Calvin Harris - ‘I’m Not Alone’ Video Review

Posted: 19 Apr 2009 07:18 PM PDT

Calvin Harris is the Scottish dance artist come record producer who doesn’t seem to be able to put a foot wrong. He burst onto the scene with Acceptable In The 80s and The Girls, joint hits which combined styles superbly.

After a couple of less-well received singles he took a break before coming back with Dance Wiv Me, a collaboration with Dizzee Rascal which he wrote and produced. It was a huge hit in the UK and once again mixed different genres; this time dance, grime, and R&B.

After another short break Calvin Harris is back, on his own again but no less successful for it. The single being reviewed today, I’m Not Alone, has already been out a few weeks and has spent two of those weeks at number one in the UK Singles Chart.

I’m Not Alone starts off well in both senses, the song and the video show real promise early on. Harris is singing, and sounding good, and the beginnings of a story seem to be being played out. And then it all goes horribly wrong.

The song descends into an old-school dance track which sounds identical to a hundred other dance tracks released between 1990 and the present day.In fact, it’s based on Try All You Want by Electronic, a song released in 1991.

There’s nothing overly original or brilliant here. It’s a repetitive and quickly-forgotten dance track with little holding it together. I’m sure it’ll sound great in a club but number one for two weeks? The question has to be why?

In the same way the video turns into another run-of-the-mill piece of dance fluff. Harris plays a Dr. Frankenstein character and conducts experiments on all manner of attractive women who, quite naturally, can’t stop dancing. Lame to say the least.

I said before that Calvin Harris doesn’t seem to be able to put a foot wrong and this proves it. I’m Not Alone is a lazy by-the-numbers dance record which a lot of people seem to love. I’m personally not sure why but the fact remains that they do. Weirdos.
