Kid Koala Presents: The Slew – 100% tour CDR/download Posted: 27 Sep 2009 05:15 PM PDT Engineered as a stage show – after a documentary film that Kid Koala and Dynomite D had been working on had been canned – Kid Koala has brought his uncanny turntable manipulation to the stage once again to bring a killed project back to life. Koala and Dynomite D met the former rhythm section of Grammy Award winning Australian rock band Wolfmother and told them of the lost film and their desire to resurrect the music. Chris Ross and Myles Heskett loved the clips and agreed to be involved, adding to the whole stage show. Featuring drums, bass, keys and DJ's working across a truly excessive six turntables, this is 70 minutes of heavy beats and raw guitar cuts. Channeling every psychedelic rock band you could imagine (from Baby Grandmothers, Led Zeppelin to Weed) with a huge injection of funk and turntable wizardry, this makes for a raw rock 'n' roll riot, heavy on the cut-up blues vocal vibe. This really is a wild ride, reinforcing the skills Kid Koala has, and also the notion that Wolfmother’s rhythm section really was the best thing about the band. Initially released as a tour only CD-R, this recording has been available to download on numerous sites for a limited time. So go on – search it out, you won't be disappointed. OK, here it is here, available straight from Kid Koala's website at http://nufonia.com/. Juice Aleem – First Lesson 12″ (Big Dada/Inertia) Posted: 27 Sep 2009 05:01 PM PDT The first EP off the new album for Juice Aleem is vocally delivered like a post-modern Bone Thugs & Harmony. ‘First Lesson’ reinstates faith in the UK hip hop scene with simple production, catchy hooks and great lyricism. The Evil Nine remix allows ‘First Lesson’ to cross over to the dancefloor, with 808’s and 80’s synths turned up to maximum, leaving only the chorus intact, stripping away the rest of the vocals. The Rude Kid remix takes a more grime approach, letting the vocal ride the growling bass and electronics – the pick of the remixes. The Lo Fu remix doesn’t quite know what genre it should be, which is a refreshing change because theres so much eclecticism here, but with enough reference points in bass music to make it work. The half-step skank is particularly addictive as it breaks down to 8-bit melodies. The Shadowless Domain remix ventures into post-rave territory, but not really building to anything. Check Juice Aleem – his flow is seriously addictive. I’m sure the new album will be on fire. Posted: 27 Sep 2009 05:04 PM PDT DOS4GW sounds like some old school programming jargon, one that I’m not up with, not being nerdy enough and all. There is not much info on the guy, even on his myspace, all I can ascertain is he’s from Perth, but has some connection to the growing abstract scene in Melbourne, having played on the same bill as Aoi, whom I have reviewed here previously. What we have here is a three track sampler, kicking off with ‘Ell’, eminating some seriously heavyweight bass pressure, languishing somewhere between hip hop, dubstep and post-rave mayhem, great production that rolls nicely. ‘Never Again’ gives more of the same, but on the half-step, and reducing the melody to its 8-bit basics. It’s futuristically retro; fans of Disrupt and Zomby take note. ‘440′ winds things back into hip hop territory, but keeping the subtle 8-bit influences. The drums are massive, distorted, as is the bass: The Gaslamp Killer would love this stuff, dirty as all hell. Its great to see new Australian acts really experimenting with sound, the next few years are going to be very fertile. I need more of DOS4GW even if it is just code on my computer. Some vinyl would be nice but I dare say the bass may do some serious damage. Ace. Wayne Stronell DOS4GW – Sampler (demo) is a post from: Cyclic Defrost Magazine. |
