Twitter Search To Become Real Search

Posted: 07 May 2009 08:55 PM PDT

The fact that TwitterTwitter reviewsTwitter reviews's search is now often faster and more relevant than any other search engine out there is not a secret anymore. It is, however, a very limited search engine: it merely indexes a bunch of tweets. In its current state, it's great for tracking conversations, but it will never be a competitor to GoogleGoogle reviewsGoogle reviews.

This is about to change. According to CNET, Twitter's new VP of Operations, Santosh Jayaram, said that Twitter search will soon start crawling the links included in tweets. There's a lot of links there, and given Twitter's huge growth, soon these links might comprise a hefty portion of the overall web, making it a much more complete search engine that it currently is. It's a big technical leap, but it shows that the folks at Twitter are serious about search.

Jayaram gave another very interesting hint at where they're going: Twitter Search will also get a reputation ranking system. That means that not all tweets will be equal; rank will be calculated for each twitterer, probably based on several criteria such as number of followers, number of retweets and so forth.

When I recently wrote about Tweefind, a Twitter search that also takes rank into account, some commenters asked why are we putting so much emphasis on a very beta, buggy service. Well, regardless of the actual implementation, it was immediately obvious that the idea is not only great; it's precisely what Twitter needs.

This other part of Twitter's search strategy is equally important, and together these might prove to be the one-two punch they need to put some fear into their competitors. Crawling links will give Twitter's search engine the scope it needs to compete with Google. Rank will give it a way to make sense out of all that data and decide what's important.

At this point, it's hard to say whether Google's complex algorithm, initially based on the number of inbound links of a web site (Google's legendary PageRank) will stay superior to Twitter's algorithm which is based on real people's conversations. But even if Twitter's search proves to be superior in just a portion of the search market - and it already looks that way in certain cases - it will be a very important dent in Google's seemingly impenetrable armor.

Facebook For Windows Mobile

Posted: 07 May 2009 08:51 PM PDT

Windows Mobile users have long had to live without an official Facebook app. On Thursday, that all changes with the launch of Facebook for Windows Mobile 6. A test version of the app leaked in March, and now it goes on general release.

Although they've had to wait substantially longer than those with other handsets, Windows Mobile users do get one special feature: you can upload video straight to Facebook from the app, which Microsoft heralds as a first. Standard features listed by Microsoft include:

1. Send messages to any of the people in your Friends list.

2. Take pictures and videos on your phone, then upload them right to Facebook.

3. Send messages or call people in your Friends list.

4. Manage your profile and post anytime, anywhere.

Our lone Windows Mobile user at Mashable (Mashable reviews) describes it as "a cross between the BlackBerry and the iPhone app", but far less impressive than either - it's harder to navigate, with small buttons and more clicks required. It's nice, however, to have phone book integration on a Windows Mobile device: this provides easy access to all Facebook friends who listed a phone number on their Facebook (Facebook reviews) profiles.

Having tested unofficial Facebook apps for Windows Mobile (see FriendMobilizer, for example), it's fair to say there is little choice here: if you're using Windows Mobile and want a Facebook app, here's your solution.

Vibe Magazine Files For Bankruptcy

Posted: 07 May 2009 07:01 PM PDT

According to inside sources, Vibe Magazine is almost on the way out. Vibe's long-run in the game looks to be coming to an end. Sales and subscriptions have been at an all-time low for the past couple of months.

Vibe Magazine used to be a staple in the hip hop community, but ever since Editor-in-Chief Danyel Smith took over, the ship has been slowly sinking. I think we could say that she is single handedly responsible for Vibe Magazine falling apart.

Recently, a story was published in Vibe which listed the Top 50 Hip Hop Blogs out today. If you look at their list, it's clear to see that Vibe has NO CLUE what the kids are looking at. Ever since Danyel took over it seems like Vibe is detached with what's going on in the entertainment world. A magazine that started out as something that hip-hop fans could be proud of has quickly turned into a magazine hip hop fans are ashamed of.

It's a sad day when Vibe Magazine has approximately 130 pages and 70 of those pages are advertisements. As a loyal reader of Vibe magazine, who has followed it and watched the magazine grow for the past couple of years, I hate to say it, but Vibe is on the way out.

On the bright side, hopefully when Danyel Smith is out of a job, she can work with her husband over at Wak Radar. Good luck Elliot!
