Mat Kearney @ The Pageant, St. Louis

Posted: 15 Jul 2009 11:33 AM PDT

Mat Kearney 5Mat Kearney packed the Pageant on Monday, July 13, with quite a few lovely ladies who were in store for a 15-song set showcasing his ability to combine the dark soulful songs of Snow Patrol with the pop accessibility of Coldplay. But before Kearney's set, I had the pleasure of photographing the rather lovely to look at , who's song, “Love, Save The Empty”, has been making the rounds on radio and TV countdown shows. McCarley opened the show with a 40 minute set consisting of songs off her debut album,  "Love, Save The Empty," in addition to a crowd pleasing cover of Suzanne Vega's "Tom's Diner" (a song surely you all remember from the 90s not by name, but by it's repetitive do do do do) featuring some beat-boxing by her pianist.

After Mr. Kearney was running a little late, the girls in front grew restless and began chants for Mat. Luckily, he didn't keep his public waiting too long. The crowd in question (actually surprised by the sold out show due to all the All-Star game festivities in the city) consisted of a woman who seemingly travels the country following Mat Kearney as she showed me her set lists from some of his California shows. The crowd was rather subdued as they sat back and enjoyed Kearney's set consisting of songs of his new album "City of Black and White" and a medley of 's "Chasing Pavement" before closing the night out with his 2007 hit "Nothing Left to Lose".

Set List:
All I Have
Fire & Rain
Crashing Down
Breathe
Middle
Lifeline
Girl America
Closer
City of Black and White
Here We Go
Runaway Car
All I Need

Kaki King brings “Gorgeous Works of Guitar” to Brooklyn

Posted: 15 Jul 2009 11:25 AM PDT

In between the release of her Mexican Teenagers EP, touring Italy, and playing Bonnaroo, Kaki King has spent her summer spearheading a unique multi-media art project all in the name of good creative fun…and charity.kaki king 3

The Kaki King Guitar Art Project began as a simple query. What would happen if 12 brand new, shiny guitars ended up in the hands of twelve lucky artists?

Kaki King set out on a creative journey to find out the answer to just that question a few months ago posting a call for submissions on her Myspace/Facebook/Twitter. The idea being that a group of artistically inclined fans might respond to the challenge. Once the selections were made, each artist was given a guitar by Kaki and then, inspired by one of her songs, used the guitar as a canvas to created a visual representation of the music.

"Everyone tells me that my playing is best witnessed visually—so this is one interpretation of that statement," says King.

The idea was hatched after a friend remarked that Kaki's playing of the guitar was very much a visual experience and that paint on her fingers as she played would be an interesting idea. Kaki decided to take that concept a little further. Since then, the artists have been hard at work creating what Kaki has dubbed "gorgeous works of guitar" in preparation for the project's upcoming one night only gallery exhibit to be held at LittleField Performance and Art Space in Brooklyn on August 7, 2009. All 12 pieces will be on display and Kaki will perform a special rendition of "Pink Noise" with paint on her fingers, the resulting work of guitar will then be auctioned off for charity.

In addition to the guitars, the artists have kept a record of their deconstruction/reconstruction process in the form of video diaries, blogging, and photography, a selection of which will also be on display the night of the show.

To find out more about Kaki and this exciting event, become a fan of Kaki King Guitar Art on Facebook.

You can also check out the Spin.com interview where King talks about performing at Bonnaroo, laying down tracks with Timbaland, and the inspiration behind this project.

Discovery – Discovery LP

Posted: 15 Jul 2009 10:15 AM PDT

Remind me why we need another indie-pop super group? Members of and populate Discovery and that's a bad place to start. But the real burning question is why do these guys think that it's okay to make R&B music the hipsters can jive to? It's not. Now they have some hooks, that's for sure; you'll hum some of this and it can be downright maddeningly catchy. But it's so trite, so immediate and embarrassing in its guilty pleasure-ness that I have a hard time ever believing that someone would cop to actually owning or listening to it…at least not someone from the massive circles of fans that orbit around their day job projects. discovery

