MP3 Minute: Prabir and the Substitutes “Who Is Going To Love You” Posted: 09 May 2009 12:55 PM PDT Prabir and the Substitutes from Richmond, Virginia just last month released their EP Hello, a follow up to last year’s debut LP. The quintet play driving and energetic power-pop with psychedelic guitar riffs nodding to an old school classic rock era. We’ve got “Who’s Going to Love You?”, Hello’s lead off track for download now. “Who’s Going to Love You?” starts of a bit mellow with a slick riff as front man Prabir sings “I fell asleep on my own, just like I did the night before. But I’m not afraid to let you know, I still love you.” It’s a lilting pop gem of love and longing, perfect for a gorgeous sunny day like today. Download “Who’s Going to Love You?”, burn a mix CD and chill outside soaking up some rays. Saturday wasn’t meant for anything less. Prabir and the Substitutes - “Who’s Going to Love You?” You can pick up Hello, or any other Prabir and the Substitutes albums, now. MP3 Minute: Regina Spektor “Laughing With” Posted: 09 May 2009 07:00 AM PDT Not much of the world has been hearing from the lovely and uber-talented Ms. Regina Spektor these days, aside from guesting on Ben Folds‘ new record and performing a few scattered concerts since she’s been holed up working on a new record to the delight of pretty much everyone everywhere. Warner Brothers Records will be releasing Spektor’s new album, titled Far, on June 23rd. The first track released from Far is “Laughing With”, a moody piano driven cut with a theme centering around God: no one laughs at him in times of trouble but he’s probably got a great sense of humor at a cocktail party telling jokes. Spektor sings, “No one’s laughing at god when they’re starving or freezing or poor” and later recounts, “but god could be funny at a cocktail party while listening to a good goddamn joke.” Regina Spektor - “Laughing With” The dual views of god, regardless of your own views on the subject of god, is an interesting concept, yet the song falls a bit flat. It’s neither a “Samson” nor a “Fidelity” nor a “Hotel Song”. Sure, it may not be fair to compare it to the latter two as it’s just Spektor and her piano without all the bells and whistles, but I’ve come to expect a little bit more from Spektor. While good for a filler track on Far, here’s hoping she’s got shinier gems for June 23rd.
