Whether you know the from hearing their many singles on the radio, caught their performance of “Zero” on SNL, or you just happened to learn of them from playing “Maps” on Rockband, it is hard to not like the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs once you learn of them. Live they are even more impressive than they are on recording thanks to front woman Karen O.

Electric Owls will be releasing their debut album, Ain’t Too Bright, on May 5th. The band is lead by Andy Herod of the Comas, who has been touring extensively in the US and Europe with Bishop Allen to promote the forthcoming album.
The first single off Ain’t Too Bright, “Magic Show”, is a solid and lilting electronic pop gem with airy choral backing vocals that are complimented by Herod’s scratchy vocals. Have a listen and make sure to pick up Ain’t Too Bright out May 5th on Vagrant Records.
Ladyhawke is New Zealander Pip Brown who is signed to Australian record label, Modular, like so many other great acts; Cut Copy, The Presets, Van She. She creates a blend of music that is all parts dance, pop, and nostalgia. A talented musician, Ladyhawke plays all the instruments on her self-titled debut album, released last September. Of all her tracks that I’ve heard, “Back Of The Van” is my favorite. It was actually one of my favorite songs of last year.
“Back Of The Van” is a 1980s retro song that is a mix between Van She and Stevie Nicks. And so appropriate is the Van She comparison as the album was produced by one of its members. The song features glittering synthesizers and romantically nostalgic lyrics, primarily a result of Brown’s voice and the hesitancy of a relationship while honestly speaking your feelings. It’s an extremely catchy tune reminiscent of The Cars or better yet, Fleetwood Mac spinning disco. And with that said, it is staggering the number of remixes out for this track. We shall cover but a few.
.Van She Tech Remix Van She Tech is a portion of the Aussie band, Van She, that has been creating most of the better remixes of 2008. This one is no less impressive though it is a dramatic reset of the song. It features the signature Van She Tech sound, making it unmistakably their creation, with distorted and dirty synthesizers that grind and jolt the melody. A pretty enjoyable part of the mix comes almost two minutes in when the song dramatically slows down, almost to a stutter, then picks up to an absurdly fast speed utilizing electronica from the 70s. It’s like the soundtrack to a night time car chase scene to a bad action 70s flick, but it’s not bad here. Most of the song is chopped up and trashed, recreated with Van She’s heavy beats and synths, hiding the vocals as well, which become snippets overlayed by sound. Enjoyable, but nothing close to the original, if that’s what you’d rather listen to.
.ddpesh Remix ddpesh keeps the sweetness to the song and by that I mean the vocals, which kick start the remix utilizing repetition as it’s lead in. The melody matches in a soft fashion. Not too electronic, not distorted, just happy and sunny with a touch of dancey-ness. I quite like this one, it’s simple but it’s still very different.
.Fred Falke Remix This mix is actually a bit of a bore. While I listen to it I am slightly yawning and nodding off. A surprise, actually, since Fred Falke’s mixes are usually pretty stunning. He must have lost motivation here. It’s a mid tempo mix, vocals intact, and though the melody is completely his own, it’s extremely uninspired. It has an early 00’s funk and dance style, but nothing that’ll really get you onto the dance floor.
.Mr. Vega Remix Vega’s remix on the other hand has some oomph to it. It’ll kick you from the nap you were taking during Falke’s mix. It’s starts off strong with heavy beats and heavy distortion, speeding up the song pretty significantly. This mix feels like those times where you’re at a really crowded club and the lights are about to give you a seizure, you’ve had to much to drink and you’re not really awake nor asleep but just moving through the mass of people with no direction. This mix is the soundtrack to that moment. It’s harsh and hectic.