Discovery is a derivative version of Justin Timberlake's solo output blended with Kanye West's 808s and Heartbreak. It's , but substitute misguided posing for actual ambition. While Discovery has a trick or two up their sleeve, they seem fine with bludgeoning those tricks to death. Like the circular arpeggios—I playfully dub them "digital waterfalls"—that dart around "Osaka Loop Line"; solid idea, but when used constantly, it loses the intrigue. "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" sports an ear-turning, choppy female hook reminiscent of that song everyone is in love with right now. Except that it also features some awkward lyrics (given the voice singing it) and you eventually have to listen to the rest of the tune. Ohh, and if you're as tired of autotune as I am, don't even bother with "Carby”. These guys didn't get the memo from Jay-Z.

The album is mercifully short, clocking in at around 36 minutes, but the length just reminds you of how much drivel is actually here. I mean, did we really need an electro-twee remake of "I Want You Back" by the ? This would have worked way better as an EP. The even shorter length would have forced the guys to distill the quirky, indie-dance vibe they were going for into something actually appealing and worthy of more than a cursory spin or two.

Alec Ounsworth of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah goes solo

Posted: 15 Jul 2009 09:22 AM PDT

is excited to announce the upcoming release of Mo Beauty from celebrated singer/songwriter . The Philadelphia native, who earned acclaim with his band , recently recorded his debut solo record in the music-steeped metropolis of New Orleans at the famed Piety St. recording studio.

For Mo Beauty, Ounsworth was backed by George Porter Jr. on bass, Stanton Moore on drums, on keys, and Matt Sutton on baritone and pedal-steel guitars, with additional help from some members of the diversely talented New Orleans community. The album was produced by veteran musician/producer and fellow Philadelphian (Los Lobos, John Lee Hooker, The Replacements), who initially suggested the New Orleans setting.

“I met Steve while I was in New Orleans. He said, ‘Do you want to make a record?’ And I said, ‘Maybe.’ You see, I was just starting to work on the Flashy Python record, and was working on other projects as well. Nevertheless, it seemed I had some songs ready to be put forward (most old, some new) and so ‘maybe’ became ‘yes’ in relatively short order.

New Orleans informed the spirit of the record, as it should. It’s not a ‘New Orleans record,’ though, because, besides “Holy, Holy, Holy Moses”, most of the songs weren’t written specifically for New Orleans . . . Any record can be influenced by its location aesthetically, and some are more than others. So it was with this record . . .it is New Orleans, after all.” –

Mo Beauty will be released on October 20, 2009.

Tracklistings:
01. Modern Girl ( . . . with scissors)
02. Bones in the Grave
03. Holy, Holy, Holy Moses (song for New Orleans)
04. That is not my Home (after Bruegel)
05. Idiots in the Rain
06. South Philadelphia (Drug Days)
07. What Fun.
08. Me and You, Watson
09. Obscene Queen Bee #2

Regina Spektor – Far

Posted: 15 Jul 2009 07:15 AM PDT

Regina Spektor's new album Far is fun and rompy. Spektor's light, spry voice bops effortlessly along on each song. Far is charming like 2006's Begin to Hope and 2004's Soviet Kitsch, but sounds more polished.regina-far

The tracks on Far lyrically make more sense and seem more complete. Each song tells a story, where as on other albums, they only seemed to be about random thoughts. Don't get me wrong. There are plenty of random lyrics, such as in the song "Folding Chair", when Spektor says, "I've got a perfect body because my eyelashes catch my sweat. Yes they do."

Too. Darn. Cute.

Far has a nice balance of pop-like, radio ready songs, such as "The Calculation", and "Summer in the City", and sweet, simple ballads such as "Human of the Year". A few of the album's songs have a more complex sound, such as in "Machine", where Spektor incorporates subtle piano melodies and quasi-industrial drums and bass to create a delicate, yet menacing sound.

While Begin to Hope was full of singles that hooked ears from the first listen, Far is more understated. It grows on you and becomes more addictive with each listen.

Far showcases Spektor as a more mature songwriter. A great listen, indeed.

Tracklisting:
01. The Calculation
02. Eet
03. Blue Lips
04. Folding Chair
05. Machine
06. Laughing With
07. Human of the Year
08. Two Birds
