producer, she has been brainstorming with Damon Albarn about a possible collaboration between her and Gorillaz.

The usual inside source supposedly told the newspaper:

“They were not happy to say the least. They want Amy to get cracking on her new album, but the results have so far not been up to scratch.”

“Imagine how they felt when they realized she had agreed to work with Gorillaz? They couldn’t believe it. It’s an unnecessary distraction.”

“They think she should invest all her energy in her own music. She should be knuckling down and delivering the goods.”

The problem is that Winehouse has Universal Records over a barrel. Despite, or possibly even partly because of, her obvious and very public troubles, she’s hot property. If the record label decides to drop her for not toeing the line then she knows there’ll be others forming a queue to sign her up. And she’s clearly playing on that.

It’s a risky game though because as loyal as music fans are, most only have so much patience before they move on to the next big thing. If Winehouse continues to disrespect her fans by making them wait years for a new album their number will dwindle rapidly.

More worrying though is the news that Winehouse’s new material has a “distinctly reggae feel” about it. Oh God. Please no.
