UK Music Charts – Sept 27 – Madonna and Taio Cruz

Posted: 27 Sep 2009 02:32 PM PDT

The UK music charts may mean less now than they used to but they're still an indicator of what's hot on the popular British music scene right now. This week's Top 10 singles and Top 10 albums are listed below.

Madonna Celebration Album Cover

In the singles chart, Taio Cruz has held on to the top spot he nabbed last week to make it two weeks in a row at number one. Empire State Of Mind jumped to number three meaning Jay-Z now has two records in the top 10. Very little movement elsewhere means this is a dull week in the UK singles chart.

On the albums front, Madonna has gone straight in at number one with Celebration, a 36-track Greatest Hits compilation. This means she has equaled Elvis Presley’s record for the most number one albums by a solo artist. The Resistance by Muse slips to number two while Dizzee Rascal has scored big with Tongue N’ Cheek entering at number three.

Futureheads Ready New Album – But It’s “Complicated”

Posted: 27 Sep 2009 09:46 AM PDT

I’ve been a fan of the Futureheads for a long time now, and have seen them through the highs and lows they have, as a band, experienced so far. Their first, self-titled album was a big success, and they had a top 10 hit with their cover of Kate Bush’s Hounds Of Love.

Their second album, News and Tributes, didn’t do so well and they were consequently dropped by their record label. So they set up their own record label and released their third album, This Is Not The World, through it in 2008.

They’ve been away for a while but according to BBC 6Music are now preparing to release their fourth album. Although the title of this article may imply the name of the new Futureheads album is Complicated, that isn’t the case. It may end up being so but it is instead currently merely a description of the forthcoming LP.

Guitarist Ross Millard said:

“We took a little bit of time off at the beginning of 2009 because Dave our drummer and his girlfriend had a little baby boy. Things have slowed down in that respect and this summer we’ve been putting the finishing touches to the album and it’s ready to go right now.”

“We’ve got some plans to get out on the road a little bit before Christmas. We’re really excited about this stuff, we’ve spent a lot of time making this record and in fact we’ve made a lot of it in the North East for the first time. It feels like we’ve been able to concentrate on things.”

“It’s forked off into two directions, our last album was very direct. With this record we didn’t want to do that again, the songs are a lot more complicated. I’ve had to go back to practicing the guitar to even play half these riffs.”

That all sounds good to me. Not only are they planning to tour soon, the new album is almost ready. What’s more, it sounds as though the Futureheads have upped their game a little for this one, so I’m hoping for some hard punk riffs countered by awe-inspiring harmonies. Or, in other words, a return to the style of the first album.
