MP3 Minute: Golau Glau’s “Soft Silver Young” Posted: 25 Jun 2009 12:02 PM PDT I get a lot of email. A lot. Some of the emails I get are full of great stuff. Others, not so much. Some just intrigue the hell out of me, as with this example from this morning:
Um, what? That was my initial reaction. But this marketing genius of a band got the better of my curiosity and I immediately listened to the mp3 they’d attached, “Soft Silver Young”, which you can hear below. Golau Glau – “Soft Silver Young” “Soft Silver Young” starts out with some catchy ethnic percussion that get you tapping your toes. Airy, echoed female vocal come in atop the percussion, creating a beautifully light tune that you can’t help but listen to on repeat. According to The Devil Has The Best Tuna (source), “golau” means light and “glau” means quickly in Celtic. Little else is known about this Wales band. Seems they’re keen on the “less is more” sentiment. We want more. Related PostsThis posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
New Devendra Banhart record to drop this fall Posted: 25 Jun 2009 11:00 AM PDT Devendra Banhart has completed work on his sixth full length album. The Bloody Beetroots to release LP “Romborama” August 25th Posted: 25 Jun 2009 09:45 AM PDT Two of the most badass DJs on the planet, The Bloody Beetroots (alter egos for Italian production and polymath Bob Rifo and onstage partner, DJ Tommy Tea), will be releasing their debut LP, Romborama, on Dim Mak Records set for release on August 25, 2009. Over the past year, The Bloody Beetroots have created some serious body-moving cuts that have dominated clubs, sold out shows and inspired a slew of remixes. The Bloody Beetroots – "Butter" Some of their previous efforts, including “Butter” from the Rombo EP and “Cornelius”, off an EP of the same name, along with a bunch of new tracks will make up the fellas’ highly anticipated debut LP. The Bloody Beetroots – "Cornelius" In addition to previous collaborator Steve Aoki, the album also boasts guest appearances by as The Cool Kids, Justin Pearson (The Locust, Head Wound City), Ed Banger artist Vicarious Bliss, and many more. The Bloody Beetroots have brought a sense of danger to dance floors across the globe. Armed with an endless supply of infectious beats, Rifo injects his thunderous grooves with the chaos and larger-than-life persona of late 70's British punk and Oi! The Beetroots' primary objective is to incite a dancefloor riot, and each track is always driven by addictive, pulsating beats. The Bloody Beetroots: myspace Related Posts |
Fool’s Gold to release self-titled debut Sept 29th Posted: 25 Jun 2009 09:15 AM PDT Los Angeles collective Fool's Gold weaves together western pop aesthetics with African rhythms and melodies. The group started as a side project of two young LA musicians, vocalist/bassist Luke Top and lead guitarist Lewis Pesacov, who set out to explore their shared love of various forms of African music (specifically Congolese, Ethiopian, Eritrean and Malian), Krautrock, and 80s dance influenced pop music. At first listen, it might be tempting to label Fool's Gold as "world music," but the band is, in its essence, a Los Angeles band; it is music made for hot nights in a sweltering desert. The multi-cultural group of players was born from a city that is a melting pot of neighborhoods and cultures. Fool’s Gold – “Surprise Hotel” The songs for the forthcoming self-titled album were mostly recorded live over a two-day session at the Sunset Lodge recording studio in Los Angeles in 2008, to be later completed in closets and apartment living rooms in 2009. Lewis and Luke collaborated on the music, written over a three-year span. Luke would then weave in the Hebrew/English lyrics. The Hebrew initially tied him to a birthplace that he barely knew, but evolved to be the perfect vehicle to express the overarching themes of duality that are the heart of the songs. The songs resonate beyond just the immigrant experience to one that is understood by anyone who has struggled with dispelling illusions of the ego and the world. Although the melodies are jubilant, the irreverent and whimsical lyrics belie the tension of one exploring the existential and physical self. Look for the Fool’s Gold self-titled debut on September 29th. Tracklisting: Fool’s Gold: myspace Most Commented PostsThis posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Planned Tour Date Route: It’s endeavors such as this that make me wish I lived on the West Coast. Rocky is a Popwreckoning favorite and puts on a great show. I can’t even begin to imagine how amazingly great such an intimate show with him performing in a living room or basement would be. I’m already wildly jealous of everyone that gets to host a date. Interview With: Derek Pressnall of Tilly and the Wall Posted: 25 Jun 2009 06:45 AM PDT In anticipation of their short summer jaunt leading the tap-dancing, glitter-loving Tilly and the Wall to Kansas, I got the chance to catch up with one of the boys (yes, one of the two boys in that band). Here’s my interview with guitarist/vocalist Derek Pressnall: Derek Pressnall, Tilly and the Wall: What is this for? PW: So what have you guys been up to? It has been awhile since the tour and about a year since O came out. PW: Now, I have noticed that art, especially with you, has been very important. How do you balance music with art as in the painting/drawing sort of stuff? PW: So I know that your band has had some PETA praises in the past, but what do you think of PETA's attacks on President Obama? PW: You are in a band that is predominately female. What is it like touring with so many females and being one of the few guys in the band. PW: How does it compare to Flowers? PW: You guys are playing Kansas City, well Lawrence, which is basically where I'm based out of soon, what can people expect at that show? PW: OK. I was recently at Bonnaroo and during Of Montreal's set, someone had a sign that said Tilly and the Wall loves you. I also saw on-line that Of Montreal is described as a sister band. Can you kind of explain what that means? PW: I understand you're kind of a coffee aficionado. What is the best coffee drink to you?
