AM to play Philadelphia’s World Cafe Live, new album August 11th Posted: 07 Aug 2009 12:03 PM PDT LA-based songwriter AM is getting ready to release his sophomore album, Future Sons & Daughters, due out on August 11th and will be hitting the road in support of the record. On August 20th, AM stops by Philadelphia at World Cafe Live downstairs with The Rescues. For his new album, AM found inspiration in his own extensive 1960s record collection ranging from obscure Brazilian music to Italian soundtracks. Fusing simple, intelligent lyrics, undeniable pop sensibilities and sparse, psychedelic grooves, Future Sons & Daughters strikes a balance between the classic and the modern. Watch the video for “Grand Opinions” and, if you like what you here, you can download the track below! Future Sons & Daughters brings a heady brew of twinkling, Anglified folk-rock-pop and twanging Americana, simultaneously caressing Philly soul and funky R&B. With bridges and choruses reminiscent of The Beatles and Badfinger, Curtis Mayfield and Jorge Ben, AM demonstrates the simple fact of songwriting: imagination and taste is what it’s all about. Be sure to catch AM at World Cafe Live on August 20th, or in a city near you. Tour Dates: Related Posts |
Thao with the Get Down Stay Down release “Know Better Learn Faster” on October 13th Posted: 07 Aug 2009 10:17 AM PDT Kill Rock Stars is pleased to announce that Thao with The Get Down Stay Down will be releasing their second full-length album, Know Better Learn Faster, on October 13, 2009.
Thao and the ever-versatile Get Down Stay Down (Adam Thompson on bass, keys and additional guitar, and Willis Thompson on drums and percussion) return with the follow up to their critically lauded and riotously applauded previous album, We Brave Bee Stings and All, the breakout success and best-selling record of 2008 for Kill Rock Stars. With super-producer and friend Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Jim James) again at the helm, Know Better Learn Faster perfectly captures the band as their more mature, tastefully raucous, subdued and musically adventurous selves. Honed, trimmed and tightened over the last year and a half of constant touring, the now-trio delivers Thao's cleverly crafted and emotionally evocative songs with vibrant, innovative instrumentation, incredible energy and a still-acutely-solid sense of what sounds good. The new batch of songs spans all genres and influences, all the while staying faithful to their distinct style, sharp wit, and the infectious and enamoring exuberance of their renowned live shows. But the band can be serious too. Know Better Learn Faster is in many ways a boisterous, frenzied, and resigned break-up record, and with that territory comes a few songs wherein Thao does not employ her trademark method of juxtaposing brighter melodies with melancholic content. "A few of these are just straightforwardly sad. Sometimes there's not much room to mince words and music when you feel like shit," she says. The diverse and wide-ranging songwriting only helps to showcase the trio's formidable musicianship: all members have stepped up and expanded their repertoires to fill out the trio's sound. To further help the cause, the band was thrilled and humbled to enlist album guests Andrew Bird, Eric Earley of Blitzen Trapper, Laura Veirs, Nathan Crockett of Horse Feathers, and close friend and new 4AD artist Tune-Yards. Know Better Learn Faster is a deeply felt, honestly rendered audit of the end of one or any number of relationships. Thao says: "We are thankful for the opportunity to have explored and then purged all crippling tensions and anxiety inherent in such dramas and hope you enjoy the scrappy by-product. Popwreckoning Exclusive: download Golden Bloom’s “The Mountainside Says” Posted: 07 Aug 2009 07:15 AM PDT What better way to celebrate your debut album than to give it away in weekly exclusives? That’s just what Popwreckoning favorite Golden Bloom is doing with its new album, Fan the Flames, which drops on August 18th. Popwreckoning has been bragging about the talents of Golden Bloom mastermind and multi-instrumentalist (piano, bass, drums, sax, harmonica) Shawn Fogel for some time, so we’re ecstatic to bring you, dear readers, the 8th track from Fan the Flames, “The Mountainside Says” (more on that below). On Fan the Fames, Fogel showcases his pop sensibilities, musicianship and talent for writing damn good songs be it intro “E.H.M.” which kicks off the record with a burst of energy in the form of a rapid fire snare coupled with driving guitar and key hooks, the ballad-like approach of the more personal “She Leaves Me Poetry” and politically minded gems “Doomsday Devices” and”The Fight at the End of the Tunnel”. As part of the “Summer of Golden Bloom”, Popwreckoning is excited to offer “The Mountainside Says” as an exclusive download from Fan the Flames. “The Mountainside Says” is a bright, melodious track musically, that is coupled with heavy lyrics dealing with social commentary on the state of religion into today’s world. Fogel sings, “‘I’ve got the answer,’ the TV set says / on the old King James Bible commercial. / When we start taking out ads / do our faiths become fads? / Our religion’s reduced to rehearsal. / So we practice our prayers every night / and in god’s awesome name we still fight / until each of our souls have been saved / and our sins been forgiven / no matter how sick or depraved.” You simply cannot ignore this song, even just this verse alone — whether religious zealot, agnostic or what have you, these words demand a reaction. “The Mountainside Says” exhibits Fogel’s ability to stray from safe and easy, propelling him into the realm of truly great songwriters. Golden Bloom – “The Mountainside Says” Though Fogel played all the instruments on the record, Golden Bloom's live show lineup includes Deleon frontman Dan Saks, Ryan Ball, bassist for famed Pink Floyd tribute band the Machine, Brooklyn guitar ace Jeff Patlingrao, Guster sideman Josh Cohen, and music journalist Michael Azerrad. With such talent all around, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Golden Bloom puts on one of the best live shows around. Fan the Flames is out on August 18th.
