Bloc Party Unsure Of Future - May Never Record Again

Bloc Party are one of those bands I got in to very early on in their career. I first heard them all the way back in 2003 and 2004 when early versions of She’s Hearing Voices and Banquet started doing the rounds on radio stations such as XFM. Then in early 2005, they released their brilliant debut album Silent Album and I was hooked.

Then came second album A Weekend In The City, which was still brilliant, and contained gems such as Hunting For Witches and The Prayer. However, Bloc Party then took a rapid departure from what we knew them for and became much more alternative. Too alternative for my liking. Intimacy was released in 2008 and the jagged guitars had been replaced by some pretty inaccessible sounds.

However, even with that in mind, I’d be saddened to see Bloc party disappear altogether because they are still one of the most exciting and inventive British bands around. Which makes comments made by lead singer Kele Okereke recently a little worrying. According to TripleJ, Okereke was speaking backstage at Australia’s ‘Splendour In The Grass 2009′ when he said:

“We don’t know what the future holds. It’s weird, we’re out of contract now so… we might take a year off, we might take three years off…. we might never make a record again or we might head straight back in and do a record. We’ll see how we feel come the end of this touring cycle.”

That’s a lot of “might”s and a lot of different options facing Bloc Party. There’s really no greater difference you can get than the one between never making a record again and making another record straight away. And that’s what Okereke is suggesting is the choice.

But why would they want to give up now, when things are going reasonably well? Bloc Party have always had a following and although the fan base has changed a little over the course of the three albums, it’s still there and of reasonable size.

Sure, Intimacy isn’t my favorite Bloc Party album but I have faith that a fourth LP could be a return to form. And I’ll be more than gutted if that fourth LP never actually gets made.
