American Idol 8 Top 7 Anoop Desai “Dim All the Lights” Posted: 21 Apr 2009 05:59 PM PDT Anoop Desai, sporting a brand new dusting of facial hair, chose to sing "Dim All The Lights" and I think it was his weakest performance this year. I love Anoop and I think he's got a good voice but this just did not work for me. Randy said that he didn't love the arrangement but said that Anoop can really sing. Kara said that it sounded like it could be on the radio and that the last two weeks have been his best performances. Paula said he looked fantastic and that his vocals were magical. Simon said that it was mediocre at best and that it was a horrible version of the song. Tags: anoop desai, disco week |
American Idol 8 Top 7 Matt Giraud “Stayin Alive” Posted: 21 Apr 2009 05:50 PM PDT Matt Giraud chose to sing "Stayin Alive" and the arrangement varied from sounding like a 90s hip hop song to some 70s funk. I did not love it. In fact, I'm not sure I even liked it. It will be interesting to see what happens with Matt during the results show. Randy said that he didn't like the song choice or the arrangement but Matt can really sing. Kara said that he brought the disco feel back to Disco Week and that Matt gave a solid performance. Paula said that this week, Matt saved his own life on the show. Simon didn't like the performance because it came across as a little bit desperate. Tags: disco week, matt giraud, staying alive |
American Idol 8 Top 7 Adam Lambert “If I Can’t Have You” Posted: 21 Apr 2009 05:42 PM PDT Adam Lambert chose to sing "If I Can't Have You" from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. It surprised me because I was expecting him to go all out for Disco Week. Weren't you expecting him to be bouncing all over the stage? I love the lack of predictability! Randy said that Adam is ready right now and that he has it majorly going on. Kara said that Adam was brilliant. Paula said that Adam chose to take a disco song and not make it cliche. Simon said Adam did something that no one was expecting, it was original and the vocals were immaculate. Tags: adam lambert, disco week, if I can't have you, saturday night fever soundtrack |
American Idol 8 Top 7 Allison Iraheta “Hot Stuff” Posted: 21 Apr 2009 05:32 PM PDT Allison Iraheta put her own spin on "Hot Stuff" and I think it was decent considering the fact that Disco Week doesn't go too well with her style. She definitely put a lot of effort into her performance this week. Randy said that he didn't love the arrangement because it was a little overindulgent but that Allison is one of the best singers in the competition. Kara said that she picked the right song but the arrangement was not great even though the singing was excellent. Paula said that Allison doesn't compromise, is authentic and hit the last note off the chart. Simon said that all things considered it was a brilliant performance. American Idol 8 Top 7 Danny Gokey “September” Posted: 21 Apr 2009 05:27 PM PDT Danny Gokey chose to sing "September" and I think it was a decent song choice and he definitely can sing but it did lack originality. I think that if he's going to continue to do well in this competition, he's going to have to get more creative. Randy said that he turned the song into something that works for him. Kara said she was worried about what he would do for Disco Week but said that his pitch is so right on. Paula said that Danny has one of the sexiest voices she's ever heard. Simon said it was not a star-worthy performance because it was good but not special. Tags: danny gokey, disco week, september |
American Idol 8 Top 7 Kris Allen “She Works Hard for the Money” Posted: 21 Apr 2009 05:18 PM PDT Kris Allen surprised me by choosing "She Works Hard for the Money" but his options were really limited considering it was Disco Week. I loved the arrangement he came up with. I loved how the bass came in a little later. It was really awesome. He's really proving himself week after week. Kara told him that he took a real risk with that arrangement and that it paid off big time. Paula said that it had a classy Santana feel to it and then gave him a weird compliment that I could never repeat. Simon said it was original, well thought out and not karaoke and that it was a fantastic performance. Randy said that Kris knows who he is and has proven that he is ready for the big time. American Idol 8 Top 7 Lil Rounds “I’m Every Woman” Posted: 21 Apr 2009 05:08 PM PDT Lil Rounds chose to sing "I'm Every Woman" for Disco Week and I think it was a smart choice but I didn't love the delivery. I don't know what to think of Lil. She's got the voice, the look and everything she needs to be a star but she continues to make weird decisions. I did not love the vocal arrangement. Randy said she got the party started but that the performance sounded wild and still failed to show the kind of artist she could be. Kara agreed with Lil and said that she's been every woman but herself. Paula said that yesterday Lil was on complete vocal rest and made a great recovery but she still didn't tap into her inner goddess. Simon said that he thinks it is Lil's last week because there was no originality and the vocals were a mess. Tags: disco week, I'm every woman, lil rounds |
Bonnie Hunt Blasts “Pretty” Simon Cowell Posted: 21 Apr 2009 09:37 AM PDT Talk show host, Bonnie Hunt, took direct aim at Simon Cowell and his co-hosts from the U.K. talent show Britain's Got Talent for their reaction during the audition of Susan Boyle. The woman, who Bonnie admitted wouldn't be considered a "beauty" by today's standards, surprised the judges by delivering a beautiful rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Misérables and it was their shocked reaction that enraged Bonnie. Producers Like Fourth Judge, Kara Says It’s “Not Easy” Posted: 21 Apr 2009 08:39 AM PDT The American Idol producers are reportedly "pleased" with the addition of a fourth judge, Kara DioGuardi. While I sometimes like Kara as a person, I am not sure if I feel she adds anything useful to the panel in terms of critique for the contestants. Still, I know it's her first season and I want to be fair. The major issue I have is that the show runs long so some contestants (like Adam Lambert a couple weeks ago) end up getting cut off and it's not right. One executive, Cecile Frot-Coutaz, says that they have a solution: "It's hard for (the judges) to figure out whether they've spoken for 30 seconds or 45 seconds, so … we're going to try and help them with that and give them a sense of their timing so that we keep it under control a bit more," Frot-Coutaz said. Kara also reflected, in the current issue of OK! magazine, that the job can be difficult: "I probably in my own way didn’t really take in what a huge thing it was, just ’cause it would be so overwhelming. Until I kind of showed up and was like, `Omigod, what am I doing here? This is, like, huge!’ And then it really hit me when we went live that, wow, `I got to speak live in front of 30 million people?’ It’s not an easy job." image © 2009 FOX BROADCASTING CR: Jack Guy/FOX Tags: american idol fourth judge, american idol rumors |
