| Shynes Attorney Talks Release Date, Says "Shyne Has Alot To Say" Posted: 17 Feb 2009 10:41 PM CST As the release date for Jamal "Shyne" Barrow approaches, his attorney Oscar Michelen has addressed the rapper's upcoming parole hearing date and says Shyne is looking forward to returning to the studio. The lawyer believes his client may be able to return home as early as this spring. "We're hoping for April," Michelen said in an interview. "[But] they don't normally let you know [the exact release date] until right before it happens...A parole hearing is scheduled for June. And if they don't release him prior to that date, then he gets his parole hearing. But they can advance that depending on the situation at the jail at that particular time. And we're under the belief that it might very well be advanced [to April]... I know he's anxious to get back into the recording industry. He's got a lot to say. And people are anxious to hear it." (Hip Hop DX) Shyne's time behind bars stemmed from a shoot-out at a New York City nightclub in 1999. The fracas broke out on December 27, 1999, at a Manhattan nightclub where Shyne, Sean "Diddy" Combs with then-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez and their entourage had been partying. Around 3 a.m., Combs and Shyne allegedly began arguing with another group of patrons. Someone threw money at Combs, a gesture of disrespect, and guns started going off. Three bystanders were shot. Shyne, who police found with a pistol in his waistband, was arrested after bystanders identified him as one of the shooters. Shyne received a 10-year prison. Barrow has always claimed he acted in self-defense and only fired his gun after the other group, Matthew "Scar" Allen and his crew began shooting. (About) Despite being imprisoned, the rapper released an album in August 2004. Jailed rapper Shyne, who signed a $3 million record deal and recorded part of his new album while in prison, had his phone privileges revoked and was barred from conducting in-person interviews as authorities investigate whether he may have violated prison rules in making about 100 phone calls. (USA Today) Shyne's rise to fame came from his association with Diddy's Bad Boy Entertainment. Shyne was well-known among the public before Bad Boy Records even released his debut -- which was, for many years, his only -- album. That album charted well, thanks in part to all the media attention he'd garnered over the years, and he showcased a remarkable talent for rapping despite his young-twenty-something age. The album wasn't an especially memorable work, however, and Shyne remained far better-known for his story than for his music. |

| Man Accused Of Tampering In C Murder Case Posted: 17 Feb 2009 10:29 PM CST The murder trial of C-Murder has taken another twist as New Orleans authorities have verified records of a man pleading guilty last year to obstruction of justice. According to nola.com, authorities are accusing Dwayne "Wango" Cobbins with witness tampering. The 35 year old New Orleans native is alleged to have tampered with trial evidence by "threatening to use force to influence one or more persons," resulting in "the hindrance, delay or prevention of the communication to a peace officer of information." C-Murder, real name Corey Miller, was convicted in September 2003 of murdering 16 year old Steve Thomas at a Harvey nightclub in 2002. On appeal, C-Murder was granted a new trial when his attorney Ron Rakosky revealed evidence confirming that prosecutors withheld the extensive criminal backgrounds of their three witnesses. At press time, the courts have sealed specific information detailing Cobbins' alleged tampering activity. However, records have confirmed that Cobbins has an extensive criminal background dating back to the early 90s. He was arrested in 2002, and sentenced to nine years in prison for attempted conspiracy to distribute cocaine between 1991 and 1997. Also, Cobbins pleaded guilty in 2006 to narcotics charges and was sentenced to 15 years. Previously, Cobbins was booked for attempted murder in 1993 and murder in 1995. Both charges were later dropped due to lack of evidence. At the time of his 2002 arrest, court records show Cobbins had in his possession a TRU records gold medallion from C-Murder's label. At press time, C-Murder could not be reached for comment. |

| Did The Democratic Party Exploit Hip Hop??? Posted: 17 Feb 2009 06:22 PM CST Did the Democratic Party Exploit Hip-Hop? Is Barack Obama is America's first hip-hop president? * From Playaz to Leaderz February 9, 2009 In a recent editorial, activist and former Green Party Vice Presidential Candidate Rosa Clemente challenged the declaration made by some Hip hip-hop artists and community organizations that Barack Obama is America's first Hip Hop President: "The hip-hop generation has never been a priority, we have always been an option and that option is used mostly to get out the vote during elections...those G.O.T.V. efforts become guaranteed votes for the Democratic Party and often fail to educate their followers about candidates that run outside of the two-party system.... I believe that like many before him, President-Elect Barack Obama's campaign used Hip Hop to create excitement amongst young people in this country, but we must clearly see through the $750 million bling-bling marketing haze of his campaign.." Clemente calls for a political movement that is multiracial and moves away from a white liberal-centric, two-party leadership. I don't think Clemente is wrong in questioning how exactly President Obama became known as the country's first hip-hop President. After all, Obama has expressed concern about the explicit lyrics and misogynistic content of some hip-hop music. The fact that he was mobilized by efforts such as Rock the Vote, Respect my Vote, even Will.I.Am's "Yes We Can" video, do not mean President Obama is hip-hop. His Presidency in no way should suggest that the struggle is over or that the hip-hop generation has "arrived." Hip-hop, as a culture, movement and lifestyle, is too complicated and too often analyzed along oversimplified binaries to be assessed in this way. But Clemente's editorial fails to complicate a few aspects of Obama's relationship to hip-hop. First, I doubt Obama is considered the "first hip-hop President" simply because he fist-bumped the First Lady and brushed dirt off his shoulders. Barack Obama is the first president to be from a hip-hop listening generation. He is the country's first President of color and, some argue, the first urban President. It's likely that his work as a community organizer, his residence in Chicago, his race, and his politics, have made him the historic candidate embraced by hip-hop artists around the nation. Whether or not Obama is the first hip-hop President remains to be seen. Creating a strong political movement that empowers youth and continues to raise questions is work that began even before the 2008 election and must continue long after Obama leaves office. I have to hope that now that he is in the White House, President Obama will not ignore the promises he has made to his young voters and that he will speak out against the injustices that continue for people of color, women, poor people, queer people in the United States. And I have to believe that organizers, progressives, and Hip Hop artists will continue to mobilize for justice and will hold President Obama accountable while he is in office.
