UK Music Charts – Oct 11 – Chipmunk & Barbra Streisand

Posted: 11 Oct 2009 12:08 PM PDT

The UK music charts may mean less now than they used to but they're still an indicator of what's hot on the popular British music scene right now. This week's Top 10 singles and Top 10 albums are listed below.

Chipmunk Oopsy Daisy Artwork

This week’s singles chart saw a tight race for number one between Chipmunk and The Saturdays. Chipmunk came out on top with Oopsy Daisy straight in at the top. Last week’s one and two, Jay-Z and Taio Cruz, dropped to three and four. Whitney Houston just missed out on the top ten, with Million Dollar Bill entering the charts at number 12.

Barbra Streisand managed to score her sixth number one album in the UK with Love Is The Answer, which rose from number four last week. Madonna sticks at number two with Celebration, while last week’s number one album, Brand New Eyes by Paramore, drops to three. The Resistance by Muse is already dropping (undeservedly), while Chris Rea’s and Andy Williams’ Best Of albums both enter the top ten.

Boyzone’s Stephen Gately Dead At 33 – Died On Holiday

Posted: 11 Oct 2009 09:07 AM PDT

Stephen Gately has died at the tender age of just 33 while on holiday in Majorca. He leaves behind his husband Andrew Cowles, who he married in a civil ceremony in London in 2006. Gately came out as gay in 1999, and was widely respected for doing so. Boyzone split a year later but reformed last year for a comeback tour.

Reports suggest Gately died in his sleep after a night out. His death is not being treated as suspicious but there are no more details being released about what could have caused his death at such a young age.

Boyzone manager Louis Walsh, now better known as a judge on The X Factor, lead the tributes by saying:

“We’re all absolutely devastated. I’m in complete shock. I was with him on Monday at an awards ceremony. We don’t know much about what’s happened yet… He was a great man.”

Gately’s family, friends, and the other members of Boyzone are all expected to fly to Majorca today to mourn the singer. Other celebrities, including Elton John, Fearne Cotton, Katherine Jenkins, Stephen Fry, and Paul Gambaccini have all issued tributes, with more likely to follow in the coming days.

Gately was one of the two lead vocalists in Boyzone alongside Ronan Keating. After Boyzone split in 2000, Gately released a solo album which topped the charts. He then headed into the theater, playing the lead in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and playing the evil child-catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
