Check out the new video for HEALTH’s “Die Slow,” off their latest release Get Color, due out this coming Tuesday, September 8, 2009. I’m not saying that the video will induce a seizure, but if I had epilepsy, I wouldn’t watch it.

MP3 Minute: Elizabeth & the Catapult “Taller Children”

Posted: 04 Sep 2009 09:56 AM PDT

Elizabeth Ziman, front woman and namesake for Elizabeth & the Catapult, has hints of the bird & the bee in her sweet yet confident voice. A classically trained pianist from her Greenwich Village youth, a now mature Ziman has produced a gem of an album with Taller Children, with help from guitarist Pete Lalish, drummer Danny Molad and producer (Bright Eyes, , Rilo Kiley).

The album’s title track is lighthearted with airy vocals and a solid beat to get you moving in your cubicle; you’ll really catch the bird & the bee comparison in this tune. Catch the video here and download the mp3 below!

Outside Lands, Day 3 @ Golden Gate Park, San Francisco

Posted: 04 Sep 2009 09:02 AM PDT

With the summer fog and windy chill separating the locals from the ill-prepared tourists, day 3 of the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park had both moments of brilliance and powerful performances across the festival's seven stages. If you missed day 1 or day 2, check them out now!

Matt & Kim
Almost too happy for their own good, the duo of Matt and Kim bounced through their Casio-infused set including "Daylight" and "I Wanna."

All of the elements were in place for The 's mid-tempo performance on Sunday afternoon. The weather was indeed dead and gloomy and The Kills' Alison Mosshart's vocals were bluesy, primal and raw. While , pulling double-duty on drums and vocals, fits the personality of the band perfectly, he was overshadowed by Alison's powerful onstage presence.

Modest Mouse
Proving that plaid may just be the new black, Modest Mouse played their set, curiously skipping their most radio-friendly tune "Float On." While the show was enjoyable, I found that I would rather have a Modest Mouse experience which includes a comfy chair, good headphones and a copy of The Moon & Antarctica.

Loop!Station
Performing their third brilliant set in three days, Loop!Station shared part of their show with performers from the Vau de Vire Society.

's hard-core fans were out in large numbers to see the free-spirited absurdist-rockers on Sunday. Filling the spot occupied by Primus at last year's fest, and Gene (Mickey Melchiondo and Aaron Freeman) showed their cred as gifted guitarists.

(Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam) failed to generate much enthusiasm from the crowd, even after passing out hundreds of annoying toy horns which, coincidentally, sounded just like "boo" when played en masse. It was quite fitting that Street Sweeper Social Club's version of .'s "Paper Planes" was more inspired than her own.

Band of Horses
Shimmering with reverb, the Southern-tinged rock of Band of Horses was filled with warm and moving moments. Song such as “The Funeral” and “Ode to LRC” were part of a well-crafted and rousing set.

Tenacious D
Bringing skits, stunt doubles and shtick-heavy rock, Jack Black and Kyle Gass closed out the final night of the festival. After being named as replacements for who dropped out due to the throat cancer diagnosis of Beastie's Adam "MCA" Yauch, The D unleashed their "earthquake of rock" on the Bay Area.

The Bynars, The Appreciation Post, The Main Drag, Plushgun @ T.T. the Bear’s Place, Cambridge MA

In the five years that I’ve lived in the Boston area I’ve not yet indulged myself in its rich local music scene. Not until the show at T.T. The Bear’s Place on Friday night in Cambridge. With four bands on the bill it was an exciting and gritty night of local music.plushgun2

When I first moved to Boston I thought little about its local music; there were no big names that I was familiar with and I was too lazy and too intimidated by the new scene to do the digging myself. Over the course of the last few months I’ve opened my ears to the local music scene, discovering radio programs that spotlight local music, meeting people who are experienced in its scene, and, well, by playing Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

Harmonix, the half video game developer half musician melting pot that created Guitar Hero (1&2) and Rock Band is located in my very own Cambridge, Massachusetts. Mere blocks, in fact, from the music venue T.T. The Bear’s. Harmonix is unique in the fact that is employs a large number of musicians from local bands and features songs from the bands in the video games. One of these bands, The Main Drag, I got to experience live on Friday night.

If there was one thing that was predominate in all the performers that night it was the energy; Boston band, The Bynars started it all off with a fury of sound and each subsequent band kept up the pace. Next up was The Main Drag. With five members of the band also working for Harmonix, they brought down the house with their performance of the Rock Band 2 featured song, “A Jagged Gorgeous Winter.” Their set also featured a spirited cover of LCD Sound System’s “All My Friends.” The Main Drag was one of the highlights for me and also won over my friends visiting from Los Angeles, we were particularly impressed with their adventurist guitarist who at one point attempted to play his guitar with a xylophone mallet. Insane.

The energy did not recede there, power pop magicians, The Appreciation Post, galvanized the stage next. They were the tightest performers of the night, with a high energy guitarist of their own really burning up the left side of the stage. The highlight of the set for me was definitely the excellent cover of Pinkerton-era Weezer, “Tired of Sex.”

Closing out the night was Brooklyn band, Plushgun. I really couldn’t imagine that the headliners would be able to push the energy level even further, but somehow they did. The lead singer’s vocals were compelling, channeling shades of , and we couldn’t help but notice his resemblance to mister Seth Rogan. Plushgun were handing out drum solos, foot stomps and high fives like candy and ended their set with a crowded stage full of dancing fans. It was a great way to end a supremely entertaining night of local and near local music.
