New Muse Album - The Resistance - Inspired By ‘1984′

Each Muse album is a masterpiece in its own right. The band draw inspiration from a number of sources, including what it around them, and produce an LP worthy of a place on anyone’s iPod.

The Resistance is unlikely to break that trend, as what I’ve already heard of it sounds fresh, exciting, and innovative. It’s the Muse we know and love but with the boundaries pushed once again, the limits smashed to bits.

I’ve been waiting for this album literally since about a month after Black Holes and Revelations was released. Although I still listen to that album, there’s something special about a new Muse album, playing it through for the first time and experiencing the sheer joy of the musical landscape it creates.

Muse started working on The Resistance in early 2008, but it wasn’t until this May that details started being revealed, with Muse announcing the name of the album and release date on Twitter. The Resistance is coming on September 14.

We know the tracklisting, as well as the fact that the album features some slap bass, but what about the inspiration for The Resistance? In an interview with Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1, lead singer Matt Bellamy explained that 1984, the George Orwell novel featuring a dystopian future, is the main inspiration.

He said:

“When I read it this time I was much more taken with the love story. I read it once in school about 15 years ago it was all about the politics. But when I read it this time I was much more taken with the love story in the book between Juliette and Winston.”

“In the early years I was confused about what my emotions were trying to express. As I said, being in England or seeing what’s going on in England has defined it as being a lot more direct and a lot more down to earth. I think the first song [Uprising] sums up how a lot of people feel and it’s that we need to change.”

So it sounds as though The Resistance is a mixture of being a rallying cry for us all to resist governmental control with elements of love mixed in. Which is a heady but quite brilliant blend, which is exactly how 1984 can be described.

It seems a tall order to take inspiration from and do justice to one of the most famous, important, and inspirational novels of the 20th Century, but if any band can manage it, it’s Muse. Roll On September 14.
