MP3 Minute: Tigercity “Fake Gold”

Posted: 21 Aug 2009 02:28 PM PDT

Popwreckoning friends Tigercity are releasing a new LP this fall entitled Ancient Lover and we’re happy to offer you the record’s first single, “Fake Gold.” Though darker than what we’re used to from these Brooklyn boys, this track is just a silky and slinky, rife with pounding beats, slick synths, backing falsettos and that sexy 80s-esque feel that Tigercity does so well.tigercity

Tigercity – “Fake Gold”

Having spent most of their time touring since the release of their critically and commercially successful 2007 EP, Pretend not to Love, Tigercity has been bringing their brand of pop escapism to the masses. The new LP, Ancient Lover, utilizes a new arsenal of vintage synthesizers and layers of beautiful ambient guitar to support songs about the ups and downs of rock life and is a testament that Tigercity is poised for mass recognition. Possessing a sound of the likes of un-ironic Hall and Oates meets , Tigercity etches out accessible songs but with a little more darkness than the usual popper.

Why? – Eskimo Snow

Posted: 21 Aug 2009 10:33 AM PDT

The quirkiness factor of Oakland based, Why? is through the roof. Operating in a strange space between indie hip-hop and folk, they’re a band with a rich sense of craftsmanship. Their lyrics are abstract, concentrating more on a feeling than communicating a tangible story, and the hip-hop inspired vocal delivery of lead singer, Jonathan “Yoni” Wolf is genuine and memorable.why-eskimosnow

The upcoming release, Eskimo Snow is a much more subdued and restrained effort than the previous release, Alopecia. The songs on Eskimo Snow are described by Wolf as “the least hip-hop out of anything I’ve ever been involved with.”

Sure, the hip-hop elements are nearly gone, but the songs are also simpler, less bombastic and lighter on the over-the-top imagery that they have evoked in the past. I have no problems with this subdued approach and I can see the appeal in this kind of exploration, however, Eskimo Snow lacks that devious vitality that I cherished in their previous efforts. Still, there are a few of those cherished lines that stay with you such as Yoni’s declaration of “no flash photography” on “Even The Good Wood Gone,” or “looks like a sky for shoeing horses under” on “One Rose” which really give the album a pulse.

Why?’s newest offering is a solid album that flows well from beginning to end with a few songs that resonate such as “The Blackest Purse,” and “Berkeley By Hearseback.” There is a strong piano and xylophone presence on this album, culminating in a particularly nice sound on “Into the Shadows Of My Embrace.”

While, overall, I’d say that the restrained approach on Eskimo leaves me with a disappointing feeling, its still remarkably compelling and some of the most unique bit of music out there.
