| American Idol 8 Anoop Desai “True Colors” Posted: 07 Apr 2009 08:11 PM PDT Anoop Desai was born on the same day as American Idol winner, David Cook, and he chose to sing the 1986 hit "True Colors." I am biased because this is one of those songs that I wish NO ONE would ever sing again on Idol. Anyway, Anoop did a great job. I really like his voice a lot. Randy said that it was a very nice, controlled vocal performance. Kara said that he would take a pop song and interpret it with soul. Paula said that the song choice was flawless and that his voice was truly magical. Simon said that it was very good (but not fantastic). Tags: anoop desai, True-Colors |
| American Idol 8 Danny Gokey “Stand By Me” Posted: 07 Apr 2009 06:54 PM PDT Danny Gokey was born in 1980 and chose to sing an updated version of "Stand By Me" from that year. I thought it was a very good choice for his voice and I liked the arrangement. I thought he did an excellent job. Randy said that he wasn't a big fan of the arrangement but that Danny is such a good singer that he made him love it anyway. Kara said that he made it a three level performance and he made it his own. Paula said that he set the bar really high for the rest of the contestants tonight. Simon said the beginning was good, the middle was lazy and the end was terrific so it ended up being a great performance. Tags: danny gokey, stand by me |
| American Idol 8 Kris Allen “All She Wants to Do is Dance” Posted: 07 Apr 2009 06:42 PM PDT Kris Allen chose to sing an 1985 song with which I am very familiar, "All She Wants To Do Is Dance" and it was pretty modernized. He really added a revamped baseline and, while it wasn't as extraordinary as his performances these past couple weeks, it was still pretty good. Kara said that she was happy he picked an uptempo number but felt that it sounded more like a music assignment than the youthful performance that he needed to deliver. Paula said that Kris is one of the most likable contestants ever. Simon said it was indulgent, boring and forgettable. He said that it was a stupid song choice. | American Idol 8 Lil Rounds “What’s Love Got To Do With It” Posted: 07 Apr 2009 06:42 PM PDT Lil Rounds was born in 1984 and she chose to sing Tina Turner's song "What's Love Got to Do With It?" I think it was a good song choice for her voice but I would have liked it better if she sang something that was a little more challenging although she did try to power through the middle and end of it. Paula said that Lil looks really hot tonight but said that she didn't make the song her own. Simon said that it was too much of a copycat performance and that it feels like they've lost her. Randy said that it seems like Lil is not listening to their advice. Kara said that Lil's lower range really suffers. Tags: lil rounds, top 8, what's love got to do with it |
| American Idol 8 Scott MacIntyre “The Search Is Over” Posted: 07 Apr 2009 06:42 PM PDT Scott MacIntyre was born in 1985 and he sang and this theme was perfect because I always have felt like Scott's voice was best suited for 80s ballads. He reminds me of Peter Cetera of the band Chicago, at times. Kara commended him for playing the guitar but said he had some off moments vocally. Paula applauded his effort to step away from the piano but said that some of the high notes sounded a little rough. Simon said that Scott should go back to the piano next week. | American Idol 8 Allison Iraheta “I Can’t Make You Love Me” Posted: 07 Apr 2009 06:40 PM PDT Allison Iraheta sang one of my favorite songs "I Can't Make You Love Me" and I was surprised with the song choice, to be honest. She really did give a beautiful performance and I was impressed with the emotion she put into it considering the lyrics probably refer to a situation that she's never encountered since the girl was only born in 1992! Paula said that she loved the tenderness that she put into that song. Simon thought it was really good and said that they need to make Allison more likable. Randy said that Allison reminds her so much of Kelly Clarkson but agreed with Simon. Kara said that it took real talent to take such an adult song and make it young. | American Idol 8 Matt Giraud “Part-time Lover” Posted: 07 Apr 2009 06:39 PM PDT Matt Giraud was born in 1985 and he chose to sing "Part-time Lover." I didn't even recognize it at first because he changed the arrangement so much. I would have taken it up by a half-note if I had been him since the lower register was not very strong and he didn't even take on most of the higher notes. I actually didn't love this performance. Randy said that it was vocally one of the best of the night. Kara said it was incredible on every level. Paula said it deserved a standing ovation. | American Idol 8 Adam Lambert “Mad World” Posted: 07 Apr 2009 06:39 PM PDT Adam Lambert was born in 1982 sang another of my favorite songs "Mad World" and I think it was perfect choice for him. I was sitting on the edge of my seat near tears because I believed that performance so much. It was incredible. He paid attention to every detail from his hair swept to one side to the blue lighting and the amazing control he had. Flawless. Simon spoke for all of the judges (partly because time was running out) but he got up on his feet and gave Adam a standing ovation. Tags: adam lambert, mad world |
| Megan Joy Performs on Regis and Kelly Posted: 07 Apr 2009 09:56 AM PDT Megan Joy sang "Walkin' After Midnight" on Live! With Regis and Kelly and I was really glad that she sang that instead of "Turn Your Lights Down Low." Anyway, I loved her natural look even though I'm not sure it was a better performance of the song than on Idol. Of course, Regis and Kelly asked her about the controversy surrounding the comments she and judge, Simon Cowell, exchanged. After explaining it for the millionth time, she obliged their request to show them her very tattooed arm. Kelly had a little joke planned for it. Watch the segment now: |
