| The Verve Split Again - Third Time Lucky For Ashcroft & Co? Posted: 11 Aug 2009 02:50 PM PDT The Verve - brilliant band, possibly one of the most underrated bands of the last decade. But their reputation and prospects for truly fulfilling their potential as world-beaters has been undermined by the fact that the band members all seem to hate each other. They’ve already split up twice over the years, before reforming and re-forming, releasing new material, and playing sold-out gigs. And now they’ve reportedly split again. ![]() The Verve formed way back in 1990 and they spent the first half of the 1990s achieving mild commercial success while being feted by critics. But they split in 1995 after releasing their second album Northern Soul. They came back together in 1997 and released their magnum opus Urban Hymns. A series of very successful singles followed as well as some huge gigs which helped cement The Verve’s position as one of the best bands in the world. Unfortunately, it only lasted a couple of years before the band split again in 1999.
Fast-forward eight long years to 2007 when The Verve announced they were getting back together. They released Forth, a new album backed by a sold-out tour. However, they refused to sign a multi-album deal, and that decision may now have proved sensible. According to The Mirror, The Verve have now split up again, for the third and probably last time. Although who knows what will happen in a few years time. The split this time reportedly occurred due to more in-fighting, with the old rows all blowing up again. A big problem was Nick McCabe’s drinking and party lifestyle, which Richard Ashcroft wasn’t keen on. The split hasn’t yet been confirmed but it looks highly likely. McCabe and Simon Jones have already formed a new band called The Black Ships. I’ve been a big fan of The Verve over the years but I just think they should call it a day for good now. They obviously can’t work together and I think now is the time to realize it’s never going to work. So no more reunions in a few years time when the band members think their differences are over. Because they clearly aren’t and likely never will be. [Photo Source: Newscom] Post from: Brit Music Scene |
