Idol Stalker - Watching American Idol

American Idol Season 8 Top 7 Recap

Posted: 14 Apr 2009 06:09 PM PDT

Tonight, the Top 7 performed on American Idol and at the top of the show, host Ryan Seacrest announced that, because the show has a tendency to run long, contestants will only get feedback from two of the four judges.  If anyone wants to argue against the addition of the fourth judge, now is the time.  I kind of feel sorry for Kara DioGuardi.american idol 8 top 7

Filmmaker, Quentin Tarantino, is serving at the celebrity coach/mentor this week and it's his second appearance on the show.  Back during Season 3 he actually was a guest judge.

Allison Iraheta was the first to perform and she sang "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing."  She received feedback from Paula and Simon who both liked it.

Anoop Desai sang "Everything I Do (I Do It For You)" and I knew, for some reason, that he would eventually sing that song.  It actually was a good performance and Kara and Randy liked it.

Adam Lambert sang "Born to Be Wild" and I liked it but I didn't love it as much as his performances from the past few weeks.  It felt like a Broadway number and Simon seemed to agree with me.  Paula (and the audience) were freaking out, though.

Matt Giraud sang "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?" and I was optimistic at first but then the performance derailed.  Randy didn't particularly love it and I didn't get to hear what Kara said because I was too distracted by Simon's weird behavior behind her.

Danny Gokey chose to sing "Endless Love" and I'm sure everyone was thinking about how difficult the song was for him to sing, considering the recent death of his wife.  Paula liked it and so did Simon but he said that he was disappointed in the arrangement.

Kris Allen sang "Falling Slowly" and it was a beautiful, heartfelt performance even though it wasn't vocally perfect.  Randy didn't particularly like it but Kara said that it was one of his best moments.

Lil Rounds sang "The Rose" and I would not have chosen that song for her but she defended the selection when Simon told her that he didn't like it.  Paula seemed to like it but I didn't understand what she said.

American Idol 8 Top 7 Lil Rounds “The Rose”

Posted: 14 Apr 2009 06:02 PM PDT

Lil Rounds sang "The Rose" and I really was surprised that she picked the song.  She began the performance with an arrangement that is similar to the original but then she finished the song with more of a gospel feel to it.

Paula said something that I really didn't understand.  Simon said that the song was too soft, too middle of the road and that there were nice moments but she is not the artist that they met weeks ago.

American Idol 8 Top 7 Kris Allen “Falling Slowly”

Kris Allen chose to sing "Falling Slowly" and it was not vocally perfect but it was so emotionally stirring.  I was completely captivated and I really didn't care about the little imperfections.American Idol 8 Top 7 Kris Allen

Randy said that it never quite caught on for him and that it was pitchy from note one.  Kara said that it was one of Kris' best moments and I couldn't agree more.

American Idol 8 Top 7 Danny Gokey “Endless Love”

Posted: 14 Apr 2009 05:45 PM PDT

Danny Gokey chose to sing "Endless Love" which I'm sure must have a difficult performance.  I'm sure his mind was on his wife, who tragically passed away less than a year ago.

Paula said that he's unique and unforgettable and that it was a beautiful rendition.  Simon said that he was disappointed that he chose to do such a traditional arrangement of the song.

American Idol 8 Top 7 Matt Giraud “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?”

Posted: 14 Apr 2009 05:37 PM PDT

Matt Giraud chose one of my very favorite love songs from the Don Juan DeMarco soundtrack and, I'm sorry, but I think he ruined it.  The beginning was really nice and I thought it was going to go well but then he just overdid it and I hated it.American Idol 8 Top 7 Matt Giraud

Randy said the performance was interesting – it started out well but then it went wrong during the bridge.  Kara was providing commentary but I was too distracted by what Simon was doing behind her to pay attention.  Did anyone see the weird (possibly obscene) mouth gestures he was making?!?

American Idol 8 Top 7 Adam Lambert “Born to Be Wild”

Posted: 14 Apr 2009 05:26 PM PDT

Adam Lambert chose to sing "Born to Be Wild" and I didn't like it as much as his performances in the past few weeks.  Still, it was pretty outrageous and the audience was freaking out.  It felt like a number from a Broadway musical to me but I guess that could be his past in the theater coming out.

Paula was on her feet told him that he dares to dance in the path of greatness and that he's one of the bravest contestants she's ever witnessed.  Simon said it was vocally incredible but that it was a bit like watching the Rocky Horror Picture Show (he agreed with me!).

American Idol 8 Top 7 Anoop Desai “Everything I Do (I Do it For You)”

Posted: 14 Apr 2009 05:20 PM PDT

I don't know why but I knew that Anoop Desai was going to sing "Everything I Do (I Do It For You)" from the Robin Hood Prince of Thieves soundtrack.  I actually really loved the performance.

AMERICAN IDOL: Anoop Desai performs in front of the judges on AMERICAN IDOL airing Tuesday, April 14 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. CR: Frank Micelotta / FOX.

Randy thought it was going to be a really rough performance but that Anoop rocked the house and that it was in tune and emotional.  Kara said that Anoop has found his place and that it was one of his best performance.

American Idol 8 Top 7 Allison Iraheta “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”

Posted: 14 Apr 2009 05:12 PM PDT

Allison Iraheta chose to sing "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" and I'm not sure I would have picked that song for her but she did a reasonably good job.  I didn't feel the emotion from her that I did last week with "I Can't Make You Love Me" but she's obviously a great performer.

AMERICAN IDOL: Allison Iraheta performs in front of the judges on AMERICAN IDOL airing Tuesday, April 14 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. CR: Frank Micelotta / FOX.Paula said that Allison is authentic and is a vocal champion.  Simon said that she is the only hope left for a girl to win the competition and that she's getting more confident.

Demi Lovato to Tour with David Archuleta

Posted: 14 Apr 2009 08:53 AM PDT

Disney star, Demi Lovato, will be going on tour with American Idol season 7 demi lovato don't forget runner-up, David Archuleta and I think this was a great pairing, considering the demographics of Archie fans.

Demi became popular after appearing in Camp Rock with the Jonas Brothers.  She released the deluxe version of her Don't Forget album on March 31, 2009 which features her single "Get Back."  I'm not a huge fan of her music but I can see how a show with David and Demi could be a lot of fun for Disney fans.

Castro Signs with Atlantic, Writing with DioGuardi

Posted: 14 Apr 2009 08:37 AM PDT

American Idol season 7 finalist, Jason Castro, has been signed by Atlantic Records and I'm really interested to see what his album will sound like.  I never thought that Jason should win the competition but I did think he deserved to be there because he is talented and unique (and pretty cute!).  He's been working with some songwriting heavyweights including Idol judge Kara DioGuardi, Martin Terefe (Jason Mraz, KT Tunstall), Sacha Skarbek (James Blunt, Jason Mraz), Guy Chambers (Robbie Williams) and Jason Reeves (Colbie Caillat).

Kara put this video up late last week of her working in the studio with Jason and John Fields (the man behind the Jonas Brothers, we'll see if that's a good thing!).  I think it's cool because you can hear a snippet of one of the songs they are working on in the background towards the beginning of the clip.  Check it out.
