The Twang - ‘Barney Rubble’ Music Video Review

Posted: 27 Jul 2009 03:58 PM PDT

I usually stick to covering artists I like here on Brit Music Scene. I think that’s natural for any blogger because writing about something you don’t actually care about shows through very easily. So I’d ask you bear that admission in mind when reading the following review of The Twang’s new record Barney Rubble. Because if you hadn’t already guessed, I’m not a fan. In fact, I hate The Twang with a passion.

Why then am I reviewing their comeback single? Because it seems that a lot of people love The Twang, for whatever reasons. And they buy their records in significant numbers. Significant enough for me to warrant reviewing the first single of their second album Jewellery Quarter, due for release on August 3. Barney Rubble marks the return of The Twang almost two years after they belly-flopped on to the scene. Are they still as God awful as they used to be?

I’m afraid the answer is an unequivocal yes. Oh, they’ve changed their sound a little, and tried to drag in some other genres, but they still suck really quite badly. The Twang always felt ten years out of place and that trend continues with Barney Rubble. The single is less Madchester and more Europop but I personally don’t regard that as a positive musical leap to make.

It seems as though The Twang are incapable of creating their own sound so instead they look around until they find someone else’s. Barney Rubble sounds like the lovechild of Dario G and The Doves, an ugly lovechild at that. The parents are both fine in their own right but the kid that was produced by their coupling is one that makes abortion sound like a good idea.

The borrowed bassline and guitar riffs are overlaid by the singing (if you can call it that) of just barely credible lyrics which sound like they came from the mind of a 5-year-old. Although they do contain the line, It’s this repetitive, repetitive nonsense that brings her down.” To be honest, that’s a fair way of describing the song but it isn’t just “her” that it’s bringing down.

The video fits well with the song. By that I mean it’s cheesy and ludicrous. It shows the band taking a holiday on what looks like a Greek island. Nothing really happens so it looks like just being an excuse for the band to get a free holiday under the pretense they were going to make a good video for their new single.

I hated The Twang in 2007 and I still hate The Twang in 2009. I know there are a lot of people out there who like this band but I just cannot see the appeal. The music is generic, doesn’t know what it wants to be, and looks to have been made just to sell. Which is never good.
