| Muse – ‘Uprising’ Music Video Review (Live) Posted: 14 Sep 2009 06:29 PM PDT Muse are probably the best band on the British music scene right now, and one of the best bands in the world to boot. After having success in the U.K., Europe, Japan, and elsewhere in the 15 years since they formed, they now look set to take the United States by storm, with a small but passionate following building in the notoriously-hard-to-crack country. ![]() The inclusion of Knights of Cydonia in Guitar Hero III will have helped, as did the sheer brilliance of Black Holes and Revelations, the album that spawned that single. And now they’re back, with Uprising, the first single to be released from The Resistance, an album three years in the making.
You’ll straight away notice that this isn’t the music video for Uprising, which at the time of writing hasn’t been released. Instead, this is Muse performing the song at their recent homecoming gig in Teignmouth, Devon. As soon as the official music video has been released I’ll swap it in, so keep checking back for updates. Uprising is both classic Muse and a completely new direction for the band. How is that possible? Well, it’s instantly recognizable as Muse yet has a different fell to it than any of their previous songs. And that, for me at least, is the sign of a good band, able to evolve and energize their music with something new at every turn while retaining what makes them unique and stand out from the crowd. Uprising is rock music at its best, with the heavy bass and rhythmic drumbeat. Yet it also feels a little dancey and, it must be said, also borrows from the Doctor Who theme music, especially at the beginning. Not that that is a bad thing you understand. Overall, this is everything I expect from a Muse track and more. It’s heavy yet mainstream enough to have widespread appeal. The lyrics are meaningful, it’s ultra-catchy, and demands multiple listens. If The Resistance lives up to the standard this first single sets then most fans will be very happy bunnies.
